I think the problem nowadays is that companies are trying to get these games out too fast, focused on looks and money. Back then, it wasn't "let's make it look really good, and people will eat out of our hands." In NFS's case, it was about the cars and handling, the experience, and the fun. The first game struck me as a playable car magazine. Now it's the new maps, the looks, the details, new handling, things like that. There's no passion in the games cause it's a money grab in extreme time constraints

The difference back then it was a lot more personal, in a typical game there was a small team with little restrictions or budgeting. Now everything needs 300 staff members, 499 million in budgeting and any decisions need to be argued by 20 Karens to make sure it’s not offensive and then presented to a board to make sure they won’t be loosing a nickel in profit because they really need a new yacht. That and back in the day all the tech stuff was pretty brutal to work with, either you master it or you do not touch it, like actually working on expensive cars, there was no slacking like today with KZbin tutorials and half assed degrees or affirmative action.

yes and no because NFS has a year based release since forever. Making good games is harder on modern days, the standards are too high, if EA release a game that is just modern high stakes people would complain a lot because it looks dated.

Now that's a point that I haven't seen being spoke by anyone else - the old school devs for these games were, to an extent, car enthusiasts themselves. It takes not only research about car culture and what's trending to make a game sucessful and memorable, but passion itself. Things like racing a Mercedes SLK or Porsche 356 on mountain roads don't sound exciting or fun for a videogame anymore for a general audience, that has been taken overby 1000 HP drift supras and Bugattis on Rocket Bunny bodykits. But those oldschool guys made it feel just great and challenging. Last time we felt anything similar to that was on the last NFSHP.

No, the last one with that theme was Porsche Unleashed and Hot Pursuit 2, sadly EA put EA Canada (the developers of the 90s NFS) to create only sport games while Black Box turned into the developer of NFS.

Have you not seen classic NFS videos on YT? There are many of us who've been saying this. One of the main points that made the first six titles so great was that the people working on these games genuinely loved cars, and that passion shows itself throughout the game, in the design, the car showcases and all the little details that only car enthusiasts would notice. Just watch the High Stakes BMW M5 showcase video and tell me it doesn't make you emotional. NFS lost this flair after 2002.

the modern devs are not at fault here. racing games are out of passion / dead because "car culture" (or whatever you could call it) is dead in general. there is no new blood. ask yourself, when were the last time you seen a new car that revolutionised the market? exactly. 90s/00s were full of mosters that quickly aquired legendary status... and even if you look at that time it was mostly carried by japanese - RX-7, EVO, Skyline, WRX etc... - it was all new models/series that revolutionised motorsport or at least had new look. last time i got exited about a new car was at the time of prostreet - that were Nissan GTR and Pagani Zonda. everything esle after that is self-repetition. (to me, at least). i mean, literally, it's 20 years passed and you still drive the same cars in these games, exept one or two. of course, there are new models, but they are all sit on their legacy. all modern lambos are basically murcielagos on crack. and everything else is the same. there's nothing new on the market that is "new"-new... and most popular car is tesla... so the hope is literally gone.

12:02 one explanation, less polygons. One of the most time consuming parts of making a game is making models and assets. As technology advanced, you could have more polygons in a game, which made games better looking, but also exponentially increased the time it took to develop a game. They worked faster back then because the limits of computers of the time prevented them from having to work with the insane level of detail were now used to

I think something that can be very important to the development of a racing game is the quality of the team and them being able to communicate and get things done together, my example being Forza Horizon 5. Forza Horizon 5s live service structure and monthly updates allowed us to this in action. Until about update 19, FH5 still had the creative director from the original Horizon game, and a lot of OG crew. Around that time, the community complained about tons of recycled content from FH4 and features being outdated (like photo mode). Then around the time of update 19, some of the original developers of Forza Horizon left. After that happened, the photo mode was finally upgraded, Eventlab was beefed up, a deal with Stellantis and Fiat was finally agreed upon, bringing back Alfa Romeo and Lancia and Fiat, the developers finally started taking hints from modders on how to improve the game, and random stupid bugs were finally being dealt with. Obviously FH5 still has an ass load of problems, but as soon as the development team was better focused and coordinated due to no longe having to deal with uncooperative members, Forza Horizon 5 was finally able to start crawling it’s way out of hell. I suspect there’s a similar issue with other racing games where the team isn’t quite where it needs to be in terms of group coordination. Thanks for coming to my stupid FH5 themed TED talk

