Marcus saw me perform in an orchestra once (string bass) and asked if I’d be interested in teaching his son! I ended giving him lessons for about six months. First lesson I asked his wife if Marcus was in town. Wife said no, he was in England recording with Eric Clapton. Timmy, you’re not in Cleveland anymore! Every time he was in town, he watched the whole lesson. No pressure!

PINO!!! Just this morning, I listened to Vultures by John Mayer. I've heard that song 100 times, but today, I listened to only the bass. I CANNOT FREAKING BELIEVE how much his playing adds to that tune. The best part, though, is that I didn't realize JUST how good it was until I made the "effort." He somehow manages to CONSTANTLY play unbelievable licks without drawing attention to himself. On top of that, much of what makes his playing so tasty is not just the notes, but how he articulates them. He *speaks* bass like no other. I know I don't have to explain this. It's not like he's an obscure studio musician - haha. I was just SO blown away by his chops literally 12 hours ago. SO cool to have Marcus Miller on SBL! What a dream!

Sometimes I feel like I’m the only bassist in the world that isn’t really into slap bass. 😆 When I hear Marcus Miller play though, it makes me smile. It’s kinda the essence of the style. Really enjoyable interview. Thanks, man!

Kudos to Thomann for supporting the Sire basses launch in EU. I bought mine from them, a V7 gen 2, shipped from Germany to Spain as it was the only place where they sold them.

This is on a par with the amazing tutorial interview from the 80’s with BB King. Both absolute legends and geniuses but so humble , articulate and likeable. Great stuff.
