Devil Went Down to Edom | The Weird Bible Podcast: Episode 5

The Weird Bible

Күн бұрын

In the Book of Job, the Devil went down to Edom, he was looking for a soul to steal...from God. Often cited as a story of God's cruelty and indifference, Job is, in reality, far more complex than that. Possibly a compilation of an old Jewish story and later Greek influenced philosophical dialogue, the book details the trials of the most righteous man of the day, the wealthy and successful Job. Satan is invited to tempt God's greatest servant, only to fail in breaking his faith. Aidan and Isaiah go deep into how this story of loss is really the story of salvation and growth in character.

Aiden is a woman. He just wants to be a momma and have babies to read to so they can love his voice. He needs attention and status and he gets it from sounding smart. When really he doesn’t know anything because he relies on his own knowledge instead of enlightenment from god, he sits there thinking with the devil about how to interpret what is in his desert. The book of job is a collection of stories about how god lets “evil” things happen for good reason, as long as it aligns with gods will, humans shouldn’t not judge good or bad.

@@Starkillr1 this is a cruel thing to say. I love the history parts I specifically want to know how long it was. If I wasn't listening I would be looking it up to see how long ago it was. And if the dead sea scrolls are involved I need to know that that is freaking cool. Aiden knows how cool that is. People say things for some people's benefit. You are just not that person about history.

This video helped restore some of my faith in Christ. I'm still thinking about if or when to fully return, but I left ever since my grandfather died, but to think it was "God calling him home"... I remember that I was told by the parents of a friend of mine that they were uncertain that he would go to Heaven because he was a Protestant instead of a Catholic, and that's what turned me away. I was upset at them, because I was thinking "How could God turn him away because of a few differences in worship?" I was also upset at God, for he took my grandfather away just when he was starting to seem like he was feeling better, but this helped me understand a little better. Like I said, I'm not sure if I will come back to the fold fully, but this video helped quite a bit.

So proud for you about it 🥺 I've heard from the bible (some people too, like other youtubers) that when we're hurting or confused that's when we should hold onto bible God and his words the most, because that stability is the most trustworthy one since it doesn't die, gets hurt, or makes you think twice on it Apparently, that's what they've been through and I wanna believe people's supposed experiences y'know? Plus it does feel like it certainly has helped me keep my sanity even through a lot of pains in the past too lol..

Isaiah has a similar attitude about Job that I have about Abraham's sacrifice of Issac. I was an atheist with a mild interest in theology and history before, but when I truly came to understand the depth of devotion and harrowing sorrow in which Abraham was in on the mountain, I became a believer. I doubt others would come to the understanding I did, yet it made the entire purpose of Christ's sacrifice so clear to me. If there is any path to salvation for the cynical atheist I used to be was to truly understand the meaning of sacrifice first and everything else erupts from that understanding.

It's always nice to see people tackle the harder topics in the Bible. It seems a lot of people outside christian circles think Christians are too naive or stupid to think of these things... Really, we usually ARE thinking about it, we just might not be certain about the answers or not feel confident enough in our answers to share them unprompted.

The book of Job is by far my favorite in the Bible so I don’t say this to handwave away all the great writings in it, but I do believe that it is not based on true events. That being said, people will still read great fiction like 1984, To Kill a Mocking Bird, etc and teach entire lectures on it, yet the second a single part of the Bible is a metaphor or not a true event it gets thrown out the window and laughed at. The messages that this story conveys are so deep and profound it is truly life changing. Some of the discourse between Job and his friends could be discussed in entire series of philosophical writings. To cap it all off, people often call Job’s wife and friends bad people, but they are supposed to represent how normal people would react in this situation. It is a layer of deep irony that when looking in a mirror we hate what we see. Such a wonderful and spiritual book and I’m excited to hear your guys’ thoughts!

