Just finished the last episode of Devs. Such a captivating and thought provoking series. Quite mesmerising. So glad I stuck with it as it just got better and better. What a great interview with Alex Garland too.

Devs is like abstract art and Sci fi. It is also interesting that Westworld and Devs are on at the same time and both shows are struggling with a quantum type computer and Determinism.

I'm guessing, it's down to the fact that the major tech companies are heavily developing this level of technology (Google's Quantum AI as an example), that it naturally fits the narrative of both these shows and serves as a window into the possibilities that such technology will no doubt lead to. 🤔

This series literally changed my life. Areas of thought that are so often wall off because we are too uncomfortable thinking about them, and too uncertain about what our conclusions might be. For me the following lines were most significant. "The universe is deterministic. It's godless, and neutral, and defined only by physical laws."
@vash47

the universe is not deterministic tho. that's nonsense. quantum mechanics themselves debunk the idea of determinism

Devs is beautifully filmed and a joy to watch, with the plot unfolding at an accelerating pace and so many questions left to answer. Is the future predictable with enough terabytes? Is Pete The Homeless Guy a spy? Is Katie OK or is she an evil corporate hack? I gotta know.

How does their consciousness transfer into the simulator?
@autumnaticfly2965
@autumnaticfly2965 4 жыл бұрын
I think the show does imply that in truth it isn't their consciousness that is uploaded into the simulator, rather the simulator "recreates" their consciousness by the data it's gathered throughout prediction algorithms. That's the way I see it. The machine is like a projector, it doesn't create the movie only shows it.

I appreciate the insight from the series' creator, but isnt a lot of the science he's discussing still in the realm of philosophy ? 'The quote popularly attributed to physicist Richard Feynman is probably apocryphal, but still true: if you think you understand quantum mechanics, then you don't' kinda sums up what I'm getting at. I get that yesterday's sci-fi is tomorrow's reality - just not sure that some of the concepts being discussed here are within the grasp of mere mortals like myself, so I'll just sit back and enjoy the story without asking myself how CERN didnt blow up the entire planet :D

I didn’t like much of the early part of the first episode and may have given up had it not been written by Alex Garland so I stuck with it purely because of how much I enjoyed The Coma. So maybe I don’t always give TV shows enough time. I gave up on Game of Thrones after 2 episodes whereas I gave Batwoman about 10 minutes so sometimes I do get it right and sometimes I get it wrong and not following Devs through would have been a mistake.
