Sorry I'm late to the party, just subscribed. You'd be surprised at how stubborn hoarders are. Have you ever watched the show Hoarders? I've seen those people go to jail rather than part with their hoard. Alienate family, friends, you name it. They're not only good at hiding it but they will fight to the death for their crap. Calling adult protective services usually only results in them getting fines or at best, thrown out of the house and it's demolished, leaving them homeless. Before you come back with, "just force them to go to a hotel and clean it up!", that doesn't work. I can't imagine living like this either but you can't force help on someone who doesn't think they need it.

I had the same scenario in my life ,only I called daily to my relative morning and at night , plus she did horad somewhat not like this lady ,had a cat . A neighbor called me and told me she had not seen her a couple of days , went over called out for her nothing I even thought her telephone was cut off , This happened in August in Florida , had all her windows close , plus her airconditoner just broke down , So I called the police and they entered first not me , they broke into the house , did not allowed me to inter until they finish , she passed away drinking coffee Heart attack , I notified her brother , who lived somewhere else in Florida , I was the only one who bought a property close to her ,, at times beg her to let me inside her home with some excuse , It was to me not bad , but later I discovered yes it was and yes it went on for many years but hidden inside of her closets . She was already in the process of discomposing because of the heat , I will never forget the smell of it for the rest of my life. So how did she get inside and not smell the scent of death?

People called her on holidays & such but didn’t worry because they had each other. When nobody answered at the house, they began calling hospitals and morgues and finally located Sally’s sister, Lorraine, in a Detroit hospital. She had suffered a stroke and was unable to talk or give any info on Sally. Sallyhad been unheard from since November 10th, so sally could have only been dead for about a week. Also, the dog was found dead in the next room, this was in November in Detroit; no heat. The dog died from a mixture of starvation & freezing conditions. He ate bits of her but it wasn’t enough to sustain him.

We had a neighbor who was a hoarder - she would never let us in past the hallway, and even kept her 2 adult children from going into the house. Her husband lived with her, but was unable to change her behavior, and just gave up trying. When she had a heart attack, the day after her mother died, the paramedics could not get their equipment inside, and had to carry her outside to do CPR. By the time they got her heart restarted, she had massive brain damage from lack of oxygen, and was put on life support. 4 days later, her husband had it removed. It took her kids and her sister a month to clean out the house, a 2 story place, including an attic and basement full of "stuff".

You need to know how to talk to them. Takes a person with the patience of a saint. Because there is an emotional connection to each item and a reason they saved it. You need to be like a therapist for them, gain their trust, help them to figure out if each item is something to throw away, give away, recycle, or keep. THEY NEED to be the ONE making the decision on each item. No you don't get to tell them what to get rid of because you will say everything. You will traumatize them even more. Group similar items together. Maybe on first day just wash dishes. Do one small area at a time and start with kitchen sink. If there is garbage or recycling to take out, take it out. Even that small bit will be a difference. Let them sleep on it. They'll feel better their sink is clean. Each thing they get rid of or let go , makes it easier to let the next thing go. Some things they won't be able to let go of even though they serve no purpose. Maybe another time. You can't rush it. Once the sink is clean, maybe clean the bathroom so they can use it. Do some laundry there is probably a lot of that around. Maybe take a bunch of it to a laundromat for a change of scenery and to do a lot at once. Maybe once there you can even throw some away if it isn't something they still want to keep or wear.

Mom can still get up & take care of her needs, still has full mental capabilities but is in the first stage of dementia. She loves to play her games & music on her computer. I make her breakfast, lunch & snacks or whatever she wants. We talk about her growing up with her sisters & brothers, her mom & dad, how she met dad & how they "courted" & how mom & dad along with us 5 kids were born & raised in the country. I wouldn’t criticize family to much. When it gets this bad the hoarder won’t leave or change or allow anyone to clean the house or rescue them. It creates a terrible family conflict. You would have to contact authorities and legally have them removed and taken to assisted living or a rest home. This woman would not foster positive communication with her aunt due to her demanding abrasive demeanor. Sorry she was put out. She isn’t acting like a Christian Catholic woman. Isee lots of religious symbols in that home - where was this woman’s church? Where was her faith? Did she tithe to her church? Where was their compassion for her? The pet dog probably was licking the deceased woman’s face, hence “eating”. The dog probably starved to death. When elderly people are removed from their homes the “neighborHOOD” immediately breaks into their home and steals possessions and then strips the home of copper and siding. Anything else worth stealing or destroying. Sad all around. Life leaves us no dignity. Life is a predator to the elderly, sick and forgotten. As an 24/7 advocate for a very sick relative who after 10 years eventually recovered enough to resume a fairly independent normal life - I have seen it in person.

