Dethonray replied to my inquiries about what causes the changes in Timbre modes & IEM vs Headphone modes. Here is what they say: "Direct/Reference mode is mainly due to the different designs of DAC filter and LPF. Your video description is very accurate. In different states, appropriate adjustments are made to the middle or high frequencies." "IEM/Headphone mode, Mainly considering the characteristics of different units, I have more than 20 units headphones and over 50 IEMs, which have significant differences because they have different sensitivity, impedance, and frequency response. Therefore, we must design complex volume and high/low gain system to enable the coexistence of a 10ohm/123db IEM and a 300ohm/102db headset. So the IEM/Headphone mode is a combination of the gain and volume of the feedback circuit in the LPF section." Dethonray adds that there are custom rubber feet available if the slipping issue bothers you. Furthermore they reiterate that the power supply is custom made and should perform on the level of 3rd party LPS in the 300-500 USD range. I compare the power adapter that come with the M1 with a USD250 LPS power supply （10A, 12V for my Synology NAS）, I must say that the sonic difference is VERY subtle. LPS may sound 5% better but I need tol test it again to see if it is a real benefit when I have more time.

I would like to see your opinon of the iBasso DC Elite. I've found it to be the only dongle which can compete with higher end, larger portable solutions.

The man behind dethonray is actually the original designer behind hifiman's legendary HM801. If I recall right the guy strongly dislikes the concept of balanced connection and mostly don't do balanced in his gears.

Your opinion should stay at 6 years ago. Our products Honey H1 and Pegasus SG1 already support 4.4. As an engineer, there is no reason not to like the technology of 4.4. We suggest that you have the opportunity to learn more about our products or have a chance to try them out instead of guessing here.

Hello Again WaveTheory and welcome to my comment. Thanks for the indepth review. I'm finding myself increasingly interested in portable or semi portable setups so I found this piece quite intersting. I'm not a fan of the looks of the knob on the front panel nor the huge oversized power plug. Sepcial design taken into consideration, I'd still prefer a brick format not unlike a laptop, but that's probably just a personal nit-pic. Another nit-pic would be I wish they would list the power output rated in watts for SE/BAL vs just the Vrms to save me math time to convert. I did the coversion and If I'm using one of my DAPs as a transport I'd probably be better off just using the DAPs I have as they have more power avaialble. Still a nice unit just being fussy here considering the price they are asking vs other mid to upper tier DAPs.

Hi, great review, as always. One question, what dacs do you recommend, in a lower price range, other than shiit or geshelli? (I am in europe, and they are hard to get and return in case of failures 😅). I thought about qutest, but better to wait for qutest 2 (maybe soon???) If it helps, I was thinking of pairing it with a HPA V222. Thanks!

Soekris is great and based in Denmark. Musician and Denafrips should have wide availability. SMSL makes the best dacs out of the "Chi-Fi" category, IMO.

Decent, less expensive than Weiss 502, Boulder 812, XIAudio Sagra, Chord Dave, DCS Lina, etc, enough power to drive HD800, Susvara, etc 😳
