Stalin Avenue - Film of the East German Documentary series "Das Fenster" (1991)

This film focuses on the KarlMarxAvenue, better known by its former name Stalin Avenue. The homogeneous architecture of the street is unique in Europe. In 1952, construction work began. Amidst the ruins of Berlin "palaces for the working class" were built, the "first socialist avenue in Germany".
In the first years of the GDR, Stalin Avenue was the showcase meant to demonstrate the power and effectiveness of the socialist system. Beyond the cultural aspects of the street, a film about Stalin Avenue has to include the failings of the socialist experiment as well. Built during the era of Nation Building, this street is connected with historical events like the rebellion on the 17th of June 1953, in which the construction workers played an important role, the sudden disappearance of the Stalin monument, the
demonstrations on the 1st of May and the parades during the era of Honecker.
This is a film about the claims of socialism and the wrong ways to realize it. Its subjective description of today's situation combines the views of the
inhabitants, the "Trümmerfrauen" and the former construction workers.

Ich war letztes Jahr in Berlin und habe mir einen ganzen Tag genommen um mir die Stalinalee zu betrachten und mit den Leuten zu sprechen die dort Wohnen, Arbeiten, Leben, hauptsächlich aber nur mit den älteren die noch in der DDR gewohnt hatten. Es war eine sehr schone Zeit! Nun um mehr verfeinert durch diese wundervolle Doku

Als (BRD-Bürger von Geburt an) mit großem Interesse an Architektur habe mich ehrlich sehr gefreut als ich hörte,, dass die Gebäude Karl-Marx- Allee (früher Stalin Allee) unter Denkmalschutz gestellt wurden.

Ein schöner Film-Essay, in dem die am Aufbau der Stalinallee (heute: Karl-Marx-Allee) Beteiligten zu Wort kommen. Es ist eher keine Dokumentation. Die Aussage einer Architektin, die den Straßenzug mit der Prachtstraße von Babylon vergleicht, ist bemerkenswert. Hier wurde der Aufbruch in eine neue Epoche inszeniert. Unbedingt sehenswert!