She wasn't a hoarder but she had gone up into the attic and the floor broke underneath her. It trapped her in the walls of the house where she eventually died. No one checked in on her. Unfortunately her pets died from starvation because no one checked in on her until it was far too late.

I saw a comment that said something between the lines of check on elderly family members and neighbors and they are absolutely right. I take care of my 88 year old grandmother and she as really numb hands and is in a wheelchair and can’t do much for herself, she thinks she a burden but she really isn’t. She tries to do things for herself and doesn’t like to call on me often for help, but I always ask and do as much as I can, while giving her the independence she needs and wants. Older people do not like calling on younger people for help and that’s okay, we have to learn to help them in a way without them always thinking they are bothering us. I’d be DEVASTATED if my grandma was living by herself like this. So please, if anyone older that you live close to or family with, check in on them or bring the groceries and spend time with them. They love that stuff, it makes the feel appreciated. Much luv everyone💕

There's literally nothing I can find to do. Very sad and traumatic. The "idea" that you can't let them is not in your control. No one leaves people in this state willingly, but if they refuse help and own the property, there's no recourse. It's awful. I don't understand this either, but I've tried everything I can think of. I swear if it looks ok on the outside, no one cares what's happening on the inside. I really feel for this woman.

“To live like this is beyond belief” wtf woman? This 86 year old woman was left alone to do this all be herself. And you’re complaining. You LEFT her. You didn’t bother with her. So in reality it’s your fault, not this poor old woman. Priorities are messed up😣

It's not always easy to know what to do in such a situation. I knew a hoarder once. Three of us (me & a couple of neighbours) took the opportunity of his being in hospital to tidy up his flat, after which he never forgave us...
@manFromPeterborough2 жыл бұрын
My dad's ex bus driver collegue now gov housing manager kept ringing dad up about my hoarding, dad gave me some time to cleanup, he let himself in one morning and saw little progress, he said we're moving in, I told him to get f^*ked, next Saturday he came with 10' cage rental trailer with mum and my 2 brothers inlaw (now ex, both my sisters divorced years later)in tow, I didn't go to their place next Xmass 2000 - 2003. I didn't see dad for next 5 years, mum 3, they divorced in 2003. I had things thrown out dating back a long way, a Xmass gift from 1983 - a 160 in one Science Fair electronics kit my parents gave, that was in a cupboard of spare room my bros in laws were going gung ho with, many electrical items, car hub caps, stereos went

I read the info in the link and it was so sad - the lady’s sister had had a stroke and EMTs decided that Sally also needed to go to hospital because of the state of the house. She signed herself out of the hospital the next day and was never seen alive again. The dog, a Rottweiler, was also found deceased - he had tried to survive by eating her! People who have left disparaging comments - hoarders like this old lady are very secretive - if you meet them outside the home environment you will seldom realise that they have a problem - plus, they actively foil attempts for anyone to enter their home!

For others watching and berating the family, it’s very possible that they were supporting her, and it was just too draining. You can only pay so much money and so much of yourself into trying to help heal someone who doesn’t want it

It's a sad situation when these Elderly People die like this. Nowadays their own Relatives don't give a Damn about the older Folks. I've worked by taking care of the Elderly Folks, & their loved ones didn't come around, until after the Elderly person has died. Just like Buzzards Flying & circling above , & waiting for death to succumb, & wait patiently for $'s, or other properties to be left to them (buzzards).

Independence is for the most part is what we all live for, but some times things go to far and we start to forget that certain someone in our lives that gets left behind, In all the kaos of a modern world. We sometimes scoff at those outside todays norms who still live in a some what primitive tribal comunity, however what they do have is a very strong sence of community where no one is ignored, even though we may consider outselves to be more evolved, it looks like we could learn a lesson, from so called primitive societies.....

It really has nothing to do with not caring. Hoarders DONT let anyone see their house, she kept the outside clean and kept up her appearance (apparently). It would be easy to just do every holiday at someone elses house. And she might of been an old bitch who told her kids to fuck off, we never know the reason. What ever it is is sad.
