You could not possibly be more wrong about Spiral. Spiral is arguably the best gun in the entire game regardless of whether you're using gunslinger or not. It is not even CLOSE to useless without gunslinger.

Awesome retrospective. I can't believe I missed this video. Devil May Cry 3 is my favorite in the series.

Fun fact: Just in case you didn't know, The person who designed Dante and vergil's Devil trigger forms in DMC 3 was kazuma kaneko, the same one who designed most of the demons from the shin megami tensei and persona series.

Also I have one more thing to say, when you listen to the lyrics of taste the blood(devil may cry 3’s main battle theme) it’s almost like Dante himself is shaming the player for being bad at the game.

I'm surprised to see someone criticize the game alot more than usual. I do agree with most of your critiques though. Dmc3 is a great game but it does have a no. Of annoying parts to it. It's still my second favorite behind five, and respect it a great deal.

Some DMC content on KZbin is always appreciated, thank you for the work. You had a lot of criticisms toward the enemy and boss design. I don't completely disagree but I would like to give some thoughts on the topic. Having played DMC 5 for over 200 hours, which is the most I've played a game out of the series, I can't help but feel that fights in DMC 3 are more engaging. I've been thinking about why that may be and I'm still not entirely sure, but there is one thing I've found for myself for certain. DMC 5's enemies are less bad, but they're also less good. A lot of players find them good because they're inoffensive. They make nice punching bags. There are no Dullahans with their stupid spinny shields, no Fallen no-clipping through the environment, no fucking Enigmas pew pewing your face from a meter away as you try to get closer. The most annoying DMC 5's enemies ever get are probably Furies and Hell Judeccas, but even then the bullshit levels are not comparable. They're less annoying. Less frustrating. Like a said - less bad. I also find them less good. By being so vanilla, I feel I like DMC 5's enemies don't ask all that much of me as a player. They often prefer to stand around. They have more moves but they're often meanderingly slow and can be avoided by stepping to the side. The arenas are more spacious than ever and the gravity is stupidly low so evasion is never a problem. If the hit does connect, chances are you've accidentally parried it with how big the parry windows are. When they finally do decide to do something interesting, e.g. Angelos squad formation, it's once again, so meandering and slow that by the time they're finished you have already killed half of them if not all. Sometimes demons do their own mini power-up(e.g. Empusa queen, Nobodies)and, especially if you're on DMD, you are left with an enemy whose HP is so high, all the other enemies are already dead at this point and the fight becomes an exercise in patience unless you use your most hard-hitting moves three times in a row. Exciting. Now, having said that, DMC 5's enemies do occasionally pose a threat and get you, but the way that happens is often frustrating. I don't often hear people talking about this, but here it is - it's kinda hard to be aware of 10 or so mostly grey enemies on a grey background and a grey floor. Often without distinct sound cues that an attack is coming. Most enemies do have those sound cues and you can hear them when one on one, but encounters are most often a group ordeal. I'm not going to pretend that I don't notice that Behemoth in the corner charging at me. It's big, it's yelling and it demands attention. What's harder to see though, is that one Hell Caina also charging at you somewhere to the side while all of this is happening. DMC 3's demons, at least in my experience, are often the opposite of that. The arenas are mostly tight and the game's gravity is high. Demons have a better chance of getting me and avoiding them is not so trivial. I need to be more aware at all times. Their designs are easily identifiable. 7 hells are color-coded, the other demons also differ in color and shape. Chess pieces are all grey but vary greatly in shape. They don't have all that many moves but they all pack a punch and have an easier time reaching you. At the same time, they're well telegraphed with both anticipation animations as well as great sound cues. You can hear Lusts or Soul Eaters charging at you even if they're not on screen. Wrath moans when present and lets out a shriek if it decides to blow up. Sloths yell before teleporting. Blood-goyles spin around with a distinct sound before flying at you. Bishops chant a spell before firing a fireball. Enigmas charging up and firing their shots has quite a loud sound cue as well. Etc. At a very basic level - hitting and killing demons feels impactful. 7 hells let out a ton of sand when hit and dying. Blood-goyles bleed. Chessmen explode like a rock that fell from high up. The Fallen get blown up with a burst of light. Enigmas lose all of their limbs. Arachnes turn into a blobby mess. I've ragged on DMC 5 a bit here, but the things I talked about seem more like a change in the series's focus rather than actual faults. DMC 5's overall design lends itself more toward free-flowing stylish play, where most of the fun comes from the creative use of the tools at your disposal. DMC 3 has that as well but I do feel like it's closer to the original Devil May Cry (2001) in terms of being more arcadey and more willing to challenge the player more with tough encounters.

