Hurricane Helene has devastated my town and brought me an unexpected and very sad farewell. While my bookstore will likely not continue, many other businesses and residents in Marshall hope to rebuild. Support the town through local Gofundmes and organizations:
This will be distributed to all the businesses downtown through the Downtown Marshall Association.

This is a Gofundme to help the employees of restaurants etc. who rely on tips. We love them and know that tip-based workers don't usually have a lot of financial resources stored up.

Don't put yourself down! Writers are the people who imagine different futures; their gift is one of leadership, by being able to give people hope. It also means you are gifted with communication skills, something your community is going to need a lot of from now on as it rebuilds. You are an important link for them to the wider world. We are all in this together on planet Earth when it comes to dealing with the climate emergency.

What a devastating experience. My county suffered a large wildfire a couple years ago, and there were about 1,000 homes that have burnt to the ground, and in some cases entire neighborhoods demolished. It's a terrible trauma, and the only thing that helps (assuming anything helps at all) is helping each other out. What a wonderful town of people you have.

It is 100% okay if you need or want to take a break from YT. You may not have it as bad as others, but you've still been through something traumatic. You need time to breathe and gather yourself. Breakdowns and crying sessions are normal in your situation. Take things one day at a time; if you need to step away or pull back from something for a little while, that's perfectly fine. Try not to be hard on yourself for anything, certainly not for how you feel.

It's the creatives who can tell the stories and preserve history with their art. It's the creatives who inspire and uplift others in despair. We all come into this world with gifts. Not everyone is born to hold a shovel or build things, just like not everyone is a visionary or artist. Some people are going to do the very physica work of clean-up. Some people are there to feed them. Some people are there to provide comfort and support and healing. All of it happens in different stages and requires different skills. For people thinking that this hurricane was far away and they weren't affected by it, you have just shared your very personal story. I can't imagine that anyone listening to you could get through this without feeling a deeper sense of empathy and connection to a community we're not a part of. When you felt helpless and though you couldn't do anything to contribute, you made this heartfelt video. That IS doing something and contributing. ♥

"Everything was river." I know that feeling, especially that sound of unstoppable water. It puts the entire universe in a whole new perspective. Thank God you're all right. Oh, Lidiya, your description of your town right now brings me back to our local disasters (huge flood in '82, major earthquake in '89, CZU lightning complex in 2000, and big atmospheric river wind and rain storms every 5-10 years). I'm in the Santa Cruz mountains in California, and every single disaster brings out the best in our community. We look after our neighbors. We roll up our sleeves to clear away debris. We pitch in to help people rebuild, and we work together to try to mitigate future disasters with the information we learned from past ones. You are helping by publicizing what is going on in your town. You might be able to help in other ways with the skills you have. Fundraisers might need help with publicity, displaced animals might need care, someone might need a place to park a trailer while they sort out the basics on their destroyed homes. You might be able to listen to people tell their stories, which can be very healing. These disasters are horrible, but they can bring communities together and make them stronger (as well as improving drainage and infrastructure for next time so that it can better withstand another event of this magnitude).

I do wish I could help some displaced animals but I already have too many formerly displaced animals that have now been permanently placed with me, haha. I am so sorry for what you and your lovely town is going through. I teared up listening to this video, and I hope things begin to look up soon for everyone. I understand deeply the kind of helplessness or powerlessness you spoke of as a writer during a natural disaster. Having cerebral palsy and living in Louisiana, I've gone through the major hurricanes as well, and I've always felt that I could not be "enough": not resilient enough, not strong enough, not mobile enough, not helpful enough. But your books and stories bring hope to people. They allow for solace in what could be the darkest times. The words you have worked so hard on are now a light for someone else to get through their day. And bringing awareness in this video is so needed as well. I was so sad to hear about your beloved bookstore, but I am glad to hear that you, your family, and your bookstore family are safe. Please take all the time you need to recoup, and we will be here. Your description of the river brought to mind the videos I saw of the Nolichucky River in Erwin, where I used to live. The massive amount of water, and the speed at which it traveled . . . my mind still cannot comprehend what I saw. And that was from a video. I can only imagine what it was like in person. I imagine you could feel the vibration through the ground. For people who aren't familiar with the area, it is difficult to comprehend how bad the situation was/is. The scope and magnitude of it all. To most people, those videos of the Nolichucky River wouldn't mean much, because they don't know what it normally looks like. They might see videos of flood water in Elizabethton TN and Henderson NC without realizing that these places are 100 miles apart, and that nearly everything in between was equally devastated. They don't understand the terrain, how many homes only have only one way in or out, and how one little bridge being destroyed can leave dozens of families stranded in a remote location. And many, many bridges and roads have been destroyed. This is why storytellers are important. People need to hear the stories to understand the impact. They may not understand the significance of a washed out road, but they will understand heartbreak. I know it was painful to share your heartbreak with us, but I also know it will bring much-needed support to your community. Your voice matters. I am sending so much love and a great big hug from afar.

You will tell this story for the rest of your life. It’s part of our collective responsibility. As someone who rebuilt after Katrina, which also intensified and changed all expectations. Much love, it’s a long haul.

I understand feeling useless in times of great peril and recovery, but as a creative the work we do is what feeds the souls of those people after a long day of breaking their backs from labor. That’s your invaluable skill. They need you just as much as you need them.

I am so sorry. I live on the coast of Ga and while my town was impacted we fared far better than many places around us. It is such a strange combination of gratitude and heartbreak. I guess what I am trying to say is, in a small way, I understand and I am so sorry. I will be hoping, praying and believing that there are better things around the bend for you and yours. I will also be donating and posting links so that others can do the same.

Thank you so much. Yes, I understand...there can be a lot of survivor guilt type feelings when there's a brush with disaster. And the woman who lives near the bookstore--she's such a sweet person--whose house was in the flood zone was shamed by someone online because "some people have it worse", which...doesn't help!!
