Let me making some theory, You're the prisoner who being punished by the gods, dragged you down to hell. But god thinks, rather makes you suffer, let it demon become your enemy. The dagger implant inside you as you begin, you die by skulls. You being reset, you learn first step, any mistakes and dies, learning watches your step. Anytime you face demon, your humanity turn into insanity, you're being lost. You become demon by yourself, it's neverending nightmare, you being fighting with demon inside arena while you suffering, dying and can't run away. God sees there's some unworthy but at least, it enjoyable.

Not a bad interpretation. Although depending on who you really define the Gods. No matter the sins of the "Prisoner". It sounds as if the Gods are the creator themselves for the Devil Daggers realm instead of an entirely different entity. Unless they're a false Gods who are corrupt or are actually the Devil themselves.

One of my friends tried to start an urban legend about Devil Daggers back in the day when it came out and I thought it was funny: "The scores uploaded are monitored by the FBI and whoever breaks the max score limit is abducted and made to serve them." We never believed him, but it was kinda nostalgic because it reminded me of Polybius a little bit.