Y'all talked about both Job and Inspiring Philosophy and I was hoping you were going to talk about the idea that Job's wrongdoing was believing that he deserved the blessings that were given to him. It's demonstrated in God saying directly to Job "What has anyone done for me that I owe anything to them?" This phrase suggests that Job sees his sacrifices and good deeds as favors for God that must be repaid.

These conversations are really helping me see the rationale and belief system of Christianity because nothing really made sense to me growing up and my family likes to think of god as “the big man in the sky”. I consider myself agnostic these days, but I always love hearing the ideology of Christ because it helps me better understand those around me. My first job was at a rehab clinic and the 12 steps is pretty much entirely based around God and how through grace and forgiveness you can heal, and even though I listened and went to meetings with patients, I could never truly understand that point of view. I hope that gaining a more philosophical sense of the Bible can give me the confidence to use scripture as a positive tool while talking with those struggling and battling their own demons. This passage of job is really clicking with me, because I’ve seen people at their lowest and heard about the trauma that they’ve been through, but have never really been able to give them a sense of security that “god sees you and he knows you and he will help you” but ANYWAY, I cannot express to you guys how much your conversations have guided me more than anyone else in my 26 years of living (be that my own unwillingness to learn or not 😮‍💨) but thanks for showing us how one can use the Bible through tough times 💗💗💗

We may not have prophets, but I do believe god speaks to us in dreams and through others. He gives us knowledge whether or not we need to do anything with it. Sometimes it’s getting us prepared for things like death. Things that we naturally don’t understand and are upsetting because of the finality. It’s just a way to help us in this human form. I remember having more than one dream of sitting in my grandparent’s living room and just talking to them. This is after they both passed within a year of each other. I had a longing to be around them since it had been years. Do that was a nice way of maybe saying goodbye in a way that I didn’t feel like I could before.

When it comes to agnostic or non Christian’s getting into heaven I personally believe god judges then based on how they lived and treated others rather than what they believed in. With so many religions in the world it would take an evil god to condemn them for following the wrong one. I personally believe god is more lenient than we give them credit for. If you’re a genuinely good person who tried their best, I believe there’s a spot in heaven waiting for you.

Really enjoy your discussions just found lore lodge yesterday (Killdozer video was really well done) and was surprised to realize the guy I found talking about Blood Meridian a few weeks ago was his cohost. That being said I would air a word of caution telling Mormons that they're going to heaven because "they're trying to be a good person" is a good interpretation of the Bible. We need one thing to go to heaven and that is the perfect sacrifice of Christ on our behalf to wash away our sins. Salvation is Christ plus nothing. We cannot add one iota to our salvation and if we're depending on being a good person we're doomed before we start.

Haven't listened to this pod in over a year. Picked this episode out of nowhere. Then you guys both mentioned having to move forward after breakups I've never been religious, but that seems a bit more than coincidence

Something really important to keep in mind of the book of Job is that it isn't considered nonfiction in Judaism. In my English Jewish Study Bible (because I don't understand Hebrew), the Editors state that Job is a parable from the time of Jews living in Persia. This is most likely why Satan is personified the way they are, because (according to the JSB) Satan as a character (rather than more of a malevolent force inside of humanity) didn't really become prevalent until the Jews of Persia.

