DMC1 will always be my favorite. It's a different approach to action, one that has not been replicated since, even within the series. You can feel the Resident Evil in this game. From the atmospheric music all the way to the visual storytelling, where every room feels like it was made to stop and gawk at all the fine details. Think about it! DMC1 isn't about exploration, yet it has better thought out environments like some of the later Resident Evil games. The castle isn't just a setpiece with crazy rooms (like the Temen-ni-gru), no, the layout actually makes sense and the castle is kinda beautiful actually. You enter the main hall from a secret entrance, but the red orb door actually leads to the real main entrance, which leads to the draw bridge, which leads to the courtyards, which lead to a forest through which people had to travel in order to reach the castle. If you want me to fall in love with your game, all you need is decent but fun gameplay and a lot of small details like that. I like how DMC1 is not about quick reflexe, but about knowledge. A lot of people hate Nightmare, but Ifrit's fire jump ability can not only knock back Nightmare's missiles, making them hit the core and deal massive damage, the flames can also shield you from Nightmare's spear attack and if a spear hits you while you're engulfed in flames, it will stun Nightmare. There is so much strategy to every single encounter in this game.

I know hunting down that one missing collectible sucks, but can we please appreciate how DMC1 was so far ahead of its time, that it actually replaces already collected fragments with yellow orbs? There are games _today_ that give you no hint whatsoever when it comes to collectibles, making you wonder if you've already gotten the thing or if you're just doing it wrong. Sure, an in-game list would have been nice, but the game is from over twenty years ago (jeez), so I will cut it some slack here.

This was an impressive video, the first DMC game is absolutely brutal these bosses are not joking around and the camera really doesn't help. This is a platinum to brag about not everyone can go through Dante Must Die. And don't feel bad about using items, they are a legitimate part of the game and they help relieve some of the stress this game inflicts on the highest difficulty. Just the fact you kept trying for so long just to beat Vergil 3 under your own set of rules is worthy of respect even if you caved in at the end. Having just got this plat myself like two weeks ago I felt the pain throughout this. Such a solid game with that handful of early 2000's jank not helping those hard runs. I'd originally finished my first run like 4-5 years ago and after struggling in hard mode I wrote the entire thing off. This time I powered through Hard then did Normal item farming speedruns to get enough Untouchable's and DT items and surprisingly got through a good chunk of DMD somewhat easily. Well earned Adam! I know full well how rough this one was. SSS content as always

I wish the DMC collection on steam had separate achievements. Couldn't care less about DMC2 and DMC3 is good but I don't like it enough to grind it. I felt what you through as tackling dante must die difficulty fighting nelo angelo on second and third time was a nightmare. But I'm proud of you, as you keep pushing through and finish the game until platinum. Congratulations! At my journey, I'm too dumb didn't collect yellow orbs, and not buy enough untouchable, so learned it in hard way, it took me 3 months on and off to platinum it.

I remember my experience with this game back when it was on PS2. In preparation for DMD mode, I played through Hard mode multiple times to get familiar with enemy layout/placement, farm LOTS of red orbs, holy waters, untouchables, yellow orbs, secret missions, upgrades and completely max out Dante in every way possible. Having said that, it didn't make DMD mode any less difficult; it really put my skills to the test and I was determined to overcome obstacle and earn the worthwhile reward. My successful attempt on final boss (2nd phase in volcano) lasted an entire 90 minutes and OMG were my hands sweating and it felt so good to clear that hurdle. Adam, I shared the same frustration as you with Nelo Angelo; he is one tough nut to crack. One thing that helped immensely was using the Bangle of Time during first two fights; he will freeze in place so you can just blitz him until effect wears off and you replenish DT gauge naturally or use a devil star. Otherwise, great video and I hope your journey will include the other entries in DMC series as they are great games. Cheers!

This game is one of the first I remember getting the platinum trophy for, specifically on the PlayStation 3 version of the HD collection, so this video hits kinda close to home. I also remember the irritation of having missed a single blue orb fragment, scouring the game to find it, slapping my face in my palm when I found out where it was. And I also remember the intense struggles trying not to abuse the item system in my own attempt to keep my pride. It kicks you down in so many ways, but I think that the game still allows you to get the platinum trophy even if you item carry your way through Dante Must Die means that it isn't something to be entirely ashamed of. It's still not an easy feat even getting to the point you can unlock Dante Must Die, and you still learn lots about the game and the way it's designed the more you play through it and master it. Like you in the video, Nelo Angelo 3 was ruthless, a wall. And the other bosses were already spiked up for DMD (specifically Griffon was a real pain, especially the latter two fights with him and the odd structure of the boat you fight him making it troublesome until you learn to strategize with climbing up to the mast to hail bullets on him from above when he lands), but Nelo and Phantom definitely are breaking points for even the most determined. And I was in high school. I will also mention, since you addressed the boss changes on Dante Must Die, it's not actually that they take less damage, moreso that their health bars just massively tripled. And that thing with devil trigger's healing being disabled at the very least goes out the window, having apparently left with Hideki Kamiya, the lead director of this game alongside the original Resident Evil 2 and Viewtiful Joe. I specifically bring that up because he seems to think taking away your mechanics is a good idea for harder difficulties, because years later he does it again by taking away the Witch Time mechanic from the players in the hardest difficulty in Bayonetta. I would still say I love Devil May Cry 1, but damn, DMD is a real test of that love and your pride. You arguably don't need to be as perfectly good to get the platinum trophy for it, but you end up really thinking if that pride is worth it when the items really can make a world of difference to push you to the platinum.

