People want to save this and that about this plant but have ZERO practical ideas for reasons why. You can't save everything....

Good Riddance you say? It was a part of Detroit's Heritage. My father worked there during WW2 making Merlin Engines. I have heard the structure was built really strong. Too Bad is more like it?

We went thru the same thing in Kenosha Wi. I worked there for 42 years for AMC, Renault and Chrysler. Now it's all gone. The Lakefront plant turned into high dollar condos and a park. Main plant is finally being transferred into a " BEAUTIFUL " something, IDK !

I’m glad the tower is still in place. It would be great if it can be saved and placed somewhere else. So many water towers that were in Detroit have been destroyed.

New, huge, fabulous “Justice Center”. Must have cost hundreds of millions. What a beauty. Then you drive last it through residential areas where every house is abandoned, burnt out, half standing. And the little businesses in brick buildings are all gone; glass broken out, graffiti, and windows boarded up. Weeds everywhere. They must need lots of justice there.

I worked in the Packard plant in the late seventies after graduating from WSU. At that time it was owned by United Technology's Essex Automotive division. At this point, yes, time say goodbye to this slumping collection of buildings. At this point the City and Metropolitan Detroit should continue on redevelopment. It was an auto plant not the Coliseum in Rome...

Sad in several ways as the once great Packard's death and its rotting factory is so emblematic of Detroit, a once thriving powerful city that declined, but the hanging onto it is part of the problem. If it could have been revived or reinvented, it would have been sometime in the 60 odd years it's been sitting, but that time is not returning and the building can no longer meet the needs of the present. To turn to meet the demands of the future and reinvent itself, Detroit must look forward and put haunting ghosts like this to rest. It can be tough to face, but all these kinds of things do is hold one back.

Like others, I'm sad to see it go, but it's been mostly abandoned since 1958. In 66 years there hasn't been a viable use for it, though there have been numerous proposals. The final size of the production floor space was 3.5 million square feet. Way more than any one company could use. Over the years many proposals and alternate uses have failed. During that time it slowly deteriorated to the point that it no longer has any viable potential.

After Packard closed, it was found that multi-story auto plants were inefficient and uneconomical.
