He was such an awesome player to have on the Bears. He singlehandedly shortened punters/kickers distance by like 10-20 yds. When they actually kicked to him you'd hold your breath because there was always that potential he'd take it to the house. Fun man to watch.

Or using his blockers so effectively. He knows when to go 100% full speed and bust it.........and when to hold back, and allow his blockers to do their thing. Perfect example is 1:05. So hilarious to see the ball carrier run right past a convoy of blockers, only to get tackled by one dude.

SparkleGirl - the NFL competition committee moved the kickoff measurement closer.. Resulting in way more touch backs. They said it was for player safety, but many admitted, including Bellichick, it was because of Hester, Josh Cribbs, and others breaking game plans.

I'll never forget how he gulled the Giants into thinking he wasn't going to run that kick back from the end zone (seen here). That was priceless! One of his tricks was to wait until opponents, still running towards him full-tilt boogie, got close enough, and he'd suddenly turn on the jets, run straight upfield - and zoom right by them. With that kind of deception - and that kind of speed, no way they were going to catch him.

Among other things, Hester's success was predicated upon that little pause after receiving the kick when he surveyed the field and instantaneously developed a plan to attack it. Just as Ray Guy is a Hall of Famer as the best punter ever, Devin Hester should be in the Hall of Fame as the best kick returner ever.

He had a number of talents at work at once. 1) An incredible burst from zero to full speed. 2) Field vision that instantly diagnoses the blocking pattern and the possible lanes. 3) Intuitive feel for angles and momentum. He continually uses tacklers' momentum against them to simply blow right by because they don't have time to change the direction they are moving in. You never run away from momentum if you can cut againgst it. 4) Ability to break tackles.

Beginning at 10:10 : I don't know if it's the video quality, or if the video speed was turned up a bit, or if he's really running that fast, but the way the scenes (sidelines) change so quickly almost reminds me of being in a car. I can see why he was the first (only?) player to be given 100 speed in Madden.

Sometimes I think to myself that Devin Hester didn't anticipate the way a special teams unit would run down a field he anticipated and read how they would run towards him and try to guess his movements and then he would completely read the defense and know how to run to get the touchdown every single time he was a brilliant player and one a kind I've been a bears fan for 25 years and he has and always will be my favorite player to watch

When Hester waits for that FG to come up short catches it and walks as if he is going to kneel in the end zone then takes off like a bat outta Hell. That is the most badass return I've ever seen

The irony is that often times, he was never even touched or bounced off a tackle. Really had the knack of finding lanes and making cuts while not losing speed ... unbelievable. Could be the greatest return man of all-time.
