Michigan is definitely a sportsman's paradise. I used to go to Lake Michigan every spring and fish for smally's on the rock bar's. Me and my brothers and my nephew have all stayed super close as a result of the bonds we formed. Small mouth Bass hit and fight like no other and they are also delicious.

There's some great fishing out in Lake Erie, too. When I was a kid we always had a boat and every Friday night in the summer we'd head down to Elizabeth Park and launch. Back out and head under the Grosse Ile bridge past the Edison Plant and eventually past Humbug Marina... once you're past the marina you're pretty much coming into open water and while you're still, actually, on the Detroit River that open water you see ahead of you is Lake Erie. On your left you'll see "land", but at this point the "land" you're seeing now isn't Canada. There are two freighter channels that run through the Detroit River... the Livingston channel and the Amherstburg channel. That "land" you've been seeing is the outcropping that forms physical breaker of the nearest channel (Livingston). We'd head straight toward the mouth of the channel and then straight out to the very first buoy. Slow the boat down to about 300rpm, turn it around so you're headed straight toward the mouth, but more toward the spit of "land" forming the west side of the channel. We'd run back and forth trolling that spot all day long and pick up a ton of walleye. The bottom is super rocky there and as you get closer to the mouth the better the bites, because the walleye love hanging out around those rock outcroppings formed by the dump when they dredged the channel. We pulled 27 keepers in 2 hours one Saturday morning out there. You'd think the channel itself would be a great spot to fish... along the sides... and it probably would be, but you don't want to venture too close to the sides of the channel, because it's a LOT shallower than you think. If you want to head down the channel itself, which is a great ride and an awesome spot to open it up, because the water is like glass compared to the chop on the river and the lake, stay toward the middle of the channel. Literally, watched more than one guy take out the bottom of his boat whipping down the channel and far too close to the side and they went down almost immediately (and that's in what was probably a 27 ft. Sea Ray). Great times, great memories out there that I'll never ever forget.
