You forgot to mention the extremely subtle, yet really appropriate, ending scene where we see Dante truly establish his "Devil May Cry business". Whereas in the beginning, the place was falling apart, Dante was dressed practically like a bum(no shirt, boots untied, worn pants), now he was well-dressed(showing professionalism), his place was styled with trophies and memorabilia, and he even had the sign up. Most importantly was the three added details to his new shop: 1. A picture of his mother on the table to remind him of his humanity and loss, the driving factor of his job and power. 2. Sparda. Where as he once wielded Rebellion to symbolize his personality of an outcast who "didn't have a family" and believe in nothing, now he accepts his Father and Family along with the role of protector which the true wielder of Sparda should be. 3. His bloody glove. The glove reminds him of his sacrifice to be who he is today, along with a reminder of humility. He knows never to thirst for power so desperately, no matter the cause, so as to prevent himself from falling off the path like his Brother. It also reminds him that despite how dark things might become, we can all find our way back to the light. Much like Vergil tried to do at the end.

It kinda makes me sad people think that all DMC games present stupid story for the sake of showing crazy action. I've been saying this FOR YEARS, DMC's story is great, especially 3. It has good symbolism, good humour, and it also recontextualises 1's story.

*Na, it's just Shakespearean literature mixed with Castlevania and 90's edgy anime. The game works perfectly and it's self aware of what it is; A superficial story in every aspect, it doesn't try to give you unnecessary dept, it doesn't need to. Dmc 3 accomplished more with less. Less exposition, Less excess dialogue, less characters, less bs we usually get in books, films other games etc.... it cuts off the excess fat and it gives you a super lean and clean piece of work.* This game has little exposition, well arkham and lady do most of the exposition but Dante doesn't do the audience any favors when it comes to explaining the events that are unraveling but whenever he feels like it he makes the story more understandable and helps the story progress with simple one liners. That is the result of lazy writing and brilliant writing depending on how you look at it. This game is both brilliant and bad when it comes to story telling. Is the divine comedy combined with Shakespearean tragedy. The reboot added a lot more to Dante and made him human in every aspect so much some people call him emo because he is very emotional and he feels real so real he comes off as dick and annoying for half of the game. The reboot is a prequel of the prequel that is dmc 3 *That Dante had layers here's why:* Reboot Dante if you really played the game is a kid that has been homeless, grew up between juvenile prison and the streets he's literally a city white trash... He's been rejected and oppressed his whole life, can see demons, has superhuman capabilities and can't relate to nobody. Despite all this he's always skeptic in who to trust but is always optimistic and makes the best out every situation with a realistic approach which translates to "Fuck you" seriously fuck everything cause his entire existence and life makes 0 sense. That's just the beginning of the game since prior to that he lived with no purpose and didn't had any love ones. * *2.* DmC Dante is a hero and has morals, he served and put his life on the line for the same individuals that imprisoned him and rejected him, abused him humans. At first he didn't wanna do it because he had insecurities, anger and didn't know who he was Once he learned the truth of who he is and controlled his power he is given the choice to take over the world alongside with the only family member he has and the only person he can relate to. GUESS WHAT HE DID??? He gave it all away for humanity, his brother, the chance to rule it all... *3.* Dante never saw himself as anything greater than a regular human. He was cocky, annoying and mouthy yet humble when the moment of truth came. This is he had in common with the original Dante. They are both the same person the thing is dmc Dante was way more emotional and acted realistically with a real dialect a ghetto kid from the slums would use.

To me it would've been interesting to see the dmc 3 reboot since the tension was built in the 2013 reboot and it looked like it was going the dmc 3 route with Vergil becoming obsessed with power and revenge, a solid back story to Dante and character development from emo to hero. Also dmc Dante obtained white hair and it grew out a bit. Dmc 3 happened after 1 year Dante and Vergil face each other, so the reboot fits in perfectly. Too bad we probably ain't gonna see it. To me the original saga was mediocre with 1 and 3 been my favorite and they are both short games, 2 and 4 are ok I guess. The franchise has always been mostly hype I'm not gonna lie. I grew with it, love the combat system, 22 years old now and just got done replaying dmc 3 in ps4 on dmd mode but is not as great as people make it seem... well based on Reviews, inconsistencies, capcom, sales, my own opinion.