12:50 genrally it's gotten much more complicated purely due to scale. It's harder to cram functionality into an engine that doesn't fundamentally support it than it is to rebuild an engine surrounding the games mechanics. Game developers back in the day had much more influence on the underlying coding of an engine, similiar to CGI, but nowadays both industries rely a lot on massive libraries of pre-determined presets and tools. It isn't a necessary for modern game devs to also simultaneously be engine/ tech devs like before, so they can't shape a game around their vision as easily. And not mentioning the other issues surrounding creative freedom and crunch as well.

Met NFS franchise with the first Hot Pursuit on PS1. Although I was captivated by Underground 2 when I met it on PC for the first time. For both games, I did never mind graphics that much, so what I think it's WAY MORE important for me on a video game... is the physics!

12:58 on a technical level, yes. Exponentially bigger polygon counts, more calculations, and Unbound is in the age of ray tracing, which means individual rays of light. Not only that, I believe the weird handling NFS games have nowadays is because of that complexity. They’re trying to make a drift friendly handling model, but it’s so over complex that it ends up falling flat on its face

I have played Need For Speed High Stakes for ps1 throughout my life, and currently, I'm attempting to complete the PC version. Graphically, the PC version of the game is stunning. However, I have some reservations about the tournaments. In the PlayStation 1 version, you play two tournaments for each car class, and with every new class, a new road is added. In contrast, the PC version makes all the roads available from the beginning, and you simply play 10 tournaments with the same cars. I encountered a similar issue with Porsche Unleashed on PC. The ERA concept on the PlayStation 1 is superior. On PS1, the songs, the menu theme, and the cars are all era-based. When you change the era, it feels like an entirely new game each time, even the menu undergoes changes. Nostalgia hit me hard as I experienced this.

HFS High Stakes was a really good purchase back in the day. While I played the Playstation 1 version of it, it was damn fun and very challenging. Having to go through tournaments trying not to damage your car and winning races meant something, and that was consistency and knowing how to play. The fact that you can't restart the race and have to play well throughout the tournament made this even more important. Making an error in endgame possibly meant restartiing the whole tounament if too many mistakes were made. The endurance races were tough, and I loved the last ones as they were a real test.

So far I had been revisit this game and NFS II SE like two years ago and the memories have gotten back to me. Haven't tried out NFS III HP but will gladly hoping to try some time and pissed off that I used to hear people says play this game only as it has tracks from the third NFS game but for me I still like this game and even the third one besides so many NFS games in later years...

In discussions with the engine in question, EA really needs to put more funding and resources into overhauling frostbite completely so it can be more reliable and very well flexible upon usage. Mass Effect, Anthem, and Need for Speed are struggling especially Battlefield, the very game the engine was built for with features that of fully interactive destructible environment and housing many players in a big enough map, with this undercooked engine that should’ve been main priority after transitioning it as the proprietary engine. It’s impossible to swap engines in the middle of development as that eats more time and resources to relearn and redo everything from ground up.

Where are bands like Pierce The Veil and Sum 41? Sure electronic music is cool but no way it'll fit racing genre better than rock and metal sub genres. And no announcers! Even Grid had announcers. I have hopes for TDU SC but Iam already adding nostalgia hype to it :) Ther will never be any real crash physics like ProStreet or GRID, car makers just wont allow that, can put as many disclaimers on startup as you want. They could however implement some basic roll and spin mechanics when hitting stuff instead of stopping a fast car dead on a wall like nothing happens. Going thru stone walls and small trees like in FHorizon or these " explosing guardrails in Unbound without any penalty is just dumb.

Of course anyone under this video still likes car, but barely anyone turn the head on your car even if it's a really cool one, like a high performance vehicle.
