I work in the natural gas industry, we do hot taps too. Biggest one I worked on was a 16" hot tap on a 24" pipeline. We weld the "full encirclement fitting" on and around the live line, this one was 1,100psi and flowing 700 million SCF a day, which is important because the pressure and flow are used by the engineers to calculate the heat loss properties and given to the welders to set the amperage range for the welding (too hot it could burn through, very bad. Too cold and the welds could crack, also very bad). I think it took about 20lbs of rods to weld the sides and hoops. Then the tapping company (TD Williamson in this case) comes in and does the actual cutting under a nitrogen charge that matches the line pressure. Their machine cuts and pulls the coupon, then a "pig bar" sleeve is inserted to keep a pig (pipeline inspection gauge) from catching on the cut. Really cool process. Nice trench by the way.

As a pipe fitter, I’ve done my share of “hot taps” and “wet taps”. This is a wet tap. On a hot tap, we weld the access fitting onto the main pipe to be tapped. On a wet tap, the process in the video is done and a clamp portal is used. Sounds trivial, like a problem with semantics but it is extremely important when fittings, welding machines and manpower has to be ordered before the excavator hits the job.
Great video. Brought back many memories of the many wet taps I used to do.The machine I used had a preset guage on it for drilling, thusly not having to watch the drill when it reversed itself. Also, we would either pour or place a thrust block behind tapping sleeve.

Great job, retired 7 years from Electrical. Years ago at the project I was working on couldn’t get the water turned off. They said the rod broke off the gate. So I had to watch a company add a new valve. Anyway they cut a piece of that 6 inch pipe so a new gate valve could be installed. That piece of trans pipe looked like it was new, but it was 40 or 50 years old.

This is why I have great respect for you guys in Utilities - it's not only hard work, but bleaching the pipe, etc. - you're thinking of your fellow man. Question though - even though they are pumping it (force main?), for an ENTIRE complex it's supposed to go thru that 2 inch pipe? I'm assuming a grinder pump setup or something, but for that many people still...
@somerandomguy8564Ай бұрын
I was thinking the exact same thing. Our private house has a 6-inch main drain pipe that goes to the connection in the street. Don't see how a 2-inch pipe could support the volume of water required to be moved for an apartment complex, even if they are using a grinder pump to break down solid waste.
@LydonThorpeАй бұрын
@@somerandomguy8564 I had this exact same thought. The size of the water pipe compared to the sewer pipe is very different. One thought I had is that maybe with a sump in the apartment building a smaller pipe is fine. The sump collects the water when someone flushes and then it slowly drains out via the smaller pipe that's constantly flowing. So instead of a large pipe with intemittent flow you use a small pipe that has a constant flow. My other thought is maybe the water supply pipe is over spec'd compared to the waste piping as its used for fire suppression as well. In the event of a fire they need the large pipe's capacity for the sprinklers, but in normal everyday use the water requirements of the building only require a 2 inch pipe.

When you use a lift station and force main the line can be smaller then a gravity flow pipe with solids. The pit would have been sized to hold certain ammount then be pumped out multiple times a day. Dont have to worry about soilds becaue the pump will grind it up. Example would bd a station have two 8" gravity lines coming in and use one 4" force main be pumped 1000' feet away and up about 40' to a lagoon. i just watched your video, i have a question on the water main brake. here in NY, our electrical power in houses has to be grounded to the water main, in your state, is the water main used as a ground. if it is, when you cut out the piece of main pipe than reconnected it back the way it was done many houses now have no grounds. i am curious being a retired electrician. thanks

@@cuznjo1 most new water maims here are c900 , I honestly couldn’t tell ya lol
@gorak9000Ай бұрын
the ground is the copper pipe between the house and the main line - it's making continual contact with the ground along the whole run of the pipe. Basically about the same or slightly better than pounding a solid copper ground rod in. If you have plastic pipe, that's obviously not going to work as a ground. Cutting out a section of main pipe isn't going to affect the ground as there's still plenty of contact to the ground

@@gorak9000 last night i was thinking that running pipe under ground, would act like a ground rod would. but i didn't take the post down, just trying to see what others thought, THANKS

What's up with that sewer line that looks like it was only 2"-3"?
@rodpreston100Ай бұрын
@@MrBgyfz450 they gotta pump it from a septic to our sewer main, wasn’t my call lol contractors engineers wanted it to be 2 inch

I was thinking the same thing.

Yeah, me three. Was scratching my head wondering what the deal was. Only way I could figure that works is if they have a septic, or maybe some kind of mini-processing plant or something in the building's mechanicals. I appreciate the explanation, I would have had that shit stuck in the back of my head for a month bugging me, trying to figure out how the literal shit didn't get stuck, lol.

Nice video. So that rather small looking white PVC was the sewer for the entire apartment complex?
@rodpreston100Ай бұрын
@@Jerry_SWMO no , the apartment sewer is on a well , the 2 inch is where it will pump out of
@Mr_P_HowellsАй бұрын
does the pilot bit hold onto the plug for the hole saw to pull it out after it's cut? I say bullshit that whole apartment building waste is being pumped thru what looked like a 2" PVC. Your supplying it with 8" of water and removing it with a 2" straw, I understand they are not consuming water all the time but they must have a huge tank to store it and pumping constantly to slowly to bring it down.
@rodpreston100Ай бұрын
@@Mr_P_Howells yup they have a pump station that will pump it away, the contractors engineer made use use the 2 inch 🍻👍🏼

@@rodpreston100 Ok I see an engineer that explains it. I spent a lot of time redoing what the engineers and architects had put on the blue prints. I worked for NYS and it was always a fight to get changes made to the bid blueprints. They would ask us to look them over but when we found problems it was already out to bid and they couldn't do anything so would pay parts and labor to change it later. NYS loves to waste money.

@ I personally would have used at least 3 inch , but I don’t got a white hard hat 😜👍🏼🍻

I'm just a regular joe, but when I saw that little itty bitty white PVC being used as the waste pipe, I was like, nooo waay. My load couldn't even fit through that, much less a whole apartment. 😅😅