The best part of this, and the main thing that I think elevates it, is that almost none of this is ever explicitly laid out to the player, it's all subtext and nuance in scenes played off as nothing more than schlock Vergil doesn't have to explain his motivation to you, he can just grandstand about chasing power like a cheesy cartoon villain, and the game trusts its audience to make the underlying connections on their own This game is deep, and not fake art house deep, but legitimately layered and filled with meaning

Many modern fiction tries to entertain the reader with as complicated story and characters and possible, but ultimately isn't even sure the themes it's trying to convey. In the end, things like the world building only needs to be as complicated as it needs to be, but people often got their priorities wrong.

I was going to do my own video on DMC3's narrative but I'm so glad I didn't. You detailed why I've been praising this game's story for years and why I always argue against the idea that it's a 'stupid story'. When Lady shoots Arkahm at the top of the tower and her laughter slowly turns to uncontrollable sobbing, I lose it. I don't mean crying wise, I mean I get angry that someone sees that, after everything she's done and represents, and say the story is bad. Fantastic work.

I think the best way I can put DMC3's story is that, "It's a simple story told well". And for that time period that is a great accomplishment for Capcom. At that time the best story I think they had done in a game was one of the Resident Evil's.

This deserves more views, people always used DMC as an example of bad storytelling, bad voice acting, excess of over the top action and goofiness and I remembered that I used to counter these arguments with this game in forums over a decade ago. Eventually I also started thinking that maybe I was looking too much into it and that the franchise should only be considerated for it's gameplay elements. This game touches some very important themes that occur daily in our lives, like hatred, hardships, forgiveness and redemption, which communicated through both cutscenes and gameplay and are shamefully overlooked. And your video also explains very well the difference from DMC3 Dante and Vergil's characters in comparison to its reboot counterparts(even if not intended, lol). I can only hope that capcom learns from this game during DMC5's development. If that game turned out to be the last in the series, but having improvements over the DMC4 combat engine, having a strong story expanding the conceps stablished by this game(Dante, Nero, Vergil, Trish and mundus together would be perfect for this) and being a complete 'fully fleshed out' experience with enemy and boss variety, with high replay value on its missions, I would be satisfied.

Bad VA? Maybe in 1 and 2. DMC3 and 4 have some pretty decent voice-over. As for the cheesiness and over-the-top action, I think it's part of the appeal. It's not meant to be serious at all times nor to be taken seriously. It's goofy, carefree anime action. On top of that, DMC3's script does have its issues, but it's structured in a competent way (with proper character arcs, good five-act structure, mid-story plot twist, climax and ending that ties up all the subplots), it has some touching moments and bits of great performance (see Arkham's death - Lady's VA just nails it). The cutscene directing and fight choreography isn't something to frown upon, either. Just because it's "dumb entertainment" doesn't mean it's not written and executed in a good way.

Atleast it’s not the DmC reboot Dante. In DMC3, Dante swore that he will stop Vergil from basically undoing their father’s work. That’s his reason for fighting late game. He’s only willing to kill him if that’s what it takes. In DmC reboot, Vergil wasn’t antagonistic to Dante in anyway and generally cared for him as family. What did he do wrong? Suggesting to rule the world with an ideology that made sense. (we are the very same species that murdered people over skin colour, we are stupid) And what does El Donte decide to do? To kill the only family member he has left. Without even trying to understand him or listen to him and antagonizing Vergil in the process. You know what? I can take that. That probably just shows how determined El Donte is with preventing a second Mundus. That’s fine, I don’t agree with it but I would’ve understood if that was the case. But nope, a simple “please” from his drug addicted goth gf that jacks off squirrels to extract their semen is what it takes for him to go back on his previous decision. F**k consistent character writing and f**k the reboot.

"We are the Sons of Sparda. Within each of us flows his blood, but more importantly, his soul!" That scene before the final confrontation with Vergil was not just the best in the entire series, it elevates above so many games in general and still gets me a bit emotional in the right mood. It's also why the shitty reboot was so shitty; they were completely ignorant about the significance behind a Son of Sparda since in the reboot that title was utterly meaningless and yet they were brazen enough to keep a difficulty named after it as though they were doing us a service. Anyway, thanks a million stabs for making this. And now, on to DMC5!

