Those old Detroits are amazing, you can leave them dormant for years and with very little work they will fire up again. I bought a old Ford backhoe that had not been run in 10yrs, fresh fuel and a battery and she knocked to life, long story short I returned from West Virginia without my diesel 1ton ford truck or the backhoe🤬😤😖😂

I've found 3-53s, 3-,4-, and 6-71s in old wooden fishing boats in Neah Bay. Once in a blue moon, one will show up at the dump with a blower full of oil. I grab those blowers, clean em up, and sell em!

Most 2 cylinder detroits ive seen were generators or rail car refrigerator cars, never seen a crane with one. Even log cranes ive seen had 4 cylinders

I'd love to have a truck with an old Jimmy in it. Any truck. And any Jimmy, whether it's 3 or 4-53, 2,3,4, or 6-71, 12V-71, or 8V-92! They all bellow like Hell's hounds! (And they were GMCs or "Jimmies" long before they were "Detroits".)

I'd like to see a 2-71 in a GMC General.

It's HARD to kill a 2-cycle. I've run the 2's in screens and Unit cranes and such and they don't die easy. Just keep the water out of 'em. They'll go!

Well, at least you got the pony running! (Sorry, couldn't help it!)

Here's a great vid on a 1948 2-71 rebuild by Continental Engine out of Regina, Sask. Came to them in boxes with a spun rod bearing and completely worn out crank shaft. Sweet sounding rebuild. youtube 4gNRx0z9FBU

'Looks like a nice little crane.....do you own it??It seems liek it would make a terrific collectible and a great restoration project!!I myself know a Allis Chalmers crawler loader that is powered by the exact same engine 1 hour drive from where i live.....If mechenic was my cup of tea, i would have done whatever i can to buy that A-C loader and restore it.....that was a nice little machine as well but pretty beaten-up.Nice viedo, thanks a lot for it.

Is that a generator where nowadays we see alternators?
@lewiemcneely91436 жыл бұрын
Probably. The older ones had them. And that's an older one!
@tractorboy316 жыл бұрын
Yep generators produce power but in smaller outputs my 1957 JD has one i added 1 7in led light bar and now i go slight discharge they are good for around 20 amps or so
@lewiemcneely91436 жыл бұрын
All of them I was around would keep the battery up but that was about it. I like an alternator a LOT better. Don't have to keep them humming to get some current out of them.
@willysteck776 жыл бұрын
How much work did you have to do to get it to run?
@skadill6 жыл бұрын
None at all,just jumper cables
@grabasandwich6 жыл бұрын
Kinda risky that it would run away without checking for stuck injectors or rack eh?
@davida.p.99116 жыл бұрын
Would have been awesome to see it running. Cranking was amazing though

I've got one in a HD-5 tracto-shovel, if you have ever heard one you won't forget what a 2cylinder Detroit sounds like, any 2 stroke Detroit for that matter
