Detty December has been a street slang in Nigeria for decades, further popularised by legendary Fela Kuti . But it started gaining acceptance when Donard Duke used it at the Calabar Carnival in 2004. Mr Eazy didn't popularise it, he only jumped on it to do his show in 2019.

It doesn't matter who started it first, as long as everyone enjoys themselves. It looks lit in both countries, that's why you have some people going to both in the same year. I can see it spreading to other African countries in the future, to make it a bigger festival.

There isn’t a single original Nigerian genre going back to the 70s and 80s that could’ve morphed into Afrobeats. Ghana has highlife, Azonto, and hiplife that transitioned into Afrobeats. Having said that Nigeria clearly has many top Afrobeats artistes but it doesn’t mean they’re the originators.
@adetao598512 сағат бұрын
Morphed!! Lmao. Listen!! Fela is the father of Afrobeats, lol. Leave it alone. Just because he visited Ghana once doesn’t mean they can claim they gave it to him-something he’s been pioneering in his underwear for decades, haha .
@dadoboye153611 сағат бұрын
@ visited? Fela himself told Voice of America VOA in 1970 that his music is highlife and jazz, and get this…that Ghana bands were better than Nigerian. Go and get educated about Fela. His first band’s name had Highlife in it.
@adetao598511 сағат бұрын
@@dadoboye1536 I know what highlife music sounds like, and it’s not Afrobeat haha. Fela’s Afrobeat is a groundbreaking fusion of Yoruba rhythms, American funk, and jazz, with its own unique identity and purpose. Unlike the lighthearted and melodic nature of highlife, Afrobeat is rhythmically complex, politically charged, and deeply rooted in Fela’s vision of African identity. Stop exaggerating the connection , lol . These are two distinct genres with entirely different foundations. And Give me the link to where Fela said - Ghanian bands are better than Nigerian bands , lol .

You are right about the influx of blacks in the carribbeans and Americas visiting Ghana since Post-Covid, and this was because of the intentionality of your govt. in marketing your country to Africans of enslaved descents, which is a good thing. Coming back to Nigeria, since time immemorial Nigeria's detty December participants have majorly being Nigerians in diaspora + Nigerians at home . The 2024 Nigeria's detty December surprised we Nigerians that are at home because at no point did our govt initiate a campaign, promo, or a project for easy access to our visas to encourage anybody to come to Nigeria for our yearly event (like the "Year of Return" & even "beyond the return" in Ghana). Nigerian government is not big on tourism. Imagine if we now as a country are intentional about welcoming the historical diasporans/tourists as you guys did. I just can't fathom the huge influx of people that will come in. Besides, personally I don't want an event that will encourage the huge influx of people into an already populated country. Adding more will stretch the infrastructures that is barely enough for our population. The job of welcoming shoould be caarried out by other west-african countries that are much lesser in population than us. So I just pray it continues to be more of an in-house thing amongst only we Nigerians😊.

The Year of Return initiative launched in 2019 in Accra Ghana put West Africa on the map. Previously, non-Africans weren’t really talking about Detty December and didn’t know much about the holidays festivities across the continent. Africans would travel to their respective countries to party during the holidays and that was it. After Ghana announced the Year of return initiative, it attracted so many tourists including Nigerians themselves to visit Ghana during the Christmas holidays, and that’s when everyone started talking about Detty December. Whether or not Detty December started in Nigeria, Ghana globalized it. Many African Americans only heard about it cos everyone was going to Ghana for Christmas. You’re just in denial if you dont think this is true

I mean now that Nigeria is open everyone wants to claim…. Imitation is a form of flattery. So yeah we own it but others can borrow and expand it… if brongs unity…. Just like hip hop it’s our African American family that created it but to see the influence in Afro beats so did we create it? No we love it and feel it’s amazing. But don’t claim it.
