My wife and I might be picking up a Hatteras 58 with the 8V71 engines, at the end of summer 2023 and this is an excellent introduction for me. Well photographed and well explain so that a beginner like myself has a good grasp on what is needed to be done and what to look for. It doesn't make me a Detroit engine mechanic but it does give me the confidence to know what I am looking at if a seasoned mechanic does need to investigate. Thanks for a perfect tutorial; I will be looking for everything you have on this engine.

I would always clean the top of both valves with a clean rag with either, then mark each valve top with a sharpie or magic marker, put the bridge on and pushing down in the center wiggle the bridge side to side, if it's good both valves will show it, if not adjusting is necessary !!! Of course the new style had floating bridges like newer Cummins etc, the fuel racks are the most important adjustment, I'm shure you'll agree.

Very excellent video - as well as many of your others! A question - how do you adjust the fuel modulator cam and lever assembly that clamps to the rack for the jake brakes? I looked at the Jakes manual and it talks about using a gage but there is no mention of a part number. What was your method?

I have a 12v71 we did new injectors and run the rack as you said, but it's black smoke under load, we remove the air cleaners , when we test run, any areas you would suggest we look at thanks much

Black smoke under load is primarily caused by too much fuel, or not enough air. The new injectors may not be suited to your application. Your air filters, or routing of the intake system may also be a contributing factor. Finally work valve guides, rings or liners may also cause this, but it will be accompanied by excessive oil consumption.

Awesome video Lacroix, I have overhauled LOTS of inline and V, 53 and 71 series however they were all for RR track equipment and never had Jake's on them, i see you adjusting the jake's. i am setting an engine up for a friend and not sure what the position of the injectors/valves to make the settings on the jake.

I want to install a Jake brake on my 1988 mack Dm it has a 237 Maxitorque motor that was rebuild by certified mack mechanic friend of mine 12 Years ago and I parked it after a month of running the truck.. Economy reasons. I always wanted to install a jake on this mack .Is this kind of easy to do. Im watching you on this video and it doesnt seem that back.. jakes on that era of Mack engine are not terribly effective...........about 1/3 as good as a cummins jake. Try flapping your arms out the window or an exhaust brake.

No, if you have fuel in your oil possibly one of the pipes that brings fuel to the injectors is leaking.

I had a leak of fuel into my oil. I checked the torque and the sound of the crossover tubes. They all sounded good except one of them. got movement on probably 5 or more of the nuts ... but some were found to be over torqued. I have eteched (scratched) the oil level on the dipstick so i can see if i start "making crankcase oil again. Should i consider just replacing the crossover tubes?

hudsonhawk 001 marking the upper level on the dipstick gives you a quick reference to see if the engine is « making oil ». If the level goes up you know you have a fuel or coolant leak filling the crankcase and dangerously diluting your oil.

@@LacroixCruiser you set the height on the injector when it's in the motor ,,it is a little T SHAPED steel Gage and it goes in a tiny hole next to the injector,,,it's kind of like a go ,no go gage,,,it flags how high up the injector goes so it stays full of fuel there are brown ,white ,red ,yellow and I believe green ,,,,I used them when I would run the rack as they called it , back then that was what we used to,,,set the injectors and then set the valves after it really makes those 71 series and 92 series have a very crisp bark to them when tap that throttle then you run half desiel and half kerosene in it it's like high test in a car ,,,cat ,and Cummins, can only run a quarter of a tank because there fuel pumps need the oil or they will seize up .

Around the 8 minute mark you see me using the injector height tool. Unlike yours, mine are not colour coded, but instead have the measurements listed on them that correspond with the specifications given in the service manual.

Thank you I have been asking if anyone knows how to flag the injectors on the 71 series or 92 series and no one ,,,,no one answers me ,,,brown ,,,,white yellow ,,,,and red ,,,I have all 8 of the flags that you set while the motor is running but no answers all so if you change the tips of the injectors from the original 6 spray holes to the 8 spray holes then run 1/2 diesel to 1/2 kerosene that thing will run like a scalded dog ,,,,a 238 6cly 318 350 430 ,,,,,males a big difference in the power curve on those old Detroit