I wanna say something as addition to, what you're saying in the video. I've heard a lot of complaints, that Arkham is a cliched villain, your typical hungry for power lunatic. However, I think there's one scene, that separates him from villains of that kind. It's the one, where Lady is pointing a gun at him. He goes: "What have I done wrong? Even the heroic Sparda sacrificed a woman so that he could become a legend!". He sort of implies, that the line between good and evil is almost non-existent, and that he's just a product of his environment. I think, it's an important moment, because we usually assume the villains know they're evil, but here, we see a man that has lost contact with humanity so much, that he doesn't even understand, what's good and what's evil. It realy makes me wonder, how terrible his life must've been. And I think that adds tragedy to his character, because he can't really be happy, if he doesn't fulfill that pointless dream of having more power, and/or possibly hurting more people for no reason. He's probably a sadist and/or a psychopath, but he can't really do anything about it. It's also a social commentary, on how society likes to heroify people, what with Sparda being a controversial figure, yet treated as some sort of saviour. Maybe that's what Arkham wished to be. Maybe he lived his life in the shadow of that divine figure, continuously being humiliated, maybe even by his wife, whom he calls "one miserable human being". We could never know, but I think it's amazing, how a single phrase "What have I done wrong?" opens up so many questions about a character, and also gives so many hints.

Well, yeah, but we are made aware of his view on good/evil, and that already puts him into higher league than most villains, who decide to ignore that question. But, ignoring that question automatically puts villains into good or evil category, and implies that there can't be a middle ground. It sort of deprives the villain of a huge spectrum of character development, cause now the only development he can have is to go from evil to good and vice versa. It's like the difference between showng a piece of a bigger picture vs. showing a small, but finished picture.

Pyro-Nexus You have a point. It is quite exciting. It begs the question, is sacrificing a life appropriate in some cases. But, while both did sacrifice a woman, one did it for the benefit of all. Arkham was driven by no such selfessness. It makes me wonder what drove him. It reminds me of this story told in this movie of a prince who killed his love in her sleep just so the people of the kingdom would support him and believe the queen was evil. He ruled, and was just in how he treated his people. I would think that Vergil and Dante's mother was willing but who knows. Maybe arkham and sparda aren't that different. I've been touting Devil may cry 3's narrative excellence for years so it's great to see someone else appropriately sing its praises. I'm just curious about one thing though: in your video it seemed like you were implying that Rihanna's work is deep or at least excellently constructed. I find that to be a very interesting perspective; please explain

I loved the video man I wish I had some spare cash to toss your way. What really pisses me off about that though is I just saw a 30 minute video that was supposed to be about a sonic forces critique and it was just a loop of some garbage satire with at LEAST 10 ads thrown in between. Clearly that guy was just trying to take advantage of youtube's ass of system.

With regards to Vergil taking a moment to look at his half of the amulet in his first cutscene, it should be noted that after he takes Dante's half after Vergil 1, he takes another moment to press it to his forehead before he slicks his hair back. A very subtle touch that's easily missed, but equally important.

Vergil's introduction kinda reminds me of sephiroth at the start of FF7, remember that giant snake thing that you had to avoid with a chocobo at the start? That thing would (generally speaking) mop the floor with you if you fought it. You finally get past it and see that sephiroth brutally killed one of them. At that point you're like "dang... Sephiroth did that?"

I must say, I only got into Devil May Cry back in May. I found out about it via playing Resident Evil and finding out DMC 1 was originally gonna be Re4. I love 1, 3, and 4, while 2 is somewhat enjoyable. I heard about the fact that 3 was almost universally accepted as the best DMC title, and I definetly share that opinion after beating all 4. Between the portrayal and backstory of Vergil before DMC 1, how Dante came to name his shop, how he obtained force edge, it does everything a great prequel should do, without causing continuity errors. It shows us how Dante has become humbled by his capabilities, and chooses to have a playful demeanor for most combat situations. We also get 2 beloved characters (Vergil and Lady), and an advanced combat system that allows the player to truly unleash their skill. I love your analysis of 3, and I agree with everything you said. DMC went from something I never had interest in playing, to one of my favorite gaming franchises, and Devil May Cry 3 is a big reason for that.

Same, I got into DMC kind of around May. I played Re4 first (for the first time as well) and gave DMC 1 a try. Since then I played all 3 DMC games. It's strange because while overall I agree that 3 is the best, the combat is a lot more fun in 4 and the overall presentation is better in 1 (the castle enviroment is a lot better designed than the tower in my opinion). But 4's few bosses and 1's fairly simple combat hold them back. Let's hope that DMCV will be as good as they promise.

