Dante awakened his demonic side by getting stabbed by rebellion. Vergil awakened by merely embracing his demonic side Nero got his arm mutated, stabbed multiple times once by the yamato, was assimilated into the savior and got his arm ripped off by daddy. If he wouldn't awaken after all that, then something must really be wrong with him.

They even performed their new transformations in front of the Family Portrait -Vergil stabs himself with Yamato to seperate himself from Man and Devil -Dante stabs himself with Rebellion to gain more power to and created his own legacy by absorbing Rebellion synchronising with his father's sword Sparda thus creating Devil Sword Dante

Either of them can easily return. In fact, Dante was even able to return to the human world without a weapon or artifact that opens portals. After DMC 2, Dante just stumbled upon a portal big enough for him to jump through. Pretty sure that indicates that portals just naturally occur which could explain how demons can enter the human world without any catastrophic events occurring, like the DMC anime between games 1 and 2

An angel like demon stopping a demon and a dragon like demon from killing each other because he wants a family. In my opinion this one scene is holds a lot of weight in the series, and can even be scene as Sparda getting what he wanted the most from his sons, to accept who and what they are. For single frames, that scene is my favorite.
