The Direct-Shift Gearbox (DSG) transmission, developed by VW, traces its history back to the early 2000s when it was first introduced in the MK4 R32 in Europe. This transmission combines the efficiency of a manual transmission with the convenience of an automatic, DSG quickly gained popularity and became a benchmark for dual-clutch transmission technology in the automotive industry.
Today we tear apart the 6 Speed DSG Transmission out of our MK5 R32!
This Trans had problems being stuck in 2nd gear, would go into limp mode with the PRNDS lights flashing, had a loud clicking noise while idle, and had a nasty whine noise on deceleration. We had a feeling that our R32 would need a transmission, so we pulled this one out and saved it for this video! we wanted to tear apart this DSG to both see how these transmissions work and find the damage left behind!

HOW are electric cars more expensive when they don't need all this junk plus all the junk in a modern vvt, turboed, watercooled, computer controlled engine. Shirley they will end up much less expensive once 50% of vehicle production moves to electric drivetrains.

I remember taking one apart at school, to then cut some bits open, create a sort of exploded view, not really exploded view but I hope you get the point, and put it all back together, so the trans could be seen operating to teach new students about this type of transmission (We have also done a CVT and a regular auto aswell before that). I've had a VW 6 spd manual in an MK8 GTI and recently a DSG in an MK8 R. The DSG is an amazing piece of engineering and as much as I love manuals, I feel the DSG is the proper transmission for the Golf R. As an $800 USD option it's a steal.
@HeathRS

No kidding. VW didn't put enough development into the manual anyway. The DSG works so well. As much as I thought about getting a MK8 GTI manual, there's nothing wrong with my MK7.5 DSG car and so I stage 1 tuned and did the DSG tune. It's amazing what these trans can handle just by a tune. Fluid changes aren't too expensive considering. VW dumped a lot of money into development of the DSG and it shows.

Oh those 02K gearboxes, those get very unreliable with age, we had em' replaced twice on our family Skoda Octavia (for muricans, it's just a VW Golf in a liftback form) for 170k kms of ownership, and it seems that it hasn't had its original box when we bought it with 160k on the clock (might've been rolled back though, usual stuff over here). Yours probably had its diff rivet shooting through the box's case, it's one of the multitude issues with this tranny, and probably the worst one.

I have a 2013 GTI / DSG with 211,000 miles, much of it highway mileage. I'm concerned however, because nothing lasts forever. The DSG has been flawless thus far. Because much of my driving is highway, I've been doing my DSG oil changes about 60-70K miles. The fluid always looks nice and clear, only a little darker than the new VW fluid that replaces it. This GTI is the best car I've owned, hoping it will see 300,000 miles someday.

Yes, my engine is completely stock. It's been nearly flawless. The OEM water pump began to leak after I received an early recall notice, so I had it replaced. Since then I replaced the coil packs after two failed. Outside of oil changes and spark plugs, I didn't replace anything until the 190,000 mile mark when my idle was becoming noticeably rough. I had received a notice from VW that my GTI's intake manifold was likely faulty, but my mileage was beyond what they covered. So I chose to replace the intake when I did a valve cleaning and replaced the fuel injectors as well. With a new intake, clean valves and new injectors the car idles like new once again. As a precautionary measure, I have an appointment to have the timing chain, tensioner and guides replaced later this month. I'm letting VW complete this task which will be the first time they've seen the car since my early water pump replacement. @@BLACKRACERONE

its a very good transmision, here you can see that somebody didint make oil changes and a bearing goes missing, normal thing if you dont change oil in 50/60k km, in europe you can get rebuilt set for this trans.

How does the weight of a DSG compare with a similar conventional auto box?
@NJRoadfan

The first DSG equipped car in the US was the 2004 New Beetle TDI. Those early boxes had some really odd behavior, particularly on cold days. I recall my 06 GLI would sometime lurch (!) on start on cold mornings. They seemed to have ironed out most of the problems with the S-Tronic box that is in my 18 A4, except for servicing costs. I thought VW was going to "dry clutch" DSGs that used much less fluid. Guess that didn't pan out.

They used dry clutch DSGs on some of the lower-end cars in the rest of the world. The 1.4 TSI twin charged engine for example I think could be had with a 7-speed dry DSG. That whole combo was horrifically unreliable, so yeah, that didn't pan out
@davidc-l9174
@davidc-l9174 Жыл бұрын
@@tally5k339 The Jetta Hybrid had a dry clutch 7-speed DSG, too. I don't think it was quite as problematic as other applications of the same transmission, likely because it didn't need to slip the clutch to get moving in most situations since it almost always started in electric only mode.