I suppose people nowadays kinda miss the fact that simple story doesn't mean it's a bad story. DMC3's story was so memorable because it was simple like a fiary tale with a good morale. Well a WAY PAST COOL fairy tale but still. It reminds me about many Russian fairy tales where the main hero was ""Insert name here" the Fool" , usually "Ivan the Fool" - and it's exactly what it says - the character is a fool but it is that foolishness that allows him to follow his heart ("And now my soul says it wants to stop you!"), to easily forget offence against him (Lady shot him in the head when they first met and he didn't care) to always try to help others even at his own expense (he got into the fight with Lady to stop her, losing time to go after Arkham when he could've just let her go and allowed Lady get herself killed) and be as daring as it gets while constantly screwing up and still trying again and again and again (Yep it is Dante). And like the story of DMC3, the russian fairy tales with Ivan the Fool all were SIMPLE stories... But nevertheless it is them who stood the test of time.

Small little correction that I want to spread around to help fix what is now known to be a misconception as discovered by someone under the name platinumparagon after they did extensive research into it. The difficulty for DMC 3 in the "west" was actually only for the western NTSC release due to western reporters generally saying they felt the game was on easy mode when playing the demo despite it actually being on normal. This caused the western release plans to have hard as normal, but something different happened with the PAL version. The full western release version was tested out in Europe, but Capcom found that PAL players were having a hard time with the change in difficulty so they went back on the difficulty change for the PAL release. No such testing was done for non Japan NTSC regions which resulted in the difficulties we have now. I'll leave a link to the much more detailed and sourced written post by platinumparagon in a reply to this since youtube bots aren't a fan of links last I checked.

When you mentioned the tower rises after the defeat of the first Hell Vanguard, it kinda reminds me of Kill la Kill when the main character standing in front of Honnouji Academy from below. Wonder if you watched the show? Though the characters in the show are written differently, there's a lot in common in terms of design and developments though. Red and Blue, Hot-headed vs Cool, Big Metal weapon vs Katana etc. It's true that the siblings are perhaps the most iconic characters throughout action game history. Vividly remembers the moment I saw Dante in the DMC remake and asked "Is that son of Sparta Vergil in this?", just like you mentioned at 7:16 lol. It kinda surprised me. Anyway I like your tone shift in Part 3. Seems like you're very comfortable with recording in front of a mic and I hope I have that ability. I guess keep practicing is the only way. Definitely learnt a thing or 2 from this video and you earn a follower here. Makes me wanna play the darn game again and do some Jump Canceling with the default button mapping. Nice video and I I can remember hearing that, Ninja Theory being brought to make the next, as Keiji Inafune put it, "tailored made to what fans wanted" Devil May Cry game because of their story telling finesse, though that was largely down to outside writers for both Heavenly Sword and Enslaved. DmC was the first game written and directed by their very own Tameem Antoniades and made the claim, as well as being in direct competition with Bayonetta on the gameplay front, it would shatter the myth that video game stories were nothing but mere trite compared to film, theatre and literature, assuming Antoniades did his job right... the less said about the results the better.

This is An amazing video and insight to DMC3 it gave me so much more insight into my favorite game of all time I never realized Vergil wasn't truly the bad guy I read somewhere that Dante believes that some humans are more evil than demons themselves and I think about it and see Vergil actually wasn't the bad guy in DMC3 story he was just like Dante but different in his own ways but he was motivated by the same thing the death of thier mother and absence of their father hat trauma manifested in thier Own ways Vergil seeker power because he was fueled by fear of being powerless to stop a threat towards his well being Dante is motivated by compassion because he understand what this pain and loss feels like thus compelling him to make sure others don't have to suffer this pain it's all so sad I think this game truly defines what a Devil may cry is a catchphrase is devils never cry in this series yet Dante cries at the loss of his brother and it's so fucked up because Arkham was a mere human who did a evil dad just like a devil would and for what? Greed and power Dante and Vergil could have all gone on living life like normally but this human comes in and does what a devil would do and he's human there's so much depth to this game it's unreal how people don't see it..

