When you said to me a video game is "mature" and "for adults" I expect things like this, events or ideas made intelligently, put there for you to think and reason and above else, for you to take its story seriously. When this kind of things happen is when you can tell this game was made not only for the economic side, it´s a labor of passion for the brand and for the universe of this fiction. That was an ingenious move from the devs, because it goes against every single established trope of sandbox RPGs. While most of them have some sort of main goal that paints a sense of urgency on the game (stop an apocalypse, exact vengeance, find your dad/son, etc), but then turns around and throws a whole box of monkey wrenches into it. After introducing the main story, the game usually shoves a trove of tutorials, arbitrary side-missions, quests and gameplay mechanics in your face, plus a huge open world. Not only do these games flood you with intentional distractions, entice you to explore with clever world design and scripted set pieces, but even if you want to go straight for the goal sometimes the game outright drops the anchor on the main story until you completed enough of the side-stuff, and only then it'll let you pick it up again (like basically all Bethesda games)...for a while. These tactics do make the game varied, so you don't get bored of being railroaded on the main quest, but it also destroys quite a bit of immersion and invalidates the motivation of the protagonist. When you can spend literal weeks and months in-game with basically just screwing around without any consequences to the supposedly incredibly time-sensitive main plot, it just negates any sense of urgency. "Sure, I'll go search for my kidnapped son and the killers of my wife...BUT FIRST, oooh shiny" With Human Revolution, like most people, I failed the first mission spectacularly for this exact reason, because, like so many times before, I thought the game wanted me to explore, to learn about the world and do side stuff before I picked up the main story. When you get dropped into the compound, there's the stealth/loud/lethal/non-lethal tutorial with obviously purpose made map sections to teach you the basics. So, as usual, I took my sweet time silently hunting down all the baddies, didn't want to mess up my fresh silent run, obviously. Little did I know what I was in for... suddenly the radio crackled to life and I was bluntly told the hostages are all dead....and it's all my fault for faffing about... I still remember the shock, the dread and the sadness. It was the first time in a long time, when I actually felt embarrassed for not taking the game seriously. I felt, that I somehow failed the game itself. They did tell me it was urgent, but how was I supposed to know it was _urgent_ urgent. I thought "damn, I actually need to pay attention to what the game tells me". I was so much under the effect of what transpired, that I completely forgot it was a video game and I could just reload and try again. It was a genuine teaching moment. I felt just like when I was scolded by my parents as a kid. I went on and suffered the consequences of my actions and vowed not to make the same mistake again. And damn right, the next time I was told something was urgent, I was on the ball like a hawk. "I'll be damned if I'm gonna let any more innocent people die because I was hunting for collectibles". I don't think I was this immersed in any other game before...

I agree. It may be another thing but when I played Batman Arkham City I fucking rushed the game. I feel like playing this way I get more into the game and its story. I dont like doing that things that arent part of the plot. The same with GTA games.
@Playbahnosh6 жыл бұрын
@Nicolas S. Well, that's the thing, for most devs it's some sort of rule to insert a sense of urgency into the game, most relevantly into sandbox-adventure games, to give the player a reason to do the main mission. Otherwise, they feel, players wouldn't be inclined to progress the story if they don't have a reason to. This is really noticeable in the first few hours of such games, where the player is usually outright forced to either escape from or rush towards some sort of danger. After the initial catharsis, the game usually levels out and gives the player some breathing room to explore on their own, do side-content, etc, only to put them back on the frantic railroad again some time later, and keep swinging back and forth between these states. Video game devs have already boiled this down a science, how to give their games a sort of "flow", how and when to insert set pieces, scripted events, dialogue, action sequences, to maximize exhilaration without overwhelming the player or outpacing their attention span, and also when to let go and leave the player to faff about for a while. That's why, if you faff about too much, most of these games start nagging you to go and pick up the main story by reinserting that sense of urgency (radio messages, popups, timers, etc). That is also why a lot of these "drop the anchor", outright blocking you from progressing the main story, because people would finish the game too fast without experiencing a lot of content which was very expensive to make.

