It's so funny to think about. In the summer of 1997 I went to the Penny Arcade in Rochester NY to see Testament with my friends. They were touring with these bands called Stuck Mojo and Strapping Young Lad. I was up front (basically a dive bar with a crappy stage at one end that fits 100 people uncomfortably and is where every local band has played, myself included). SYL was the first band on and I had no clue who they were. This tall skinny guy with dreads and all this other shit hanging off of him stood up there yelling insults, calling us stupid, and screaming in my face for 45 minutes to the throngs of thrash drums on speed and mostly unintelligible guitar riffs. I had never heard/seen anything like it before. If it hadn't been for Chuck Billy taking a stage dive and almost crushing me, it might have been all I remembered from that show. Over the years that is what we've all had the pleasure of getting from Devin ... something we've never heard before. For a man that says he fears change I think we've seen him change more than any entertainer there has ever been, yet, he still manages to keep all of the changes together in one person and use them collectively to astound and enchant our senses.
