Air date: 1/15/15. We head north to show you why our state’s upper half is a place you just have to visit. The first part of our odyssey takes us all the way to the top of the mighty Mackinac Bridge. Then we eat with an army of Antlers and fall in love with Tahquamenon. We'll even visit a ranch you’ll ‘bear’ly believe, and prepare pasties like pros. Episode 506.

I was stationed, as an American servicemen, in Cornwall England with the British royal Air Force, so I have had the real deal Cornish pasties. The Yoopers have definitely carried on a long tradition over this Cornish food history. Just one of those will fill you up!

I surprised they served you gravy for the pasty… only trolls would dare consider this option. Ketchup is pushing the limit for most Yoopers

is it legal to transport split firewood from the UP to the LP

Hell no. You would be transporting tree killing bugs and insects. I have red pine trees that are dying from the infestation of red pine beetles. Keep your wood at home. Stop spreading tree and plant diseases. If you gotta burn wood in your outdoor fire pit, burn your furniture.

Incredibly irresponsible to portray black bears as "gentle giants", "gentle creatures".

As long as you're smart around them, they are gentle. A lot more timid than some squirrels I've encountered. I've done lots of field work along the central coast of British Columbia where we would very often have CLOSE run-ins with black bears. I've have some stupidly close encounters. Yet, no problems. Black bears are gentle, in my opinion. They will NOT be gentle if some approaches them intentionally, especially if a mother has cubs. In 99.99% of cases when a bear does decide to charge (which is very rare) they will most often false charge to scare you or knock you over and run away. They really are quite harmless, unless you're a jackass with a camera or being irresponsible with your trash. Their size gives them a bad rep.

Bozeman, I was born and raised in the U.P., when I was about 7 & 8 years old, living in Amasa, my brother Ed & I would go to the open garbage dump, hide behind the bushes and watch the bears rifling through the trash. At times there might have been 5 to 8 bears there. They never bothered us. Then once, when I was about 9 I was walking a trail through the woods down to the beach, I remember there were apples in the wild trees, I encountered a mother bear with a fun there on the trail. I simply stopped in my tracks, she looked at me, grunted and she headed out through the woods with her cub. They only want to be left alone, yes they can be " gentle"...I personally have never heard of any bear attacks here in the U.P. Not saying there haven't been any, I've just never personally heard of any. They will attack though, I've had bears crashing through my shed door to get to the garbage, dragging the bags outside to tear them up. There were so many bears in our area that the DNR set out live traps in the neighborhood to catch them, then haul them away to different areas.