What's so good about making choices that don't afffect you in any way, except the xp you get/need? It's the only thing worth mentioning in HR, since the level design is quite straight-forward, but can be explored if you're a perfectionist. This will also reward you like finding the security rooms and so on, but jeez it's so friggin easy, all you gotta do is invest some time and you're gonna be so op that the boss fights are like a walk in the park... (and yes, I mean on the highest difficulty) This game has only maybe 30% of what made the original title, Deus Ex 1, so great. HR is atleast 3 times more casual than what you experience in the first title, since there are also a lot of side-missions in HR which AGAIN give you a hefty reward just for going here and there, while even the story of the first title stood out so much while also having a rather complicated but rewarding kind of gameplay. I guess no one cares about classics anymore tho, and I have to admit that I enjoyed HR as well just because I could chill in there, but Deus Ex 1 was simply an experience you can only have once And Jesus, admit that the mechanics of the game are ridiculous lmao

There are very interesting parallels between Human Revolution and the first Deus Ex in how they use their first missions to teach the player about the gravity of their decisions and the respect they should have for the game world. You note that there are two kinds of player who are likely to get funneled into a failure of the hostage rescue objective in Human Revolution -- the kind who ignore what the "main story" is telling them in favor of exploring the game world at their leisure, and the kind who just blindly follows objective markers without really paying much attention to their environment. Both of these groups have been conditioned by other games that reward them for falling into these habits, both of which turn out to be a deliberate trap in HR's first mission. You also discuss how the confrontation with Zeke cautions players to think carefully before they speak and weigh the likely outcomes, rather than assume that the game will cater to their freedom to make purely cosmetic choices. Deus Ex was facing a similar challenge in bringing its audience into its game world back in 2000. Fans of contemporary shooters were accustomed to a "shoot first, ask questions later" style of gameplay, and in many cases would expect to be able to skip over dialogue entirely. When the player gets up to the top of the Statue of Liberty and encounters the terrorist leader Leo Gold, they'll be surprised to find him immediately surrender. However, if they spam the spacebar in dialogue, they'll pick the threatening option, which Ion Storm deliberately set as the first dialogue choice as a trap for players who aren't paying attention. This option forces Leo into a (likely deadly) confrontation which will ultimately lead to the player being chastised by their handler, their brother, and their boss (you can also allow Leo to escape and the game has a distinct response for it). Moreover, the player's options look fairly similar to one another; "Except send YOU back to the people -- in a body bag", and "Tell me about the shipment and I'll order the troops to pick you up as a prisoner instead of a corpse". Both imply a threat of lethal force but only one of them, if read carefully, clearly offers Leo a peaceful resolution. There's also a parallel in that DX's first mission also has an optional side objective involving a hostage, which the player can easily miss if they take the sneaky route in and continue up the obvious path to the top of the statue rather than going back down and tackling the more substantial challenges on the ground floor. Though there's no objective marker guiding them to the critical path, their handler will actually tell them that they're on the right track and can freely ignore the side objective if they keep going, which is as good a reason as any to plow ahead rather than turn back. You could also draw a parallel between the SWAT officer who offers valuable mission intel in HR and Harley Filben in DX, who the player is told to look for on the North dock for a key to the statue and some tips, since both could be easily ignored by a less inquisitive player. The roots of HR's first mission design that you've articulated can be firmly seen in DX's first mission, and it's clear that Eidos Montreal was looking to make a similar statement to its players about how they should approach the game. Both impress upon the player that they shouldn't treat the experience like "just another game", and give it the respect they'd give a dangerous situation in real life. Arguably DX does a better job following up on this promise, but... that's a topic for another day ;) BTW, I liked that you redid this video with a far superior voiceover, though I miss some of the editing of the original version. Particularly the Ferris Bueller "Oh Yeah" track when exploring Sarif HQ (ending in a brilliant "Chikachika!" after we hear the bad news), and some of the image/text gags you included before. Oh well, glad you're getting more attention for this (Also, holy shit another person who loves In Bruges! Will check out your other videos for sure).
@OrangeLightnings6 жыл бұрын
Awesome comment - I played through the Statue of Liberty mission years ago (almost certainly did poorly), and wasn't aware of how much Eidos Montreal were using it as a reference point. The similarities are clear, with both the hostage in the base of the monument, the leader at the top, and the intel officer. Had to get rid of "Oh Yeah", used it in my Office video, too many times in close proximity. I miss the shooting gag, too, but it was more distracting in this version than the last one. In Bruges is so good I shut it off in the first 20 minutes, got some friends together, and forced them to watch it with me. It's a masterpiece from the words "Bruges is a shithole."