Yep, and people say that God of War has an amazing story and yet it's 1-dimensional compared to both DMC and Bayonetta, and yet people cannot bring up DMC and Bayo without first loudly and clearly proclaiming that they don't like the story. It's as if they're ashamed, so if they don't say this out loud, they think that you might not take them seriously, or that you might think they're immature. I bring up both of these franchises to illustrate how people will only take a story seriously when the story itself is deadly serious. Therefore it doesn't matter how shallow GOW's story is in comparison to DMC and Bayo because it's so darn serious that they blindly claim it's amazing. I think this comes from a misguided idea of what "Maturity" is. It's gamer insecurity, and it's endemic.

I'm not saying they're complex characters, but Kratos(and GOW in general) is only 20% as complex as Bayo and Dante, and that's probably being kind. These characters have subtlety, Kratos for the most part doesn't. They encompass a far wider range of moods and emotions, have many more layers to them, and DMC and Bayonetta in general express many more themes and concepts in their overall stories, especially Bayo, in comparison to GOW. I don't get it. So they're "cringy"? Is that code speak for "not deathly serious 100% of the time"? But man, I love Kratos. In some ways, he is the ultimate video game character. Anger is an emotion fit to be expressed in gameplay (more so than emotions such as sympathy, which is what a lot of games go for with cutscenes), and GOW does this better than anything else. Every animation, combat mechanic, sound effect, even the puzzles are all geared towards expressing anger through gameplay. People don't get it. They see it as a movie, their movie-mindset tells them that Kratos is an asshole. But the real point here is to make you feel that anger in-gameplay so that you feel like you are Kratos, and the anger is in service to the gameplay. I know most stories in games have nothing to do with the gameplay, and people are so used to this that the intent behind Kratos's anger has been misunderstood by many. Side note: Of course, the "story in service of the gameplay" has been totally discarded for the new GOW. Now you're not Kratos. Kratos is Kratos, and you're supposed to empathize with him like it's a movie, so the haters got exactly what they wanted, and they frame this dumbing-down as "GOW growing up and becoming mature" to make all of those people who don't get it feel good. THAT'S cringy. I could go on forever about this but, suffice to say, I'm disappointed. I don't play games to empathize, I play them to experience. I'll be giving the game a chance, but it's an uphill battle. It'll have to be extraodinary to help me see past the dumbed down combat(that's in addition to the style switch from video-game to movie-game!).

You know I was reading a book recently, and in it, the author described how when people are playing, it can look silly to an outsider, but the people playing are often incredibly serious about it, no matter how silly they look. This defines gaming. I find that DMC embodies that, and it also shows why we should stop caring what outsiders think, and why video game stories should be allowed to be fun and not always as serious as TLOU and GOW.

SwinnyUK The new GOW isn't dumb down just different. That was one of the main points to make the game about giving players more options, do your research.

I've done my research. Are you one of those guys who only plays with the Blades of Choas and mashes Sqaure, square, triangle through the whole game? If so, then it's no wonder you can't see it for the downgrade that it is. The problem with GOW is that it was made with casual players in mind so whilst there is a lot of depth to it, you can also be as dumb as you like whilst playing, which ultimately means that most people miss out on like 90% of what the combat has to offer. This is why the correct amount of challenge is important to games. If DMC3 wasn't so hard at release, that game wouldn't have as many high-level players, since they'd be no incentive to dig in to that depth. It's this problem that GOW faces I'm excited to play the game, and you can see that I have a Demon's Souls avatar so yeah, I think it's good that they're taking inspiration from a good game(Dark Souls). But is the combat as expressive as the old GOWs? Nowhere near. Not even close. Not even the same ball park. Not even the same universe!! It's not even the same genre anymore, and usually I'd say that comparing an RPG to a Hack and Slash is totally unfair. But when you're called God of War and you have the exact same main character, you're inviting that comparison yourself, right? There's no getting around that.

SwinnyUK nope, and apparently you haven't done any real research of the game according to your response. Just because the game isn't high speed nonsensical action doesn't means it's dumb down. That and the fact that you've only seen so little of the game.

Tbh, I watch this video often. Like, more than I would assume would be normal. I think it's mostly due to how well articulated it is in explaining the overarching narrative and the lore within the game itself, as well as all of the philosophical questions it poses. I like listening to it all. It helps me get a better understanding of what makes good writing, well, GOOD. Thanks man, love ur stuff. Really hope u post another PS5 vid BYYYYEEEE

Coming back to this video again made me remember why I truly love this series. And then I remembered DMC5 ruining everything prior with it's story retcons and dumbing-down of character motivations. Sigh...now I'm sad again.
