Fun fact: There was an athlete from Kazakhstan who won gold in some type of tournament after this movie came out, and during the award ceremony the westerners accidentally played the Borat theme song instead of the Kazakhstan national anthem. The athlete was piiiiiiissed.

It's funny because Kazakhs hate the movie especially the president but then said president was pissed because the villagers they show are Romani not Kazakhs and then said a bunch of racial slurs on how dare they. In the process fitting the stereotype shown in the movie they so hate lmao

To answer your question how he sets up all of these meetings, he poses as a real reporter from Khazakstan filming a documentary about America. He does it in such a way that they don't realise how ridiculous he is until they sit down and do the actual interview. And he makes them sign documents beforehand to protect him from legal issues. However, he has still had many lawsuits with people trying to sue him. The Pamela Anderson situation was a setup. She knew what was happening in advance and played along with it.

By telling people it's being filmed for Kazakhstan tv, people let their defenses down and say what they really think because they likely don't know where or what Kazakstan is. They figure it'll never be seen by anyone they know.

I think it would be amazing if, one day, Sacha did a TV special where he meets up with all the people he pranked in these movies, and isn't in character. But I don't think it's likely. He values his privacy WAYYYY too much. He's in character from the moment he meets these people, 'till the moment they're gone. And in the last 20 years, he's done barely any interviews as himself. He doesn't even break character on movie sets when he fluffs a line. He just reacts to it as the character would.

He’s a dick about his privacy. He was at a wedding and the photographer, a friend of mine, was approached and told to delete any images that he was in. Like dude, you’re at your friend’s wedding; of course there is gonna be a photographer taking pictures of everyone and everything.

Well the reality is the era of the 2000's that this was made in the Hollywood major studios were far more brave and adventurous to tread new ground rather than the era of today where so much including the Hollywood studio machine is afraid to do that in case causes somebody/ a group of people offence and complaints are made even though those very same complaints are mostly so petty and exaggerated. Alas for sure none of the big studios would touch this these days they would be too scared to. It is a telling thing for example that Borat the original one was released by 20th Century Fox, and yet the sequel all those years later which was roughly about a year/ 2 years ago - was released via Amazon.

It's slower paced. More pitiful and not in a funnier way somehow to compensate. EVERY millenial as far as I'm concerned need to see actually VERY similar stuff done by Robin Williams and Yakov Smirnoff. Williams did the movie after a lovable, bad off character not unlike Borat to some level in his 'Moscow On The Hudson' AND Smirnoff's stand up routines ORIGINATED the joke logic of saying something cruelly-hilarious of the opposite detail example of "In Soviet Russia, TVs watch *_*YOU._** " ROFL!

Best/messed up part of all this is that the people in khazakstan didn't know what the movie was about or what was being said about them (they don't speak English). Once they saw the film, those same people literally hate SBC because of how he portrayed them lol.

I was a young teenager when this first was released. The one scene I've never forgotten is with the black guys. They are the only people who accept Borat for who he is. Well maybe the drunk road trippers later on too. But all the upperclass holes treat Borat like dirt.

the villagers you saw at the beginning and end of movie were super pissed after learning what the movie was about. they were oblivious how he referred to them. Basically no one in the U.S. knew about Sasa Baron Cohen and his role as Borat so that's why he could crash on national tv. Yeah that's how gullable people in the U.S. were (and probably still are)

-The "hometown" wasn't a Kazakhstan. It some kind of gypsy ghetto somewhere in Romania. -Kazakhstan government didn't "enjoyed" movie but they took into account that audience liked it so they decided not to ban movie amd instead make it work on them. Actually smart move. -Ordinary people on footage didn't know that they were filmed. -Yes, he was sued by lot of people. PS: You should watch "Brüno" and especially "Dictator" from Sascha Cohen. Same vibes as this movie and even more.

He's an actor that pushes far beyond the boundaries of most comedians/actors. Obviously it's not a real documentary but his goal is to make everyone feel as uncomfortable and angry as possible. GENIUS. This movie is elementary compared to some of his other work.

This is just a character he plays and it's all done candid camera style. They are all genuine people and reactions and that makes it hilarious. This guy (Sasha Baren Cohen) really has balls to do this stuff. But just remember the whole thing is just a comedy, and one of the first of its kind to be filmed like this.

But then, I also belong to a Mardi Gras Krewe🤪 I am living proof you’re only young once… but you can bs immature forever!!!!😝 One of the men he chased in NYC sued him. And he literally almost got his arse kicked/had to flee after the rodeo incident.
