I used to live in Windsor and work in Detroit. I spent some time exploring the abandoned areas of the city. Detroit was once so prosperous and it's very sad to see these beautiful buildings vandalized, stripped and destroyed. It always baffled me that the city did not reach out to recycling and repurposing companies. The banisters, moldings, woodwork and stonework in these buildings are historic and gorgeous. I'm sure many companies and individuals (myself included) would pay for an opportunity to repurpose and refinish these pieces and install them in homes where they would continue to be appreciated. Instead, they are destroyed by vandals, stolen by thieves, or left to rot. Let's be honest. The city had no intention to save that school or repurpose those lockers, etc, but they could have had a public auction. At least then the city might have profited. At the very least, some history might have been saved.

The peach and the plum trees did well also .And that was in yards with no home occupants . Danto Furniture is making Detroit better one building at a time. Giving of their own resources to contain the blight and prevent crime is the first step to improving a problem in Detroit. In many areas of Michigan such as Detroit, Flint, Jackson, Adrian, and other cities you can find abandoned homes and buildings. Whether the building sits abandoned or boarded up, it clearly sends a message to corporations to look elsewhere to relocate their business. Millions can be spent improving a city, but with abandoned buildings and homes the message is clear.

Options such as creating a code enforcement program in the city must be used (see code enforcement program on Fort Wayne Indiana website). Also the federal government has fund to rid blight (Detroit is receiving these funds). Tearing down old ruined properties is only a quick fix. The blight is not on the properties, it is the people blighted thru abandonment, neglect, discrimination. Establish training sites in this area to put those without college (even high school dropouts) to learn thru "Hands on Training". This area is a goldmine of opportunity to enlist/employ people that can be trained in the construction industry to: nail, hammer, saw, demolish, plant, bulldoze, operate cranes. If a building is worthy of rebuilding, train a man to shingle, plumb, cement, install, plaster, resurface, landscape these properties. It is a re-purpose of something blighted. Take this neglect and turn it into a place of training. It is what the federal government did during the depression by hiring people to build the national parks, dams, military installations and interstate highways.

anthony rubio That’s completely false stop watching CNN. He’s brought back jobs for those people. He even gave billions to black business owners for a little head start. Keep voting democrats if you want more neighborhoods to turn out like this.

In the first story, I know it's a poor area, but the parents really couldn't raise 100-200 for the lumber and nails to board up the houses next to the school where the children were in danger from? Couldn't do a car wash fundraiser. I see it all the time for the football teams. I know it is the cities job, but this is a problem in many of these communities. It is always someone else's problem. A child could have been raped and murdered if the news hadn't come and I guarantee it would still be open if the news didn't come. Come on parents you see a need make a way. I think your pockets are your priority not your children.

@AuroraBoarder16 жыл бұрын
Boarding up a house isn't going to do anything, since the boards can easily be removed. Some citizens burn down the shells of houses to get rid of them. This is more effective, as well as cheaper.

People in Detroit don't own cars! And people driving through the city don't want to stop their cars so that dozens of black people who need money can surround their vehicle! In fact, that's WHY those people DON'T live in Detroit in the first place!

The problem is you buy one of these houses for cheap. Than city by laws come around and do inspections, issue fines and notice to repair which can cost 20k to 40k. Not worth the stress.

The city should give the owners of these abandoned houses 1 year to fix the houses or confiscate & auction them off on the town steps
@VinnyGjokaj2 жыл бұрын
They give these homes away for $1 and they will give you $5000 at one point… the homes have been foreclosed and they’re begging people to buy them in hopes of income from taxes.. they’re doing as much as they can to attempt to bring people in but nobody wants to invest in a single home because scrappers, squatters, and lowlifes destroy it right away… maybe if the entire neighborhood was bought and redone there would be a chance to get it done nicely but that’s a far shot

I remember me and my friend were walking to the store, and this is macon ga, so we where walking past a blighted house and two men came out and ran at us. Later on I found out someone I know ran away with the two men and robbed a store and I never saw her in town again.