_"The game proper starts when it drops you in Sarif Industries. The big man himself tells you that there's a hostage situation and people's lives are at stake but this is your first opportunity to explore the world."_ This really bugged me about the game. The level itself is encouraging you to explore it, but everyone IN the level is telling you to "hurry up and get to the helipad to deal with the hostage situation." This level should have been saved for *after* the hostage mission, just like in the original _Deus Ex_ game.

But it's just one mission. And it doesn't affect the rest of the game much. A great idea, but this game has not realized it. I don't think any game in existence has been able to realize it yet. However, Deus Ex has been given credit for making it work, even though it never did. And what's worse is, the only reason why you do explore every nook and cranny in the first place, is because you have no choice and freedom at all, once you go forward, you can't go back. So you look everywhere in case you miss anything, which turns the game into a tedious chore. (btw shooting Zeke is only an unsafe option if you're not using a mouse)

DXHR is a more than worthy addition to the Deus Ex saga. It was the first game I played that allowed your foes to revive their comrades if they were merely unconscious. But this is sometimes a blessing in disguise, because you can bring the next guy to exactly where you want them to be, then take him out. I remember the 8 hostages dying because of my delay and exploration the 1st time I played, but I got the Silver Tongue bonus for convincing Zeke to go quietly and let the final hostage live.

@tigerheaddude6 жыл бұрын
My biggest gripe with this game is that it kinda strongarms you into playing stealthily and nonlethaly with not much incentive for anything else. If you choose to play lethally and loudly you miss out on a lot of creds and hence upgrades which kind of defeats the purpose of choosing your own approach to the levels. A better way would be something akin to Jak 3, where the more you used the "light" powers, the more you could upgrade them, and the more you used the "dark" powers the more you could upgrade them.

Putting this in my 'deep dive video' playlist and subscribed. This video is exactly why I fell in love with this game. The atmosphere and the dialogue that the world gives us and the importance of paying our attention to it are fun. Having that neuron fired in your brain when you're in a situation and think on the spot, having a 'what if' moment and see if it could affect the story in any way is incredible. I have a moment after failing multiple times with the Zeke hostage dialogue, and then I just thought "What if I shoot him, but faster?" And I was surprised it actually works. A lot of these moments do happen in the game and I had fun every single time.

Mankind Divided is the most polished half finished game I have ever played. The potential to be a superior sequel was there, and squandered, presumably to sell a "part 3" that I don't think is coming. Here's hoping Cyberpunk delivers something great.

Luckily, even though the final mission in MD came far too quickly, it at least took the time to test the player's abilities with a multi-part level on an invisible clock. I think if the game had just one more mission after that it would have felt a little more complete. The whole game we knew we were only chasing a pawn of the illuminati, it would have been nice to go after the bigger fish, even for a moment. The game ended with Adam defeating Victor and the shadow agents, much like how in HR he saved the scientists and defeated the final boss Namir. However, Instead of ending there, HR continued with hints beginning to unfold into the climax at Panchea. In MD, we know the "attack" on Versalife, Page, Janis, and a world-breaking secret that many players missed will be revealed the next game. What if MD had a more action-packed climax that actually set us up for these things to come? Picture this scenario: After the terrorist attack is thwarted, Jenson immediately gets word from Alex Vega or Duncan McReady that the situation changed. Victor and the Shadow Operatives were on a much tighter leash, and that their flawed attack lacked subtlety (much like Dubai) because it was intended to draw out Jenson and Interpol into the Illuminati's attention. (think about how long Victor stalled time, even when he was in control of an ultimatum). In this hypothetical scenario, Janis had located the /real/ Illuminati operatives (Tyrants?) overseeing the attack, or McReady's team encountered them while attempting to disarm the bombs. Now it is up to Jenson to stop them and catch his only lead before they slip back into the shadows. Now Jenson has to explicitly disobey orders to risk following them. Maybe it can be an illusion of choice where he can choose to let them go, follow from a distance, or actively try to stop them, yet all choices would result in the operatives getting away; making the trail go cold which sets us up for the next game all the same. The chase sequence (which are so few and far between for a Cyberpunk game like DX) would only involve a linear map through London that leads to the eventual enemy extraction (Apex Tower Courtyards, downtown, construction buildings, secret observation post/base of operations, subway station, rooftops, etc. the possibilities are endless). At most, the only evidence left behind would be more dead Shadow Operatives that'll just be wrapped up with the terrorist attack. Only Jenson's eyewitness account of the "Tyrants" would prove otherwise. An account that he would most likely withhold to keep unwanted eyes inside Interpol off of his back. Its a hypothetical mission that would result in the same ending, but would add just a bit more icing on the small cake to pass of as a climax. An actual attempt to go after the big players just like the last game. Instead of being left with the feeling that all that effort accomplished nothing in the big picture, The player may be left with the feeling that they actually tried to get there, and that reminder would definitely give a better sense of scale and 'height' off the edge of this cliffhanger mystery.

