Detroit Diesel 16v71 that was originally in a yarder, converted to a dragline for mining. It was abandoned years ago and we decided to try to save her.

During routine maintenance at a mine I worked at, they would get 4 of these engines running air compressors while the main electric units were down . It was a absolute delight to be around all that noise at once.

Great job chaps! Nice to see you recovering these treasures. That has a fantastic sound and I expect that boy will be well on the way to being a engine nut one day. It’s sad to think how much of this built-for-a- lifetime gear has gone to scrap. Got the makings of a decent off-grid power setup right there.

If I could, I would rebuild the V16 back to it's former glory. Those are icon engines. They helped American troops and Canadian troops in ww2,they helped build roads, work in mining industry, and are not easy to find. In my 34years of class1 truck driving i have only seen 1 V12 in a cabover Pete. I started off in a 1983 GMC Astro cabover with an 8V92 Silver Detroit 400 with a 13speed,this is why I am now half deaf,lol. God Bless You All 🙏 ❤.

Cool to see! I just watched a video on YT of a 12v71 powered Brockway Cabover that was used to build the World Trade Center back in the day. That thing is a beast! I used to drive a 1978 White Road boss with a 6v71. If those engines ain't leaking, stop and check the oil because you are very low or it has none. All those old two strokes leaked.

International Harvester built trucks for the loggers, that used those 16V71 engines, you might try Skadill, on KZbin, he has tracked down a huge amount of weird machinery and trucks, over the last few years. It would be awesome if someone could do a truck build with one of your blocks. Hayes built some, so did Pacific. In Pacific's case they're strictly for off road use. Best wishes, from the far North.

Got to be very conservative with the ether on those old Detroits. Seen many broken rings from overzealous doses of the ether....results in a dead hole. Would have been a lot better to get her primed up first.
@victorpelini5995

I'm not very knowledgeable abt ether and Diesel (my gas engines never give me trouble sooo) what's with ether and rings ? Cuz it's a solvant?
@MrAmartin8
@MrAmartin8 2 жыл бұрын
@@victorpelini5995 The ether actually raises the compression ratio higher . Think about it when you use it in a gas engine . You actually get a knock when the gas engine starts ... The V series engines have two piece pistons . They can break and that cylinder will start sucking oil from the pan . Usually a holed piston or broken cross head will cause the problem . Pull all the air box covers and do a ring and piston inspection . You will probably find your problem . Blower seals will usually not cause raw oil to come out the exhaust as the engine will burn what may be leaking from the blowers .. Good luck ..
@victorpelini5995
@victorpelini5995 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrAmartin8 ohh okay makes sense now
@ebbsspeed
@ebbsspeed 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrAmartin8 The ether does not raise the compression. The ether has a lower auto-ignition temperature than diesel fuel does, and that's why it is used as a starting fluid when injectors are dry or the weather is cold. It damages things because when it does ignite it burns explosively and creates very high combustion pressures, vs the slower burn of diesel fuel.
