My guess is that Laura was in that accident asleep at the wheel, and beth almost died, so they were brought to the Devil outposts hospital, and Laura with her strength made a deal with the cult of Ru, but it had its prices. Laura lost her memory and believed her sister had disappeared. Beth was used to bring Ru, but they needed a year to prepare. Then the game begins, Lauras arrival was for told that the dark sun is coming. And the book was just leading her to the end. So, Ru is inside Beth.
