Thanks again for taking the time to explain all of this and film it for us to enjoy, I fell in love with detroits about 20 years ago we had a big old pettibone forklift at work I absolutely fell In Love with it, it had so many awesome features that made it an amazing heavy duty off road forklift. This forklift was used to move drilling rigs before we had it, so I am sure it seen years of abuse, but always fired right up. I envision a rusty stake truck and matching rusted trailer Detroit powered with Jake’s in my own future.

Every time I lay eyes on the 4-53 bare block, the more amazing it is, how chunky and over engineered it is. The trick to polishing journals red neck style.........is fine grit wet and dry, wrapped around with boot laces, hold the laces taught and rapidly pull each end up and down to spin the wet and dry around the journal. brings them up mirror finish.

You got a great deal on the buy there. Just the head with a problem.

Yeah it was a great deal, was just the head and everything else is in good shape.:)

Detroit Garage I don't think you can put the crankshaft in before you put the rear plate on. PS the oil plugs in the rod throws need to come out to get the rest of the crud out of the crank. I'm glad you have something good to work with, that makes life go better.
@detroitgarage94303 ай бұрын
I have to pull the timing gear and replace it, so I can put rear plate on then.:)

You should get some of those long bottle washer brushes and clean all the oil passages out,,,You can bet even after pressure washing there full of gunk and old oil ,,,And probably rust if it was outdoors for 10 years,,,,
@detroitgarage94303 ай бұрын
That's a great idea.:) I'm confident the pressure washer and my engine cleaners have done the job.:)

You have several times mentioned to have upgraded to silver parts and configuration. Can you detail the main differances ..and kinda highlight what a guy with an older N can do when he goe to freshen and install in his project?

And now binging your newer stuff I see where you have said several times you are planning on just that. Sorry to be a nuisance

@detroitgarage9430 I to have recently retired and have been collecting detroits for a bit and have been planning on a build for years. I have an old 453N and am wanting to put together a daily. Also have two trucks with 6V53N's and am just trying to learn what is easily upgraded.

@@greywuuf Nice, for a daily driver I highly recommend a 4-53T.:) I’ll cover that in the differences video and what’s needed to convert an N engine to a T.:)

Can you still get ReliaBuilt 4-53T cylinder head? What was this unit originally powering?
@detroitgarage94303 ай бұрын
Yes, still available, around $2400.00 for a Reliabilt and $3800.00 for the new Detroit heads. For fully assembled they Reliabilt they are $6800.00. The engine came out of a Clarke 667B skidder. Was a repower unit from what I understand, not sure what the engine did before that.

You should at least spray brake cleaner through the oil galleys in the crank,,,Air will not get all the particulate out,,
@detroitgarage94303 ай бұрын
I used an engine cleaner as well as the pressure washer through all of the oil galleries. I'm more than confident that they are clean. The air is just to get rid of any dust while I scraped the gaskets off.:)