Excellent review, though I'm going to hard disagree about Spiral being useless outside of Gunslinger. Also, Royal Guard also has a tonne of depth. You can stack its perfect block/release frames with the jump or dodge roll i-frames, it also helps with your melee combos because it can cancel many animations. Speaking of Spiral, it is arguably just as effective with RG because you can guard-cancel Spiral's recoil to the point where its DPS skyrockets because it basically acts like a semi-auto rifle. Even outside of Royal Guard, Spiral's recoil can be cancelled by switching to E&I, firing once, and then switch back to Spiral. With the right timing, its DPS also jumps, but not to the level of with Royal Guard. Spiral on its own deals with Soul Eaters really well and especially the Bloodgoyles. Additionally, you're going to *really* hate DMD. If you get full S ranks across the board in a mission, you actually can attain the SS rank for that mission. In other difficulties, you can take little damage and still get that S rank for damage. In DMD that's a no-go. ANY damage you take will have you lose the S rank for damage. So SS-ranking DMD is like a harder equivalent for S-ranking HaH in the sequels. Cerberus in Very Hard and DMD is like another beast. Yes, he has the same attacks, but he executes them way faster compared to on lower difficulties. And tbh the Hell Vanguard belongs more in the regular enemies group, since it features as a regular enemy in several encounters. Regarding taking out the Fallen with Dante, there are a couple of good strats, one being Trickster + Agni and Rudra's Aerial Cross, one of the strongest aerial moves in the game, you should be able to land 2 or 3 Aerial Crosses before touching the ground. Another strat is Swordmaster Nevan + Beowulf, Nevan's Air Slash deals a tonne of damage, has great range and good speed, so you can even catch a couple of them and break their armour at once, then use Beowulf's Hammer. You can also stay in the air for a while with that combo, especially when Air Slash gives you insane hang time and you have plenty of room to reset your gravity, via using Ebony and Ivory or another aerial move.
@davelisapaly67503 жыл бұрын
Agni and Rudra is actually my favorite boss in the franchise because you basically fight 2 swordmen at the same time, but yeah in general DMC 3 has a really high high point but also really abysmal low points at times

The only reason I didn't finish DMC3 on DMD is because of the bullshit enemy design. I gave up on mission 14, where the fallen are introduced. It's hard because they phase through walls and are often out of reach, not because it's a smartly designed enemy. BTW, ranking in DMC 5 sucks as well, but it's better than 3 and 4, yeah. But sometimes you play like ass and get over 6000 points, and sometimes you keep SSS and get barely 5k.

well tbh the dedicated dodge of dmc has always been jumping it has generous s so 0 damage is very feasible

My experience with the game changed as my skill progressed in the game. As my first game in the series, I've had a blast playing at the beginning. I actually played early PC port and beaten it with a keyboard. Then I bough a controller and I start to hone my skills. And as my skills grow, my frustration with the game was grown as well. My main problem comes from enemy design. On normal and hard difficulty they're mixed bag with little HP and almost barely use their trademark moves. With very hard and especially DMD they become a damage sponges for the sake of style meter and move set shifts toward their most powerful moves and unbreakable blocks. The thing is their moves doesn't change player's tactics much, just makes more cautious of more aggressive behavior, while with bloated HP you can spend time to simply kill a helpless Sloth, who have absurd amount of HP, it's just became a waste of time. Sloths with Devil Trigger is even worse case as was shown in a video. I don't like style system in any DMC game, so combat design wouldn't appeal to me. But at least in DMC1 and DMC2 demons don't have absurd amount of health and ranged weapons can be used to actually kill them, so I prefer design in those two games. Bosses is overall okay in my opinion. Quiet often I replay mission 13 specifically for boss battle. I dislike Leviathan's Heart and Geryon boss battles. Mission 20 boss on DMD with Dante is quiet easy for contrary to what was said in the video. One boss that seems to never been mentioned is Hell Vanguard. This boss/mini-boss is the most annoying enemy in the game for how repetitive it is and how much damage it can deliver with it's teleportation. Style system is great for newcomers. I'm sure a lot of people progressed like I have from trickster to royal guard. Gunslinger and swordmaster was cool for me at first, but didn't help killing enemies fast enough. Quicksilver and doppelganger is there I guess, barely used them. My preferred style is royal guard, as using royal release and DT blast can take quiet a lot of health from anything unlucky to get hit by them. Overall I still enjoy this game, but I have no motivation to replay 120 missions over again (240 counting Vergil).

Ah yes. Itsuno and his team set such a high standard for action games. DMC 3 became my favorite game ever. I thought nothing can beat it. ( then DMC 5 happened lmao ). Great video. Really nailed my feelings. By far the worst thing about this game are enemies. Fortunately i feel it got fixed in 5, making it the perfect DMC game and a masterpiece.

As someone who recently started playing thru all the games again, 3 was definitely the one I spent the longest on...yeah alot of the enimies and bosses are str8 up bad. Crazy for how absolutely amazing the story was. It was really cool hearing young dante with his higher pitched voice and cocky lines into the more mature dante at the end who even speaks deeper for some reason but it kind of works to show how far he really has come from the start of the game