This is why I don’t attempt a “platinum” run out the gate on games. I usually just pick hard and enjoy it first. But I respect ya for doing this because I definitely have done this exact thing back in my hardcore platinum day/college but I love watching you overcome a difficult boss without looking up a video immediately like most kids

Hey Adam, This episode definitely documented the lows of earning a platinum trophy. I have to say that I would love to watch a DMC3 episode in the future (skip 2 as it's awful). DMC3 was where the combat system really started to evolve, and 4 and 5 perfected it, and 3 has some of the best setpieces in the game. It's not as difficult as Mundus (without items) or Nightmare 3 (ditto), but still a gruelling challenge at times, but ultimately so rewarding because of how much better DMC3 is than the first. Excellent episode, as usual, I feel sorry for you putting yourself through that much Nelo Angelo

I totally understand that, I would say test the waters with 2. The floatiness of the movement may put you off within 2 minutes, if the complete absence of Dante's "personality" doesn't. 3 is by no means easy, DMD is the hardest in the series, but you can farm orbs to repeatedly buy items etc to make it much easier, and the super costumes make the Bloody Palace a walk in the park. @@AdamMcDermott

Great episode Adam and congrats on the platinum. I would almost expect a continuity of 1 DmC per year (like Resident Evil) but the camera in some of these older games IS the difficulty.

Well done just for trying this platinum, I've never played these games and I don't thonk I ever will. Don't be disappointed in yourself, for me personally if there are thing's I can use and I'm not exploiting or hacking the game then I'm using it, it doesn't make it illegitimate imo. You still got the plat, which is something to be praised, especially with how tough these games are.

I recently did another play through of Devil May Cry and even on Normal I found it to be very difficult. Items are a part of the game and I used them. No shame and no regrets here. Great episode, I enjoyed it as always!

My God, Adam, YOU TOOK ME BACK TO HIGH SCHOOL! Almost any confusion you had, I had them, too. lol I could barely keep my heart in my chest, and I freaking loved fighting against Angelo (wait, he's named Virgil?). I'm very impulsive, so Angelo forced me to play diffferently, and it always fascinated me that I could play in a more measured and disciplined way. I played this game in my senior or junior year, I believe. I gave up on Dante Must Die when I fought nightmare for the third time. Jeebus, that was.... AAARRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!

Fantastic episode, Adam. Honestly, don't let yourself down like this. DMC1 is a VERY challenging game and I don't feel like using items diminishes your success, even if it might feel that way. Items are meant to be used and there is not trophy that wants you to not use them. You didn't use glitches or cheats and getting from 'struggling on normal' to 'succeeding on DMD' is already impressive! Also: If you get a boss to a SLIVER of health, you already got the skill to beat them. It was only a matter of time, of which we don't have unlimited. Congrats for the plat in any case. I would love another DMC episode, though honestly I'd recommend skipping 2 because it's simply not good. It's got the easiest platinum trophy, though :D Aside from Bloody Palace, which is ... time consuming and annoying if you do it legit. DMC3 is also easier than 1 imo, you can definitely do it. 4 and 5 are where it gets insane.

Think I would have to do 2 though, I'm a suck for doing stuff in order. Never played 4 and 5. They look so much fun.

Will at least be interesting to hear your thoughts on it! 4 and 5 are really great indeed. 4 has the issue of having to backtrack through the entire game with Dante at some point, but combat and bosses are so good in that game.

I got the plat last week, and was so thankful for not having to do the 500 VR missions, though getting a Big Boss rank is something I never thought I'd be able to do. Ah mate. Absolutely should feel proud of this. It’s a VERY hard platinum. I did it myself last year. Actually can’t remember it much it was a blur. I do remember playing it over and over to farm the 3 or so untouchables you get per playthrough. I think I had 15 or so at the end and used them all on nightmare 3 and Mundus. Brilliant episode!

Fantastic episode Adam, i would never be ashamed to use items for the hardest difficulty. The items are there to be used, if not for the hardest difficulty- when!? Sure bragging rights would be good for Virgil but hell! You did it! I would gladly watch more, but i would recommend the use of items next time! This has made me want to give it a shot! Can't wait for the next one mate!

This probably isn't going to come as a surprise to you. But Devil May Cry was initially an earlier version of RE4. Shinji Mikami said it strained to far from it's horror roots. There were other versions of RE4 like the Hookman version or Fog version became another separate IP called Haunting Ground. Because all these versions stemmed from the same origin point, It was Hideki Kaymai who kept this as it's own thing renaming it Devil May Cry. Pretty awesome Trivia isn't it?
