Yes, you're right. In fact, Rev. Nicks wrote this song for me personally. And I wrote the second verse for it because he hadn't come up with one when we were ready to record. There is a recording of me singing this song (no video) here on KZbin. Renae Thomas did it justice though. We used to sing together in the St. James Choir.

Yes, they sure were great friends. I knew both of them and worked with both. I was part of the original organization Rev. Cleveland formed to create The Gospel Music Workshop of America. What an experience it was to be part of that!

I actually heard the version from Beverly Glenn when she recorded the album in Philly in 1975. In fact, I was at the recording of it at my old church, Deliverance Evangelistic Church when it was on North Broad Street; it was a full house, it featured the Mass Choir and we had CHURCH!! I came across Detroit Mass fairly recently and it reminded me of the gospel music growing up in the 70s and 80s. They hit this one out of the park!

OMG! This brings me to tears of Joy and Sadness. Joy of the Lord at the sounds & sights of Ol'-School Authentic Gospel Praise n Worship that ushers us straight into the Throne Room! Sadness of heart to see the State of Churches today. It seems we've gone from Worship to Performance. This was also refreshing to me because it was void of all Distractions from Holiness via Cleavage, Butt Cheeks, Painted Faces, Panty lines etc.... This was sooooo Refreshing!!! I pray that the Houses of Worship resurrect Choirs that have been replaced by "Praise Teams." I appreciate the Praise Teams, but why can't they Co-exist? We're hard pressed to see Ensembles, Childrens & Youth Choirs, Senior Choirs, Men's Choirs and Quartettes any more. I don't mean any harm, I just sayin'.

You're right about Rev. Charles Nicks having written this song. But if you're interested in the history behind it, I can tell you that he wrote the song for me in the 1970's. I can't remember the exact year. I was a member of the choir. My name was Doris Roberson. I changed it to Dorez in 1980. I'm good friends with Renae Thomas, however. What a blessing that Rev. Nicks' incredible work is able to be heard around the world!

A Detroit Mass Choir standard. Frequently sung by the Ethos Choir of Wellesley College, circa mid 1970s. Ma'dear Maricathryn Evans (1925-1998) always comes to mind.