Totally not on board with the idea that a huge percentage of players lost the hostages due to time, or even at all. Or lost Josie more than half the time. I have as much in the way of evidence as the maker of the video, but it seems absurd to me that people bombed that badly.
@przemysawzanko67006 жыл бұрын
I believe many people lost the hostages due to time (I certainly did) simply because the game doesn't explain to you that this can happen and players are conditioned to think that unless there's a ticking timer on-screen, they can just explore the world forever and ignore the plot.. Honestly I think this highlights all the negative aspects of the game. It teaches you rush into every main quest, tells you that you have side content that you'll never get to do, and criticizes you for killing anyone, or if you do the side content, or if you take your time, or if you think. So in summery, the game wants you rush into everything, ghost, and ignore all the side content. It also shows off it's unbelievable dialog and bad writing.

Supposed to fail? Hardly. Finding the hostages is very easy, you have to be very unlucky or extremely disinterested to miss them. As for the waiting too much bit; most players assume the introduction to the game isn't over yet (since you just got a HUD) so they skip exploring the building. Those who do also may postpone doing the side mission since it's fairly obvious you have to do the main mission first. Overall, it's very unlikely for someone to fail this mission. Your title is a hyperbole.
@beancheesedip83376 жыл бұрын
Well, my first play through, I missed the hostage room completely, second play through I fucked around because I didn’t know that it was actually a timed situation since I started the mission immediately the first time, and only found out about their deaths after I finished the mission, and it wasn’t until the third play through did I really take the time to start exploring every nook and cranny of the world. But I think that’s why it works as a tutorial. Yeah, it’s not some ultra secret area that’s hidden behind 17 level 5 panels on the first mission, so it isn’t something that everybody will just walk past without knowing about it, but it also works because often times, big RPGs like this encourage exploration and taking your time, especially in the Deus Ex franchise, so adding it in only improves the tone, especially since the hostages can still die while you’re in the middle of the mission, meaning that stealth is viable, but you can’t wait for thirty five minutes until the guard in front of you sneezes so you can perform a takedown. Not too difficult to find, but still off the beaten path enough to require a bit more exploration, but still an interesting mechanic to put in to reprimand those that decide to mess around before or during the mission.

Nice, I liked your original and this one. I only played a little bit of Deus Ex and didn't realise there was so many outcomes in just the first level, shame it pretty much just this level that does this.
@OrangeLightnings6 жыл бұрын
It's still one more than Mankind Divided had. I really struggle to think of many other games that do this. The Witcher 3 has a major quest line that ends poorly for most players. In that case, I think the purpose is to communicate your inability to decide the outcome, which is really powerful too.
@jwheelbro6 жыл бұрын
Do you think it's even possible for a game to have lots branching paths but still be engaging all the way through, because I can imagine how difficult it must be to create a game with a ton of choices that matter but still be an engaging story?
@OrangeLightnings6 жыл бұрын
Oh I don't even think you really need branching paths, just different outcomes. This mission probably takes an hour, it's largely self contained, and there are only 3 variables that affect the outcome (save/fail the hostages, Josie, and Zeke). In the late game, you have the option to purchase a "bio-chip", that will fix some minor glitches in the UI, but all the computer terminals allude to the fact that this is a trick. If you've been reading the emails, you will realize that you should NOT get the chip, but if you haven't, a late game boss fight will be more challenging. It's not much of a branching path, but it's so much more interesting than a binary dialogue choice. I actually think branching paths are kind of overrated, for exactly the reason you stated. I think it's a good thing that your choices all lead to the same end in The Walking Dead. Life is Strange probably shouldn't have given the player the final choice like it did. The Witcher 3 has a bunch of different endings, but one of them is much better than the others. I think it's cool to see the story acknowledge your gameplay, but that interaction doesn't really have to reverberate very deeply. It's also not something that suits every type of game, though I'd say all immersive sims (Deus Ex, Dishonored, Prey) would all be better served.

