It astounded me, given I literally fine toothcomb through all immersive sims, it amazed me how I spent over 50 hours just exploring the city of Prague itself external to most of the missions. It was so well designed. Dishonored, Prey, Thief, they've all felt immersive but Mankind Divided was a different kind when it came to the city.... Nothing would break the immersion for fucking days at a time, I've not experienced that in over a decade.

Selling micro-transactions and tying DLC weapons to single-use-self-deleting into a single player game, and signalling to everybody that they had cut the game in half intentionally to sell more later as mission-for-cash DLC killed this franchise. I'm so glad you said what you said @7:58, because I have been saying this as well. The exact themes that Deus Ex touched on are a big reason why we won't see anymore games in this franchise. We are almost (if not already) in that Futuristic dystopian society where government are in full control, corporations are working hand in hand with government "for the betterment of the people" they claim and the people don't even realize how close we are to this dystopian future. I could not imagine a new Deus Ex game touching on the themes the past games, especially not buy some AAA dev/publisher, but I could see some indie dev taking up the slack and making an ode to the deus Ex games with very deep writing and themes intact. We live in strange times for sure and as much as I love the Deus Ex games (especially the OG) I feel the themes just won't be as impactful as they use to be. Still it sucks how the IP was handled but at the same time I'm not surprised.

This is not corporate greed, this is sheer stupidity. This is like having a load of buildings that each used to be a great hotel, is full of great staff but you refuse to open any of the hotels for business. You make money from games studios by having them make games, not by trying to get someone else to buy up the derelict buildings to fix the years of neglect that you inflicted on them. Embracer Group wasn't greedy. They were lazy. They didn't want to cultivate their investment they just wanted to package it all up into a tranche where they just had one big bundle to get some sucker sovereign wealth fund to buy up. They could have made more money by putting these studios to work but they weren't interested in making something worth selling.

Hi, the video was great but I would like to bring up somethings about the story I think are worth mentioning. You mention DX:MD's story being cut in half, but something you didn't discuss is that the story seemed to have been rewritten at some point after announcement. The hoodie character that the announcement trailer focused on was remove apart from some in game text, Marchenko's final fight/design didn't reflect the whole "first gen aug" theme the devs announced. The Dvali theater we see ingame was present in the trailer, but it seemed to have been Marchenko's base in the trailer. We also saw the Blade in the announcement trailer but it wasn't present until we got the DLC. I've not played in a while but all of these changes from the first trailer/demos to final release convince me that the game's story was hit far more than just being cut in half.
@adammaximum5 ай бұрын
Honestly, I don't find any of that too unusual. There are plenty of games with content that changes dramatically between announcement trailers and the game's release, story or otherwise. It could be argued that this constitutes false advertising to a certain extent (see BioShock Infinite's pre-release advertising campaign vs. the version we got), but elements shifting during development seems to be pretty normal.

What about those mystery augmentations? If Adam was indeed a clone, what happened to the original? Was Elisa (HR) or her 'clone' related to the AIs from the first game? And, most importantly, what is the connection between Adam (clone or not) to the Denton Brothers

Unfortunately, I don't think that would happen unless Mary DeMarle (the lead writer for both HR and MD who now works for BioWare) retires, otherwise it could put her future work into jeopardy. Sure there are a few exceptions here and there but for the most part you can be pretty sure you're not really missing out on anything if you just ignore the "big releases". Maybe it's for the best Deus Ex: Mankind Devided was the last entry in the series as for now. I feel like it's better to let the AAA market eat itself alive and pick up the pieces once this greedy shitshow is over. Indiegames are where the interesting stuff is happening now.

Yeah this makes me very sad. I still remember playing HR for the first time. The sense of wonder underneath the dark dystopian cloud of the Deus Ex universe was something to behold. It went on to influence me in my own creativity, specifically with a book I'm getting traditionally published. The music, the atmosphere, the dirty underworld and scheming, it made it all possible. I hope by some hail marry of a chance that the third game see's the light of day.

Deus Ex, the whole saga, is one of the most complex, sophisticated and prophetic storylines to ever been offered as "games", and like you i was having high hopes that a sequel to MD was going to see the light of day some time between 2025/2028 approx. This is very very sad news and also infuriating, It seems quality games are slowly fading out, and it's unfair considering the HUGE AMOUNT OF CRAP companies are putting out, but i better stop right there, getting too fired up with wffing idiots running things

I just found this video, pleased to say that I already have the EPIC Games release from that date. though I do not have the DLC, when I first learned of Embracer group I thought they were a good thing a breath of fresh air, turns out they are no different, just had a better breath mint than the others.

The original Deus Ex is, to this day, my favourite PC and Playstation 2 game. Invisible War isn't a bad game (though it's not particularly good, either), but it is a *terrible* Deus Ex game. They actually got rid of so many of the features that helped make the first game so deservedly popular, such as the skill points, the way you have to upgrade your weapons skills or you remain a terrible shot with them), an *interesting* story and memorable characters who you actually cared about, locations that felt like they were set on Earth (seriously, in Invisible War, it felt like you were living in tiny segmented areas that might as well have been on another planet). Even the A.I. of the NPCs felt better in the original game, despite the original game's A.I. being less than impressive. Both Human Revolution and Mankind Divided were much better Deus Ex games, thankfully. Not up the original's standards, of course, but they were both pretty great. It's a real pity that the franchise seems to be dead (or at least trapped in cryogenics), and that no major companies (the ones with the money and pull to be able to make immersive sims) seem bothered about making similar games. The brilliant Prey (2017) apparently sold rather badly, so that might have also been a factor in the industry's reluctance to give us more immersive sims.

If they hadn't rushed mankind divided, and had properly finished the story and left out the micro-transactions, it would have been an absolute gem. Prague was a hub world the way Specter envisioned it. Sadly HQ was dull A.F.

You should never be hopeful when studios get sold/bought in bulk. It's a much better outcome when 1 specific studio gets bought and even that is risky (Rare for example)

Thanks for the details. I can't remember who said it, but I remember reading an interview a long time ago saying that Deus Ex wouldn't be revived because it's genre/subject matter just isn't popular and profitable enough to be worth making. The average gamer doesn't want to be in an anxiety ridden world, it's all about hyper saturated colours and cutesy characters.

I feel the same way man. What Embracer group did to KOTOR, Darksiders, Thief and Deus Ex. There are probably many more that I'm not even aware of. Sad thing is we stopped getting original franchises and games like this these days. Big studios mainly make yet another Call Of Assassins Creed over and over again but with more cash shop fluff. The only studios that actually trying to make something new are the indies. Sadly with mixed results. Also..What a way to end the video :D

Thanks for the video. Hey, atleast they didn't treat the Deus Ex IP as badly as they did with Thief. I grew up with Deus Ex and Thief being my favourite games, but Thief was always just that little bit more special to me. Been building missions on the editor for decades.
@adammaximum8 ай бұрын
Yeah…if Deus Ex is dead, then Thief is deader than dead. The thing with Thief is that I don’t think any modern interpretation of the series would do any sort of justice to the original trilogy because those games tend to be so subtle and intentionally understated in their stories and world building. And Eidos-Montréal, bless them, don’t do subtlety in storytelling very well. Even if Thief 2014 wasn’t a complete mess of a production, I still don’t think it would’ve been handled very well.
