Detroit Airport Connection Flight DTW Tour

This is a connection flight at the Detroit Airport from Buffalo, New York to Cincinnati, Ohio. The Detroit airport is interesting because it is very long in length and they actually have a tram that will take you from one end to the other. I work there at DTW for Delta. There are only 2 terminals for Delta in DTW. The A concourse handles all of the mainline Delta flights, the A concourse is 1 mile long from end to end. Comprised of gates A2-A78. The B/C concourse handles all but a couple Delta Connection flights and is about half the length and is comprised of B1-B21 and C1-C30. That long concourse design has been an extreme success in previous airports especially for Delta. Atlanta is a great example, Each concourse is a mile long, and they have 6 of them there with another small half sized one, but having that design reduces the amount of traffic jams with aircraft arriving and departing through the same alleyway. It also allows for more retail space with restaurants and shops.

4:41 Perhaps the concourse is long and linear in order to avoid planes at the gates being bunched up too close at the intersection of the cross. Greater "surface area relative to volume" sounds better, with the linear building. Other airport configurations I have seen have concourses jutting out from a main area and I guess that works also. But I think it's a nice clean airport. Having had only non stop flights since I moved to SE Michigan, I have never had a connecting flight when I had to rush to get to the next one, so the long length never sabotaged my plans!

I remember when it opened. It was a Northwest hub. Still a beautiful airport.

I remember 17 years back this terminal was all NWA Northwest airlines back in 2005 the first I was here in Detroit airport. when delta was not here yet.

We are travelling from Heathrow UK Jan 2025 connection in Detroit (1.50mins) layover onward to Los Angeles. How does it work do we collect our baggage from the carousel & go through customs again or do we inform Delta cabin crew we have a connection. Any help .... Thanks

Very doable. It's very easy to connect in the A concourse. Additionally, on long-haul routes operated by wide-body aircraft (e.g., A330, A350), the boarding takes a while.
