This is the advice to listen to. The problem is KZbin is full of kids who worked 2 or 3 years at a FAANG and then quit to become KZbinrs. No matter of how good they may have been 2-3 years is very little experience… this is very visible in the kind of videos they produce saying programming is dead… no more jobs for developers, etc

Idk what you're seeing but I've seen a lot of youtubers saying the opposite. I'm not trying to start an argument here cause I'm sure it's probably the algorithm at play. I just feel like there should be a lot of careful consideration in a lot of these videos, thankfully what I've seen is mostly "2023 is a bad year, but things are looking better" "ai will not be replacing programmers, but taking advantage of it will be the best move for new programmers" and all of that

A trend I’ve noticed for a while now: so called “junior” roles, where they expect you to know the equivalent of a SENIOR programmer (and sometimes require years of experience on top of that), yet the pay is really low. Employers are doing that because they know very well for 1 opening there are hundreds of qualified applicants.

Stef also mentioned that employers are having trouble finding qualified people. Well, that's because they're *ridiculously* picky. Doesn't matter if you have 20 years experience and have used a dozen languages professionally, if you don't have 2 years of PHP on your resume, they don't even want to talk to you. It's no wonder so many people (not me) lie on their resumes.

So the reality is at a time when 250,000 STEM workers were laid off, the industry requested 400,000 H-1b visas. Most of those H-1b visas (75%) were for IT related positions. And most were for fresher (right out of college) applicants. So where did all the starting jobs go, they went to people coming in an H-1b visa. I will give the reasons for this in a follow-up. But keep in mind, in past recessions the number of H-1b requests fell, but looking closely, they fell more in the 2001 recession, and far less in the 2008 recession. And in this tech recession they greatly exceeded supply.
@jakeleone8944
@jakeleone8944 Жыл бұрын
The reason why H-1b requests have increased isn't because of skills, it is because H-1b workers are stuck at their job, waiting for Green Card. The government fosters a form of discrimination against local STEM workers, that starts by giving industry a 15% discount to hire a foreign student for 27 months, over a local student worker. During that time period, the student (often fully graduated, but taking some classes to comply with the OPT visa), applies for an H-1b visa. Once on the H-1b visa, the student is shielded from local competition (DOJ vs Facebook 2020 & DOJ vs Apple 2023) while trying to get a Green Card, via fraudulent methods (and it works until they are audited, which rarely happens). The foreign worker, even with skills that admitted by Facebook to be completely redundant in the U.S. marketplace, succeeds because Facebook and Apple have been shown to completely disregard the applications of better qualified local applicants, applying to the same or similar job. This is all documented at the USDOJ website.
@jakeleone8944
@jakeleone8944 Жыл бұрын
Now we have to realize, you can lie all you want to the press and public, but you can't lie to DOJ investigators, and it is in DOJ vs Facebook that we learn the truth. Foreign tech workers are being shielded from better qualified local competition, because foreign workers exist in an indentured state. A state preferred by their managers, often from the same country. Managers that actively discriminate against local applicants, because they have the 13th amendment right to leave their job at any time. A foreign worker who does this, loses their Green Card application, or their H-1b visa and have to return to abject poverty.
@jakeleone8944
@jakeleone8944 Жыл бұрын
You guys need to get vocal about this discrimination, or it will never change. Big immigration legal lobbying groups opposed changes that would have made it easier for foreign workers to get Green Card and employers assisted them in this. Allocatoing H-1b visas, based upon salary was therefore nixed by the Biden administration, because it hurts the bottom line of immigration legal groups, which need that huge Green Card and H-1b backlog as part of their yearly repeat business.
@jakeleone8944
@jakeleone8944 Жыл бұрын
What we need is a national apprenticeship. This would end the discrimination caused the foreign student OPT worker discount. It would extend the discount to all students and the unemployed. Putting local workers on the same footing as foreign students for tech jobs. Companies are perfectly willing to sponsor 400,000 H-1b visas, for freshers right out of college but from another country. Every tech job requires some training, but the only jobs that get publicly advertised are the ones that pay beginning salaries for Senior skills. Come on, it's a big scam. Foreign managers at these companies build up their fiefdoms (a term actully used by a Facebook employee) with people from their home country. That is the reason for the huge H-1b demand, it has grown over the years only because foreign workers (stuck at their job) became managers at these companies and institutionalized the discrimination documented publicly in DOJ vs Facebook 2020 and in DOJ vs Apple 2023.

Totally agree regarding being a "creator" vs an "implementer". I once had a high paying and promising career in networking and security, but realised I was becoming just another advanced "monkey" that pushes buttons to make things work - exactly how you put it. After a little while out I'm finally looking to get back into the workplace, and I've chosen the Front End Web Dev path as it's the perfect combination of technical and creativness that I need.

Hey, i got an interesting perspective for you, people on youtube complaining about there are no jobs for devs are thinking about all the cushy 200k+ salaries in silicon valley, sure tons of people got fired from FAANG and there is an overflow of talent in those markets, but thats just one specific market for programmers.. here in Tokyo according to indeed there are over 5000 open positions for python programmers and over 20000 open positions for Ruby on rails programmers. there is A LOT OF industry using automation in Japan that needs programmers. one of the big reasons is programming was never glamorized like it was in the united states, the rich programmer silicon valley type image DOESNT EXIST here, its just another job. the salaries are pretty low but even without experience you can get a job here. so its not a decrease in programming jobs or tech jobs, its just a specific niche of programming jobs in a specific location that is having those issues.

I'm a public school teacher learning programming (self-taught) so that I can use the skills to build educational web apps for my students. But if there are people or companies that need my service in the future, that's a bonus. Quitting my job as a teacher to become a full time web developer in my country is just not worth it. The average junior and mid web developers here are paid less than a public school teacher. There are local web developers who are paid high salary, but usually they are working for big foreign companies.

Are full stack developers more in demand than front end developers in this job market?
@Matt-m3y-r4u

Depends on the location I guess. There’s definitely a growing demand for “Jack of all trades” or full stack programmers in disguise. Many employers want less people to do more.

It has always been and will always be better to be full stack.

would you say learning web design is easier to learn and work as a freelancer then web development.
@StefanMischook
@StefanMischook Жыл бұрын
Web design is easier to learn but the job opportunities are far greater when you can do even low level development. So learn just a touch of full stack, and you will be happy that you did.

but when you start from Zero and you want to become a freelancer. Then web design would be easier and faster to learn and to start earning money as a freelancer right? Or is that difficult to say ? :D @@StefanMischook

Yes! Keep yourself in shape. If you do not, becoming overweight becomes an occupational hazard. Especially if you spend a lot of time in front of a screen. Then you feel crappie! Not fun. Yes, the voice of experience. Lol

Depends in the specialization. Developer demand is still strong but process management is being automated ... that's where the job losses are.