35:59 as someone who went through an internet witchcraft phase before looking to better sources, I have to agree. People be crazy. 54:20 on the topic, at Camp we have a priest (who is a REALLY good speaker, his homilies are amazing, even if I had to leave mass at some point bc he was preaching rejection of my people) & at camp, instead of his awesome homilies he does a Q&A period where all the campers get to ask their questions. It is so awesome. 58:56 as a folk catholic watching this, I really love it. It gives a perspective from people of difference branches of these faiths, & this dude is a HISTORIAN so I trust him a bit more than doctrine/dogma based preachers. It gives me a better understanding of my faith (& understanding/respect for other faiths) rather than just blindly following without truly understanding or having a relationship. This other viewpoint is def smth I didn't get in my old roman catholic church, & it's one of the reasons I like my FNMI church so much. 1:28:46 there is a mayan story where people were made many times, made of wood, made of clay, made of light, made of corn. 2:03:59 yeah. Yeah. This is why I like this podcast: historian. These are people who care about facts, & then make interpretations based on that. Oof that locke fellow. Internet witches had it right when they dissed him. 2:06:42 as a kind of catholic who kind of hates catholics, I totally relate 2:40:00 area Wow the usa really lets u have guns huh. I grew up in the city but I come from a farming family so I've had the opportunity to handle guns & shoot at cans, but I eventually want my own. I'm not much for hand guns bc they really have little use here & I've only handled one in my life, we usually have rifles on the farm. I'm torn between a good handheld that can hold an actual magazine & a sexy revolver. I mean, the handhelds are for choice more than use. Rifles are better for life in Canada & I really can't choose. I've looked at the aero survival rifle 10mm but meh. I'd be better off with what my grandpapa & my grampa use(d) because I have more experience with them. Either those or whatever my dad gets when he finally gets his. 3:14:39 you do not merit God. You are still worth God loving you. An alternate argument on polytheism is the idea that God is a patron of the Hebrew/Jewish/Israelite people, & you couldn't worship another god because they were not YOUR god. Monotheistic as in "this is my God, my one God, THE top God" & not polytheistic as in "oh yeah might as well worship other gods" bc no they are not YOUR god. Patron. 3:45:19 anarchosocialism?

Clarification on Ananias and Sapphira, *they weren't obligated to give anything.* The issue wasn't the amount of money, or the % cut they were giving (directly), it was that they lied. They could've sold half the field and given 100% of the money, they could've sold the whole field and just said "we kept half, here's the other," they had so many options that didn't involve sin, but instead they lied.

??? 40:00 What? No, none of his friends think any of that!!! When was the last time you read this book? His friends try to explain that he obviously did something wrong and that was why he was suffering, it was punishment for something. And they are arguing with uim about this. And job in his replies was, NO I GOOD MAN!!!!! Instead of humitily he exhibited pride, that was finally why God addresses him directly.

Which is weird. Every Christian should tell unbelievers or new believers to start with the Gospels, the ENTIRE reason for the Bible, Jesus, and the absolute foundation of every Christian's belief should be rooted in the Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. You can read the Gospels, believe and receive salvation, and never read another page outside of it and be fine eternally. You can't say that about any other part of the Bible, even though the entire Bible has an importance. I think the starting point should be how to be saved, and then from there, how to grow. Because without foundation of salvation, it's all in vain and ignorance. Every Christian should try to read every word of the Bible through, but especially with Old Testament, it's evey easily misconstrued by blinded unbelievers and used as fuel for their ignorance.

@@A-A-RonDavis2470 to be completely fair, I was raised in the church, I just decided to start reading on my own at 13 and forgot my place which is why I started with two non sequential books, but I thought I could read the Bible in a year and it took me until I was 17 to finish the Old Testament alone

I'm a little late with this but anyone who wants to check out the Dantes Inferno game, its absolutely worth it !!!! I mean its a God of war 3 clone in regards to the basic controls and combat system BUT it's pretty good nonetheless. Combat is fun and engaging, and there's an attack that is literally just spamming the cross. You can stun and destroy demons with the power of God

The troubles of life have often been compared to the refining of precious metals, the polishing of precious stones, even the sharpening of steel tools. "As iron sharpeneth iron, so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend" A stone can come in many different hardness and "grits". In the hands of an expert knifemaker or swordsmith, each grit is used to polish it and sharpen the edge for a desired result as the smith intends. The stone simply is what it is. It does what it does. A stone can dull and damage a weapon just as it can perfect it. Trials are going to happen to us. Life can make us bitter or better. Thank you both so much for all these episodes. I hope there are more
