Dev Patel 'Tripled Down' On Indian Heritage In 'Monkey Man'

"It's one big panic attack waiting to happen!" Dev Patel dishes on his directorial debut "Monkey Man," an action-packed thriller that combines inspiration from Indian mythology and Bruce Lee martial art movies. Dev shares how he "tripled down" on his Indian heritage for the film, and dishes on the many hurdles he faced directing his first movie, including putting a nail into his hand, having to film on his phone after breaking the camera, and shooting during the pandemic. This is why representation and diversity of all kinds matters so much! Look at the sudden rise of Asian actors in non Asian films and also Asian actors in “regular” roles on tv, films and streaming. Trustingly someday soon we won’t have to water things down for audiences in order for them to consider watching it. Btw the trailer was totally giving Slumdog and John Wick Vibes. I disliked Slumdog (as did many Indians) since it was a very western gaze and amplified the stereotypes about India. 7:37 minutes " there was a time in my life when I was ashamed of Indian part of my heritage"-I know as a kid it can be hard when you are bullied and face racism but as an adult, his parents should have given him the confidence to be his authentic self unapologetically.
