This week I share my experience creating a black and white 35mm film developer using BEER as the the developer substrate, and I show you how easy it is to develop black and white film at home!
//
I’ve developed a lot of black and white film but until entering this photo competition years ago, I had never used BEER as a developer! In this video I take you through what you need to make your own beerenol developer, explain the process, and reflect on the end result. Stay tuned as there is a small giveaway at the end too!
If you got anything of value out of this video, please consider giving it a like, share, comment, and subscribe - it goes a really long way in helping me to create more of these.
Your support means a lot! If you found this video helpful, please give it a thumbs up, leave your thoughts in the comments, and don't forget to subscribe for more content on filmmaking, camera operating, and film photography. I love talking about anything film, so if you have any suggestions for the next videos, please leave them in the comments!

Love this one Al! Took me back to high school dark room photo lab days - which defo would have been more fun with beer (and also thanks for the cameo ✌🏻) Really love your photos too x

To be honest, I'm in love with the print you've made. I like the photograph very much, composition is amazing and grain turned out really cool. I would love to hang the print somewhere in my house:) Great work man!

Really good job man! Beautiful balance of great frames, both in the stills you shot and nicely lit interview frames, an honest account of what you went through and reasoning behind it all. Might have to crack a beer and give it another watch!

I love this guy's content. Beautifully shot. I have a question- How far can you deviate from this recipe and what results can you expect if you do?
@alex-botton
@alex-botton 10 күн бұрын
@@Bignamestar this recipe is a guide - I wouldn’t deviate too far as developing film is basic chemistry + limiting your variables! But you could always make a weaker developer and dev for longer!

@@alex-botton Ok thank you. I may have missed it in your video but is it something in the beer or would carbonated water work?
@alex-botton
@alex-botton 9 күн бұрын
@@Bignamestar from my knowledge it needs to be something with an acidity to it, like instant coffee or beer. But truth is I don’t really know!

Nice one Alex! I'm wondering why beer chemically works instead of any other liquid though?? Could you develop using a coke or cider or margarita? hah
@alex-botton
@alex-botton Күн бұрын
@@bohdandoval9621 thanks Bohdan! Appreciate it bro. Honestly I’m not sure I need to do some research but it’s something to do with the pH levels - the ash and vid C do most of the work so you probably could use another substrate of some kind. try it and let me know! 😉

Using a developer which includes some beer is ancient news. The idea and a few formulas have been around for 60 years to my knowledge, probably longer. Now if you want something to make a YT video about, drink the beer, then use the resulting piss to developer your film, if you can.
@alex-botton
@alex-botton 10 күн бұрын
@@randallstewart1224 thanks for the comment! Yes it’s a tried and true recipe, I’m definitely not claiming to have invented it. I’ll leave you to make the second hand beer developer though 😂
