Excellent fix. Saved a 20v, 4.0Ah triton battery that now costs $100. Pay close attention to the "just a second." I did it longer and nearly overheated the battery. Looked at other fixes; don't have a 20v controlled power supply. Using the other battery (carefully) is just one of those head-slapping, why-didn't-I-think-of-that ideas. Careful with the polarity, just a second, and don't let your batteries get completely drained. Thanks, BTB!

Thanks for posting this! When I realised just a tiny power boost might trigger the battery enough, I tried this- I put it on my 3/8 impact driver and spun it by hand for about 10 seconds. In theory this would put charge into the battery. It worked! Put it on the charger and the light came right on.

Success!!! After hooking up the wires I pressed the battery indicator button on the “Bad” battery and got One bar. So I knew I had a positive connection. Also... i used an old 1.5 amp LI to fix a 6 amp XR And I can also confirm that the battery went “bad” after being left in a tool for 10 days. Now we have all left batteries in tools for months and never had a problem, haven’t we? In this case it was a Dewalt Leaf Blower that caused the issue. So I will know not to leave batteries in that tool Thanks for your video!!!

C R - awesome, glad I could help!! The failure to charge is the result of an overly discharged battery pack - this results from: 1) The charge drops too low for the dewalt charger to recognize the battery pack, which my video helps show you how to solve I’ve found through trial and error: A) keep my batteries charged before storage, and B) separate the battery from the tool when storing or transporting - ever since I’ve done that I haven’t had a battery fully discharge and refusing to charge 2) the second reason a battery drains below charger recognition is due to a failed cell(s) within the battery pack that then drains the other cells - unfortunately my video won’t correct this issue (it might temporally, but the battery pack will discharge rapidly again) ~ if this occurs, obviously use your warranty if available - if you don’t have a warranty option then, athough it’s not my video, here’s a video I recommend that shows you how to rebuild the battery pack (thereby replacing a damaged/failed cell/cells) : kzbin.info/www/bejne/aavLgKOdj7Wir5o

Some perspective from someone who flies large scale RC helicopters and has been working with high performance, high capacity LiPo batteries for several years. The DeWalt batteries have an over discharge protection circuit built in. If the battery is discharged beyond a certain voltage, the DeWalt system will not allow you to charge the battery. Your fix is circumventing that circuit by directly adding charge to the battery, lifting the charge above the low charge threshold. You really are jump starting the damaged battery, and it really does work. The reason the battery is warm to the touch when charging is because the battery is damaged; Discharging a LiPo battery too much damages the battery. In a car battery (lead acid), after 2-3 discharges, the battery will no longer have the amps (torque) needed to start the car. In damaged LiPo batteries, the batteries get hot and puff (literally get bigger) when charged and discharged. The battery will not have as many amps (torque), the individual battery cells will have a higher internal resistance, and the battery pack will get hot when you use it. For batteries in hard cases, this puffing could lead to a battery puncture and fire. This is why the protection circuit exists in these batteries. I'm not saying "don't do this" (we all want to save money); I'm saying 1) Do not over discharge your batteries, 2) if you do this, be extra careful with the batteries you have done this to, because they will be prone to puffing and eventual rupture and fire, and 3) batteries that are over-discharged will not have the same punch as batteries that have not been abused. Reminder this is the same battery type used in Sony laptops, Samsung phones, and the Boeing 787 Dreamliner; these batteries absolutely will catch fire if abused. Do not over-discharge your batteries. It's the internet; believe what you want. I'm not product bashing, I have no incentive to mislead you, and my message is caution and safety and please don't burn your house down. Good luck! :o) Related searches: - "Tareq Alsaadi Goblin" for big LiPo batteries in high performance RC heli flight - "lipo nail" for what a LiPo fire looks like - "lipo fire house" for the worst case scenario Nerdy stuff: - LiPo batteries are made up of individual LiPo cells - Based on the number of connectors (main + x1, main - x1, balance - x1, balance + x5 = 8 leads), this is a 5 cell LiPo pack (if you opened up the battery, you would find 5 individual cells) - Those extra leads are for balance charging. The charger will (or "should") charge or discharge each LiPo cell independently - When fully charged, each LiPo cell should read 4.20v, and the whole battery pack will read 21v - Storage voltage for optimal battery life is 3.86v per cell, or 19.3v for the whole pack - Really don't want to go beyond 3.74v per cell when discharging, or battery life will be shortened, the battery will lose punch (amps), and the battery will start to puff and get hot when used - LiPo batteries absolutely do not last forever, even in optimal use circumstances

