My dad use to take me there when I was a kid all the time due to living a couple of minutes down the road. It was my favorite place to go. I remember going outside going up the spiral steps to the balcony to view the field and watch the planes. My favorite thing about that airport was those telephones. I took my daughter and showed her. Things in that era were so classy and made with pride. The only thing I dont like about renovation is the old time smell isn't there no more.

Yes, I can remember going out there as a kid and getting up on the observation deck and watching the planes take off and land. There was a lot of aviation activity there in the late 70s/early 80s. The airport isn't used as much now as it was then, and the observation deck is now used as an outdoor patio for the Walnut Room restaurant. I know the old smell you're talking about...probably a combination of mold, dust and tobacco residue. I'm sure they had to thoroughly soak everything with bleach and disinfectant after the hurricane cleanup, forever removing any remnant of the smell.

What a beautiful art deco building. I hope they can utilize it to keep it maintained.

Casper Yost they seem to be trying to preserve it now, after so many years of being encased in concrete panels during the Cold War era. They did a really good job of restoring it to its former conditions.
