Possibly my all-time favorite movie. Fun fact: the "dream" that Ray has about having sex with a ghost was actually from a sequence they cut from the movie where he investigates a haunted Revolutionary War-era fort. He tries on the general's coat and then falls asleep. The female ghost shows up, mistakes Ray for the general, and... well, you get the idea.

Having unlicensed nuclear power is not exactly legal. On the other hand, the EPA shouldn't be randomly turning off power grids. I loved this movie as a kid. And I still love the scene where Peter and Egan turn on Ray's proton accelerator pack and then take a step away in the elevator as if that was going to do anything if the nuclear device were to explode.

This movie was ridiculously popular when it was released. I saw it opening weekend when I was a kid. Songs from the soundtrack were playing on the radio for months and T-shirts were common. At this time in the 80's was when the Environmental Protection Agency had been given wide ranging powers by the government to investigate any business for pollution. There was some of abuse of power by EPA investigators early on in their crusade to save the environment, lots of smaller businesses harassed for "suspected violations".

Thank you for posting this. I've been getting depressed with how many people say that Walter Peck was being "totally reasonable, that's what the government is supposed to do!" Maybe we should make that the litmus test for candidates running for office. "Was Walter Peck being reasonable in Ghostbusters? Would you approve or condemn his way of doing enforcement?"

The green ghost in the hotel "Slimer" was a memorial to John Belushi who was originally slated to have Bill Murrays role as Venkman. Belushi performed along side Dan Akroyd (Stantz) in Blues Brothers (if you haven't seen it - its worth a watch). Belushi was also in Animal House (again if you haven't seen it - worth the watch) where he played the living collegiate version of Slimer only with a bigger appetite.

Hey bro, if you are feeling like you missed out, we are glad for the opportunity to share these first time film experiences with you. Its one of the joys of watching film, sharing the story and artistic concepts with friends. As for the old librarian trope, I worked at a municipal library in college, and there were plenty of young early 20s librarians. Ages spanned a whole gamut. But, the job is pretty cushy considering the requirements. Back in the day, literary indexing and sorting were pretty much the job. Newer librarians have to have technology backgrounds as well. And, unfortunately, a lot of city and town libraries don't have the funding they require to maintain the social hub of information for the local community anymore. Hey, if you want another Halloween themed childhood show, add Monster Squad to your list, maybe for next Halloween season.

So Dan Akkroyd had envisioned an epic of BIBLICAL proportions with his original treatment. After shopping it around producer Ivan Reitman at Columbia liked his idea. But suggested pearing back the effects(Stay Puft was in the first act). He invited Harold Ramis(RIP) and Dan to his lake house to write a script after selling the idea to Columbia. The blue collar angle came from that weekend. They shot pretty much that script(minus the improvs by the enrire cast). Improvisations like Sigourney Weaver acting like a dog in her audition. Initially John Belushi was supposed to be in this. As was Eddie Murphy and John Candy. From all appearances Ghostbusters shouldn't have worked since this film is BASICALLY a horror comedy.....but the final product. From score, to soundtrack, to effects, to story.....everything worked. Still works nearly 40 years later. The film spawned a successful cartoon series(and spinoff), comics, video games(1 written by Ramis and Akkroyd), toys and 2 sequels(2nd coming out on the 18th or so).....as well as a poorly excecuted reboot. As to the characters Peter is the straight man(aka skeptic), Egon is very much the tech guy of the group. Ray is the heart. And Winston is the audience insert. Personally Egon was always my favorite but EVERYONE has great lines. A fun thing to think about......if Peter wasn't being such a DICK to that student, he'd have seen his experiment ACTUALLY worked. This film(and it's first sequel) is SO damn quotable. Welcome to this wonderful franchise of Ghostheads

Classic movie, it & GB2 I watch on occasion. Ghostbusters the video game is considered Ghostbusters 3, as it's the last time the main cast got together for the voicework. When you look into the background stuff it makes it all the more interesting. Aykroyd & Ramis were both Spiritualists at the time, which gives it depth overall. John Candy was originally supposed to play the part that Rick Moranis got, but he wanted to play the character as a Frenchman for some reason. Eddie Murphy was originally supposed to be Winston, but he had scheduling conflicts (he was working on Beverly Hills Cop). Lastly, the one I always wonder about. John Belushi was originally supposed to be Peter Venkman, but he ODed & died, so the role was re-written for Bill Murray. It's been said that Slimer is/was an ode to the kinds of characters Belushi tended to play. If I could visit alternate Earths, one of them would be where Belushi lived to play the Venkman role. I can guarantee that the energy of the film would be different. Would Slimer be in it at all, or would Slimer have been re-written? Oh yeah, don't bother with the crappy 2016 reboot.

_To be fair,_ I'm pretty sure a lot of the Ghostbusters's equipment isn't strictly legal or safe (Egon even refers to their packs as "unlicensed nuclear accelerators"). But Peck is still a reckless dick. And more importantly, the dangerous, untested equipment, the collateral damage they cause, and how unprofessional the Ghostbusters act is all part of the comedy.