ImTimay2 - love your comments - and totally agree on almost every point, My complaint lies in the design from the Dewalt system - excessive battery discharge does occur in some of their tools (by design or rather lack of design) and the circuitry designed to prevent the excessive discharging fails to preform effectively, thereby rendering the battery useless - I’m proposing a potential bridge solution, vs just discarding and replacing the battery - I agree with you that that there are potential negative side effects, I also believe we shouldn’t have excessive waste, disposing of batteries that still have plenty of use left in them

Came to KZbin looking for ideas and found this solution that absolutely worked for me. I can’t confirm whether the battery is still as good as it was new, but its a small battery I keep on hand as a spare or to run in my oscillating multi-tool for short spurts. Glad I could help!

Another THANK YOU, this time from Abbotsford BC Canada. I left a 5AH battery in my blower, and a week or so later it was totally discharged and would not take a charge. Your fix worked perfectly and saved me from having to purchase a new battery. So again, thank you very much for a very helpful video.

That you so much! I was pissed my brand new 5AH battery would do anything. I am still very disappointed with DeWalt for not making a fix for this before putting it to market. They knew about this problem for sure, two of my batteries had this same problem. The fix would have been easy to integrate into the changer.

It’s not a Dewalt problem. The problem is with your supplier keeping there Dewalt tools stocked for way too long. Batteries self discharge if left on a shelf for too long, to the point that the charger doesn’t recognize when a battery is out on.
@echochildus2441

these lithium batteries chargers will not charge a battery that has been fully discharged. This because when the lithium batteries get below a certain charge level they become unstable . by lifting the charge above that level you fooled the battery charger into thinking the battery had not been fully discharged.

Thanks man. I have a 40v DEWALT trimmer battery that wouldn’t charge after the winter. This is a $150 battery but thankfully DEWALT sent me one under warranty. I had only charged this battery 3 times since bought new. So I knew the battery wasn’t bad, so while searching for ways to possibly fix it I saw your video. Worked perfectly. It’s charging as I speak. Now I have 2 batteries for 2 1/2 hours of solid mowing time. Thank you again.

Paul - glad to hear it, if the battery was over discharged this tip/trick will boost it enough for the charger to recognize it - I now store and transport my batteries off of the tool to minimize this issue But on rare occasions it can also be caused by a failed internal cell (one of the single cells within the battery fails and the short drains the other cells) - in this instance it will charge and then rapidly discharge (watch for excessive heat during charging) - if this happens you have to warranty out the battery, or after warranty, replace the internal battery cells

FYI guys solid 12 awg is a bit too large to get into the holes. Yet I was able to take my Dykes and trim the end pieces long way to make it fit. If I was going to do it, I’d deft go with some solid 14 awg. Obviously if you have stranded you can make it work, just be careful with the small strands. It can deft shock you or dead short in another hole on the battery if you’re not careful. Thanks again man!

Thanks for the tip. Your video made me realize that this problem with Li-ion batteries is probably the same issue I have with NiMh rechargeable batteries -- I have a "smart" NiMH charger (one that does some pre-tests prior to charging) that sometimes refuses to charge low quality NiMHs. If I briefly put those batteries on a "dumb" charger (one that applies a charging voltage without any safety checks), then I can move them to the smart charger, and all is well. Your tip to jumpstart the dead battery with a charged one is creating the same effect. I bet there are some Chinese knock offs of the Dewalt charger that skip the tests that are causing the Dewalt to ignore the bad batteries which would be more convenient than using jumper wires.
