Deutsch Direkt 1

Part 1 of the German Language Course For Beginners.
Introduction:
Deutsch Direkt was first broadcast by the BBC Learning Zone in the mid 1980's. It was recorded before the reunification of Germany and before the introduction of the Euro.
The course book is still available to buy online and it was comments from reviews of the book which prompted me to post this series of videos. e.g. 'I wish I could find a copy of the programmes. I looked on KZbin, but they're not there'.
On this basis, I hope they will prove to be a useful learning resource for individuals and classes.
The programmes have all been digitised from original VCR recordings made by myself, so please excuse me if the quality isn't 100%. They were played many times over when I was learning to speak German myself.
There are twenty lessons of approximately twenty-five minutes each and I hope you enjoy them all.

What's incredible about this video, is that it can be watched by anyone and be as accessible. Perhaps germanic speakers have some edge, but if you take the principle of my point it's profound that a video like this with such care to explain can literally be watched by anyone, of any time period in any place in the world and be meaningful.

Just wanted to second all the people who are delighted that you have put this on KZbin. I watched this in the 1980s and managed to record some of the later programmes but have been really wanting to see the earlier programmes. Did you manage to record them all from the television? You cannot imagine how happy you have made me. Incidentally I visited Volkach in 1999 and spoke to both Leo Langer and Waldemar Sperling. I bought wine from Herr Langer and Herr Sperling gave me a free bottle. The programmes were recorded in 1983 I think, going by the date of publication of the book. You can still buy the book but the programmes do not exactly match the content of the book.

I recorded the whole series when it was first shown as a BBC Learning Zone/ Open University collaboration in 1984. They were all digitised using a video capture card and uploaded when I was recuperating from knee surgery earlier this year. I visited 'Weingut Langer' with my wife and son in August of this year. Leo Langer had unfortunately passed away, but it was a pleasure to meet Sabine, who still seems to be going strong at the ripe old age of 85! Their son Winfried now runs the business and he gave my family and I a personal tour of their facilities. I would recommend anyone to visit and try out their fabulous range of wines and schnapps. We had a dozen bottles shipped to England and it didn't last too long! Glad you are now able to see the earlier episodes of the series and I hope you enjoy them all. Regards, Deutsch Direkt!

Wow I typed this in out of boredom and to think It definately was the best programme for learning German. I used to watch it religously after taping it on my old Grundig V2000 (now there's a rare machine) Thanks so much for downloading now me and my son can enjoy them.

Hi. Glad you're able to enjoy Deutsch Direkt again. I recorded these programmes on a Ferguson Videostar, which was probably from the same era as your Grundig. In fact, i'm surprised that they transferred so well to digital! At some point I hope to add a brief 'Contents' guide to the titles, but for now i'm just happy that they're being so well received. Thank you so much for uploading. I have been waiting AGES for someone to upload these - the best German courses the BBC ever did. Deutsch Direkt was followed up by Deutsch Express and finally Ganz Spontan, though I think the follow up courses were only broadcast on radio and so were audio only.

I hadn't heard of the two follow-up courses you've mentioned, but I did watch Deutsch Plus on TV, which I know other people have uploaded to KZbin. I love the Deutsch Direkt series, because now it is almost 30 years old, it provides a historical view of German culture and customs at the time. Best wishes.

Hello Malik, thanks for your positive comments. I don't know if you read the introduction to this video, but I recorded these videos in the 1980's. I recorded other German language programmes too and I have uploaded the best of them to my channel. The ones I haven't uploaded were truly awful! 'Deutsch Direkt!' however is a gem and I hope you get a lot of pleasure from watching all twenty programmes in the series. Good luck with your studies!

I especially like the chapter about the wine company in Franken, called Staatliche Hofkeller, which involvs the wine drinking test in Franken featuring the "Quality-Wine", the "Riesling", and the "Spaetlese", and the buildup to the wine fest in Volkach, which is a suburb in the region of Franken. Learned that Andrea Wagerle was one of the "wine queens" in one of the year's fest, and probably on the last day of the festival, a crowd gathers in the evening and one wine or so is honored at the fest, and then they go sing a traditional German drinking song, "A Toast, A Toast, Good Cheer" (or "Ein Prosit, Ein Prosit, Gemeutlichkeit."), and then they finish off with a faster German polka, and then there is a fireworks finale as they do the reprise of "Ein Prosit". I also like the last chapter (Programm 20) that involves Mozart and the Salzburg Festival.

Personally I like the way the series runs from the north to the south of Germany and the difficulty level slowly increases along the way. Last year my family and I visited Das Weingut Langer and Winfried Langer gave us a guided tour of the winery, which was absolutely wonderful.We also got to meet his mother Sabine, who is now in her eighties and a lovely lady. To the best of my knowledge, Andrea Wägerle now works for a bank. This series gives a wonderful insight into the culture and customs of Germany in the '80's and I am happy to be able to share it. Kapitel 1: "Ausgebucht" - Really, this German word acts almost the same as "ausverkauft" (meaning "sold out"). "buchen" (v.) means "to book (a room)", and "das Buch" means "the book." So basically, "ausgebucht", roughly means "booked out" (that is, no more rooms or slots open), but it can mean "all booked" or "fully booked" as well as "sold out." as well.

+Charles Smith Charles - I follow your logic right up to the last sentence, where you say that 'ausgebucht' can mean 'fully booked' as well as 'sold out'. I have to tell you that I disagree with your interpretation at this point. Consider these two sentences: 1: 'Wir sind völlig ausgebucht' - 'We are fully booked' or 'We have no vacancies', and 2: 'Wir sind völlig ausverkauft' - 'We are completely sold out'. A native German speaker would never say 'Wir sind völlig ausgebucht' and mean 'We are completely sold out'. These sentences have two totally separate and distinct meanings and to transpose the two, would completely confuse a native German speaker.

Judith - Thanks for your positive comments - really appreciated. If you're watching at 3.00am, you must be hooked! Unfortunately there are no subtitles or transcripts available, but you should still be able to find a copy of the course-book on Amazon. It doesn't really follow the programmes as such, but the general grammar themes are similar and there are useful exercises to help you consolidate your learning. Have fun learning German.

Hi, All videos are set to 'Public' with restricted mode off. I have changed 1 - 4 to 'Private' and then back again. Hopefully this will help resolve the issue. If not, please let me know and I will look into it further.

No, the problem still exists, the alert on ma phone is [Video blocked on device ] and on Floating fo YT is sth like this [~UMG partner claims copyrights to this video contents...you can only play this video on YT channel, other websites will be blocked] . I made a mistake, the problem occur on video 1, 2, 3 and 19, sorry.

I have checked and the videos you have mentioned all contain copyrighted content (In this case music). Although copyright ownership has been acknowledged, the copyright holders have set viewing restrictions, meaning that these videos can't be played on some devices.
