Phil is my kind of guy, I see myself being just like him. I especially liked the part where he squirted the ether and held it to the floor on the last video. I know he knows better( I was saying, those poor rod bearings), but at the same time, I get where he is coming from. Low batteries- who has all that extra time and energy getting jumper cables, another vehicle, etc. Lets squirt it and give it hell, especially when I get up to Phil’s age. I also commend him for staying busy, and still doing work that he enjoys.

Someone mentioned the 4-51. I owned a 57 GMC 250 with that engine. It used a 3 speed auxiliary transmission behind a 4 speed manual. I believe it was a one of a kind custom install done by General Motors. No load was 2800 rpm and with the straight lobed blower it was quite a screamer. Would roll out a nice trail or smoke since it wasn’t that clean without any valves to clear the exhaust. The truck ended up in a junk yard in Santa Rosa CA where the remains were sold to a person in Ontario. It is currently for sale and potential restoration.

I joke around about the 2 Strokes being junk, and they have all but vanished from equipment, but they were engines that could take a beating. 6-71, 4-71, 4-53 nearly indestructible. They can run on anything, made decent power, leaked, but were reliable. 60 years from now where will all the common rail, Dpfd, controlled engines be?? Melted down into a cheap imported product. Heck they don’t last 10 years, i think it’s why I like this channel, people saving quality American iron. Also that Detroit can sit another 20 years and still make power.

Never say never! You never know what comes from around life's corner. I was in the us army's M1 Abrams tank program due to my gas turbine experience in the us navy. I was running AGT-1500 turbine engine test cells testing and setting them up to go in M1 tanks. One day the Army asked me to run Detroit 6V53T engine's on a test cell setup for those. The next thing I know I spent 3 years doing just that. I would put them on the engine stand and load cell, set the racks, start them up and break them in. After break in Horse Power and torque was checked and governor set. Then I would pickle them for storage or shipping.

Funny thing was as soon as I hit enter on that message I had the fleeting thought. "Oh my, what have I gotten myself into.. Of course I'm now going to work on one of these engines some day" I'm an electronics guy, 10 years ago I never would have any reason to mess with a diesel engine. In that time I've now swapped out the injection pump on a 7.3 IDI 3 times, and gotten pretty good at it too.

JOEB JOEB those 2-71 gen sets were made for railroad refrigerated cars. There’s lots of them. Believe it or not, they actually made a 1-71. I think it was used by GM for testing. Pretty rare, but some still exist.

@Bill - perfect! When I was watching Scott turn his liner-puller 1/8th turn at a time, last video... I thought _ he needs a ratcheting box-end wrench, on that thing,_ Bravo! @Scott - With the rack off, why wouldn't you be able to turn it over with the starter motor (bump it every 5 - 10 seconds), when you can't get an actual 'bar' on it (instead of, one tooth at a time)? @Phil - It doesn't matter if you're shooting blanks or not; as long as you've got good aim! Cheers-

I didn’t want to find out if the starter didn’t work until we were ready to start. It’s such a bigger let down later. ;) i certainly didn’t want to do that. And of course well in typical General motors quirkiness, I've noticed that a lot of the starters used sound very unique. I always wonder, what were the engineers like who designed this engine, what did they speak like etc. There's a video on KZbin with an overview of the series 71 engine oil lubrication system. That's what it's called, apparently done by the US navy. But it's fascinating!

Brake cleaner removes the oils, not the rust.. You want to keep the oil, not the rust. And you don't want brake cleaner in your motor oil. And the injectors just need to get some oil inside.
