DethKarz is a futuristic 3D racing game by game publisher Melbourne House. It was released for Microsoft Windows in 1998. A Nintendo 64 port was planned but never released.
GameSpot said for the PC, "Dethkarz follows the futuristic racing formula exactly, without bringing any real personality of its own." GameSpot also rated the game 5.7 (mediocre).IGN said "Dethkarz is just like all the other arcade racers that have been released recently. It's a decent racing game, but it's not as good as Need for Speed 3, Test Drive 5, or Ultim@te Race Pro" rating the game 6.8 (okay).

When you have good art direction, your game will never look dated, no matter how old your graphics are. And this game has great art direction. Loved it as a kid.

Definitely. For a game that old, it has great visual clarity and readability needed for the gameplay. A lot of games that old, tracks and other elements were often dark and muddy and hard to navigate (P.O.D. and Powerslide come to mind).

Great game, and doesn't look that bad after all those years. DETHKARZ instead of Death Cars - you simply can't give it more edge.

Это на самом деле великая игра. Очень древняя, но прекрасно работающая на современных платформах, изначально поддерживает высокие разрешения. Не очень сильно устаревшая графика, и совсем не устаревающий геймплей. Физика машин великолепная, ощущение вождения многотонной махиной на высоких скоростях - просто сверх всяких похвал. Грамотные трассы - которые как просто можно научиться проходить, так и можно научиться проходить их на про-уровне, на каждой есть свои трюки и особенности. Не именитая, но очень приятная техно-музыка. И просто шикарный саунд-дизайн - звуки взрывающихся соперников просто пробирают до мурашек. Эту игру делали люди, которые видели будущее, наше настоящее, но были ограничены технически, хотя даже так вытянув из этого всё на максимум. Очень рекомендую всем любителям гонок - это шедевр на века.

Man! - fond memories of this - was an absolute GEM of a game! - we used to play it with a steering wheel and a projector (the huge drop on Mars was mindblowing on it!), have tournaments, and even my wife would join in and play it! - the car controlled so well, it was a dream to play, and the combat worked really well - sometimes only getting first by blasting the guy ahead, coming up to the finish line! (or getting blasted yourself!). Criminally overlooked and under-rated (by the mags) game - should have done a lot better, and it's aged really well - appreciate the HD video guys!

This race game is the best arcade futuristic ever made. No game are near this one . New or old. Its a master piece but many people dont know it that sad ... Gameplay was amazin the best by far Graphics probably the best Sound amazing ;aybe best also (with good speaker was awsome)

@@tomast9034 one day I decided to clean my voodoo 2 8mb card from dust. After the cleaning, unfortunately 4mb were gone forever. No wrist wrap or anything. Static electricity fried the vram (it was called texture ram back then). I was still young, I had no idea. Long live the voodoo wrappers, I say.

Great game! You know you can charge your shots for way more damage, i think 1 hit and a few normal shots can destroy the pointy speedy car.

How did you make it run stable? I have trouble running it on windows 10. The game randomly crashes what makes me replay entire cups. Bought it on gog btw.

tried on win 10 and works fine, you have to make some configurations previous to launch it.

@@abomala1607 yeah, frist you have to make a desktop acces, then edit the route and add /c at the end, it should look like this "X:\xxxxxx\Dethkarz\Dethkarz.exe /c , you have to launch it from the same acces and it will show you a config, winodw at the start, then have to select "direct 3d" and "primary screen driver" , select the resolution on the same screen and not from in-game options. you can edit the others options if you want, dont forget to set it to 60fps because it comes in 30 by default. hope it helps

wow graphics... Looks like a lot of fun, and actual true 3D racing... Does it have the option to race without weapons too? Number of tracks, cars? How much installed size on disk?

There are 4 different tracks which come in 3 different layout/lenghts each, so 12 tracks in total. I think there was an option to turn of weapons. Size shouldnt be too big considering it came out on 1 CD.

This game looks very similar to Thrust, Twist + Turn which came out a year after this, except it has weapons and a pit lane to repair damage. The background and scenery of the Metro City tracks share striking resemblances to the City tracks featured in the aforementioned later tracks, minus the billboards featuring women and girls, both realistic and anime-style which are not found in this game.

There were a lot of similar racing games around that time, it was a trending genre that sadly died off quickly. Powerslide and Rollcage were the same, SCARS was also simlar but more cartoony.

Either use the Steam version or the PC CD version, but the pirated copies often lack the necessary files such as the drivers, DX 3D, Direct X 3 - 6, and the 3D acceleration files that made it compatible with other GPUs that weren't Voodoo GPUs. I don't recommend CD key sites since they typically have unofficial keys so the only ones you're supporting are the resellers and not the devs themselves, and many devs would rather you pirate than pay someone else for their work.
