We used to do that with multi fuel Duce and a half in the army. Put the truck on a hill, put the trans in 5 th high range. Let roll down the hill backwards and dump the clutch. Smoke billowed out the air cleaner, can imagine what the engine was ingesting pulling air through the exhaust pipe. We thought it was hilarious to have a 5 speed reverse.

Accidental backwards starting used to be a real headache with the old cartridge-start Field Marshall tractor engines. Really important to make sure the engine was in the right position before firing. My first girlfriend's Dad had a pair of Marshalls, one of which was still used occasionally as late as the 1990s when the farm was busy. Real pain if you started the thing backwards when you were at the far side of the farm and had no more cartridges (at the end of a long day when you were already dead tired!)

Our 720 John deer two cylinder diesel would occasionally start backwards if it wasn't spinning fast enough when the decompression lever was released. The oil bath air cleaner would splash out onto the cowling top, making a huge mess. If it ran long enough it would melt out inside of the oil bath. Love your videos> It reminds me of working on rusty old farm machinery with hand tools.

yup. At least you had a fuel shut off. I once had a backspin in a 1966 GMC "crackerbox" with a 318. Neat thing was it had a huge oil bath air filter so not only did it smoke like a Tennessee still in January, it spilled a ton of oil everywhere before I could pick a gear and stall it out. (Key location was a little weird)

I did that once with a Maxidyne which of course is a four stroke. It was a dump truck which I was backing into a soft spot--it almost stalled and then started running again. Smoke started coming out the breather and when I let out the clutch in reverse it started moving forward. I was young and had no idea what was going on--I thought I'd done some serious damage. But, I shut it down (manual fuel shutoff like your dozer), restarted it and it was like nothing had ever happened. I said nothing to my boss. Many years later I did the same thing with a Cat 3208. I didn't think you could do this with a four stroke, but there you have it.

Funny, I did the exact same thing with a 3208 myself. Almost stalled it pulling up to a quarry scale and when I pushed the clutch in, it started blowing dirt out of the air intake (LN7000 Ford) and had a weird sound to it. Shut the key off and started it back up. Never knew a four stroke was able to run in reverse🤔. Sure backflushed the air filter!

Same thing happened to me around 1984. The 1970 American LaFrance with a 6-71 Detroit Diesel started and ran backward as I was behind the wheel about to respond to an emergency. I put it in 1st gear and let out the clutch before I knew it was running backward, and the truck began backing up inside the bay. I slammed on the brakes and it stopped - choking off the engine. After a few terse words from the Captain, I assured him it was in 1st gear. I pressed the starter button again and this time it ran correctly and we were finally enroute. I had heard this truck could run backward, but it blew my mind when it happened to me.

Correct me if I am wrong but those 2 stroke Detroits were designed to run either way, the reason being is when they are side by side in a boat it makes the screw for the propellers in a boat.They were basically Marine engines.
@1958johndeere620
@1958johndeere620 Ай бұрын
They have to be designed that way, oil pump, injection timing ect. Most smaller boats now have the reverse direction in the transmission so both engines are standard rotation. Big boat engines actually stop forward rotation, kick timing over and re start backwards rotation to reverse the boat.

Lol 😆 yup i was running backwards! Just so you know, ANY diesel can run backwards, even a 4 stroke which will also exhaust out the air intake and intake via the exhaust. The smoke was actually because the rain flapper was being sucked shut because it became intake and was choking off air for combustion! I LOVE ‘y 1940 Gray Marine badged on the rocker cover, 2-71! She runs like a fine watch and is good on fuel and sounds like yours! Awesome stuff!! Merry Christmas from Rick Delair! 😊

We would get one of those 2-week wonders, who had a 2-week CDL training before they bought their CDL. They would be driving Detroit 2-stroke powered semi trucks and when they finally backed into the loading docks (between the yellow lines) they would hit the big rubber bumpers. Those would stop the semi and occasionally one of those Detroits would start running backward. Panic would set in and smoke coming out of the engine hood, the engine sound would be much different, and the oil pressure light would come on. The dock foreman would call the shop which was next to the dockyard and say another Jimmy is running backward at the dock. I would hustle over there, find the emergency stop shutter control, and shut it down. The 2-week wonder school never taught about the emergency shutdown procedures. They tended to be back off the clutch when the engine reversed and in their excitement, they would release the clutch a little bit and the truck would start to drive away from the dock even though it was in reverse. Most ship engines are 2-strokes that are designed to be reversed as they are directly hooked to the prop shaft. That is one of the reasons that the ship hit the bridge in Baltimore. The pilot could not reverse the engines quickly because the propellor shaft had to spin to a stop before the engine could be reversed. In their case when the generator system failed, the electric oil and coolant pumps stopped and that shut the engine down. No thrust and the rudder did not have much authority and could not turn the ship.