Technically, the first U.S. car with a DSG was the 2003 Audi TT 3.2, but the 2004 New Beetle TDI was the first VW in the U.S. with the DSG.

My mom has an 2015 A3 1.4 TSI hatchback, which she got new and has been with it since, back in Brazil. This model has the DQ200 transmission (dry clutch DSG), and it is pretty amazing, but it indeed has that infamous unrealiabiity history due to being 'fragile'. This year the trans failed all of a sudden, then she took it to Audi and they covered the services for its replacement, given she did all the services regularly there. It took them 2 months to repair it (mostly due to having to wait for parts to come) and the bill was around 8k USD (rough convertion to the 40k BRL bill), which is nuts considering the car is estimated at around 75k BRL, so more than half the value of it.... Had Audi not covered the repair, it would certainly be scrapped. Apart from that, the car still looks and runs great tho.

The present 1.5 litre Renault Scenic Mk4 7 speed dual clutch automatic gearbox has two dry clutches which means the gearbox oil remains much cleaner for much longer. So far I have not ben able to find a garage to change my 1.5 litre Renault Scenic 7speed dual clutch gearbox oil. I do not trust any dealer garage because after over 50 years of driving I have had to conclude that all the dealer networks are interested in is selling you a new car. I have no doubts that they would be strongly tempted to sabotage the car you already have. I now have 30.000 miles on the clock and I am still trying to find some decent garage or mechanic to change it for me!.

I’ve had an MkV Golf 1.9TDi with one of these and although, I had to spend just over £600 on it to replace the flywheel or the clutch(?) if I remember right, it was the gearbox that changed my view on auto gearboxes. I’ve had various Mercedes (SL, 190E, C/E 4/6 cylinders) and some awful Subarus (Outback/Impreza) with auto gearboxes, but no other gearbox came close to the speed, convenience and comfort of this. I still toy with the idea of getting either an auto GTI or an A3 with one of these.

DSG is honestly really reliable, even the mech units have become alot better with time, rarely see any issues with them at the shop anymore compared to what it used to be like. Recently had a freak outlier DSG in a brand new Caddy (not even delivered yet) with a bad clutch pack but thats about it. otherwise if we ever have DSG issues at the shop it is usually on the smaller ones with the dry clutch packs or something older coming in to just diagnos it.

hello sir, I've got a 7 speed dry clutch DSG coupled to a 1.0 TSI engine (car is from 2017). The last 6 months I noticed the car is not as smooth as it once was when driving a low speeds, especially when it's slipping the clutch in 2nd gear at very low speeds, the whole thing doesn't seem to be happy and there is a slight (slight for now) noise coming from what I think is the gearbox. Should I get this thing checked (I always go to the main dealer for regular servicing)? At first I thought maybe the clutch or dual mass flywheel (or both) need replacing but now that I see ball bearings being destroyed in the gearbox I'm getting more worried. I've got 65k miles on the clock. Any advice? Thanks in advance. The car drives absolutely fine otherwise, it's just at low speeds. Also it can be very clunky on the downshift from 3rd to 2nd and from 2nd into first (it kind of depends how hard you're decelerating). Thanks!
@soapmcsoapface1787
@soapmcsoapface1787 Жыл бұрын
@@SlosII for the driveability and clunky gear changes there is a procedure from factory that your dealer should be able to find. The dry clutch DSGs can also be a little clunky when cold because they do intentionally slip the clutches when getting going from standing when they are cold to heat up the clutches faster. As for the noise its hard to really say much without checking it since alot of stuff can make noise, but bearing issues are really uncommon, never had a DSG with bearing issues that i can remember. As a tech i would say advise with your local shop and try and detail it as much as possible for them. Stuff like when/how it happens so like is it when the car is cold or up to temp, outside temp, weather conditions, road conditions in general, certain maneuvers. Basically anything you can think of to narrow it down. Or even have a tech ride along and show what happens can be a good thing.

11:54 is there a possibility this parking pawl could fail due to low transmission fluid. And would doing a oil service fix this problem. As i suspect this part failed due to low dsg oil on my vehicle im using bcoz of low oil it is now making it harder for the part to disengage. My vehicle can go into D but move forward a slight inch then locks. (I have no faults on box only says low transmission fluid) .