Do you remember that thing with the Tower that was blocking some signal or hacking Seraph. (I can't remember) Well, basically ya also need to go there with the side mission you get from ya old cop buddy undercover as a whore. The tower is already there to be disabled. With some extra dialog. This all after that mision you just show in this vid. With that indeed if ya rescue the janitor and the wife and also knockout all enemies non lethal. with that boss guy. You all get different things, even if ya said you dont. Ya do later in the game. That first mission is like a character system in an RPG. Everything you do, will affect the rest of the game. But indeed not the endings, but the road you take to get there. There are free upgrades on the mision for pistols. With the gun of the boss being a strong one later in the game. Or you can let em go and get some info later in the game, Or indeed save stun him and find him in jail. You say that this first mission has stuff totally non important to endgame. Yet you forget it is full of stuff that influence the road to it. But indeed it is filled with a lot of choices. Also, after ya take down or let go the boss, you can walk back and get all the loot. Like really, all of it. Except the ones from the terrorists. So, indeed again. That mision is BIG.. But as I say, its like an RPG, to make your version of jenson come out, to take the road to endgame.

"This first mission is so good!" Not really. I understand it's significance, giving you a sense of urgency and making you take your time to iron out the details. But it lacks any player freedom. You want to explore because you don't know if you can do it again after saving the hostages or even if you'll see the same content. You want to go in guns blazing, but you can't because the hostages will die. You want to take your time and find a safe way to the hostages but you took too long so the hostages died. You want to play the game your way but you can't because the game wants you to play it the way it wants you to play it. The later Deus Ex games are really hamfisted about forcing you into corners and it annoys me. I only played the first mission of the most recent one, Mankind Divided, and it was everything I hate. I wasn't allowed to do what I want, just what the game wants. If I approached the game with my own mentality then shit hit the fan. In contrast; MGSV, a massive sandbox, has SO much more you can do. Its missions are usually time gated, but you have time to explore. You can go in guns blazing usually and you can play the game how you want. The more recent Deus Ex games have been such pissy examples of gaming. Why make a game about forcing players down a path but also they choose to only partially not follow that path but if they skew too far then you're screwed. Tl;dr I don't like Deus Ex anymore because decisions I make are driven by how the game wants me to interact with it. I can sort of make the game mine by doing a mission slightly differently from the next player, but none of the decisions are ones I can make to influence the game in a drastic way. You pretty much play the game the exact same way as hundreds of other players before you have and that's the only way to play it.

When I first play this game, I noticed there are so many details on it and in that time I know I have pay attention to many things, so i look at my computer, see the same email like you did and went to start my detective mode, i thought i am doing something good for helping the company but then it is a lose end, and I failed to save the hostages. At that point I start learnt that really everything matters on this game. Dialogue, environment, even the choice to save your partner life in the later session are matters. It's the first immersive sims game I played and it's the best. Thx for the video!

I had no idea. I'm generally that one person who takes game's urgency relatively seriously, so I completely ignored that sidequest, thinking "It'll still be there when I get back". Saved the hostages by going through the vent too. And as for Zeke, I got him to leave without Josie. Getting any civilians killed seemed like a bad idea. I don't know if many people know this, but if you get Zeke to leave without Josie, he actually comes back and helps you later in the game. Just FYI.

I love the Deus Ex reboot, both have great atmosphere, draw you into their worlds, make you make choices, and through level design, dialogue and tidbits left around give you a great sense of place in the world. I also like how stealth is rewarded but it doesn't stop you from going guns blazing, especially at the end.

I don't normally comment or like videos I come across hap-hassidely, but good job man, I enjoyed the video.

I went for the Hitman play style on that mission and proceeded to kill every little guy there, but let Zeke escape after he released the hostage, which led to everyone at Sharif thinking I'm a murderous, bloodthirsty psycho while Sarif himself was just pissed that I let Zeke go.