Modern fuel injected 2 stroke snowmachines (snowmobile, skidoo, snowgo… whatever) have reverse, it’s a button and when you press it, the computer cuts the engine until it slows to do a reverse rotation due to compression, then it brings fuel and spark online and you’re running backwards.

A 2-71 2 cylinder. Doesn’t sound much like the more cylinder models. First time I have seen a video of one running backwards. I did not realize they spit the exhaust back out the intake when they did. I guess that’s because the blower is also running backwards sucking the air out of the intake ports instead of pushing it into them? I was alway under the impression they could run fine in either direction. It was just a matter of the direction the starter turned the engine.

9:33 This misbehaviour of two-stroke diesels lead to severe and fatal accidents with e.g. the Lanz Bulldogs. These are single-cylinder crud-oil diesels with >350 cui (up to 10.3 liters) displacement. Under heavy load as with towing waggons up a hill the engine could stall - and refire backwards, which is usually the start of a disaster given weight and inefficient brake systems. The early models had to be stopped and run in reverse anyway, since the gearboxes had no reverse gears. Trained mechanics could achieve this with stopping the fuel supply, starve the engine and - while observing the flywheel - open the fuel valve again. The engine then coughes, blows a cloud of smoke and runs in reverse. The design of the engine however is different from the Detroits. It only has side ports and no exhaust valves and sucks the fresh air through the crankcase - like a petrol two-stroke.

Reason why I ask is, I want to watch that same video of yours to find out what the result was regarding that goo. Since my father in law has the same problem with his 1967 John Deere JD500 backhoe. It stopped running. I changed the fuel filters on it, and discovered this goo coming out of the filter housing. Also found it in the bottom of the fuel tank. Assuming now, it is throughout the entire fuel system. Cranks but will not start. No smoke from the stack. Only a few months ago it ran fine. I’m stumped. My father in law is 91 years old. So I have been helping him with a lot of things around his property. He is battling lung cancer, and the chemo and radiation kicked his butt. Thank you in advance for any advice that you have. And please let me know which video to watch. Thank you.

We had a 108 Link Belt with a 2-valve 4-71 that would run the engine backwards if you killed it while trying to boom it up at an idle with a load on it. No big deal. Lock both drum brakes and pull them into hoist.

Difficult to understand how the engine could continuously run backwards, since the blower would suck air out of the cylinders instead of forcing it in. The proof would be if he let the main clutch out and the dozer ran backwards - but he didn't. Interesting that the smoke coming out the air cleaner took some time to begin and built up slowly. If the engine was running backwards, one would expect the any smoke to begin immediately and be in quantity proportional to RPM.

The blower sucks air into the cylinders through the open exhaust valves. It was running backwards. Watch the oil pressure gauge at 0 when it was running backwards.
@keithammleter3824

@@BusGreaseMonkey Ah, yes - the open exhaust valves. Effective compression would be low, since the air in the cylinders would begin at less than atmospheric pressure instead of above atmospheric - that explains the smoke. I cannot make out the oil pressure gauge though.

Any 2cycle diesel can run backwards if air is not cut off they will destroy themselves. Turbo 4 cycle can get oil from a bad turbo and run away in a forward motion

Reminds me of the early days of golf cart engines, to go backwards you reversed engine rotation. But would I be wrong in thinking an engine not designed to run backwards would have its oil pump pulling oil FROM the bearings?????

4 strokes can run backwards if you let the engine stall while pushing stacks and dont hit the clutch fast enuf. Gotta kill fuel when that happens bcos Oil pump is in reverse.

Will have almost no power since injection timing would be really retarded (it's normally advanced, which is why they can run backwards if the engine slows down enough to have the ignition happen before the piston gets to the top.)
