DEWALT 20V MAX Framing Nailer Review

Checking out the brushless DEWALT framing nail gun! This is a cordless tool we have been looking foreword to testing and reviewing, and now the time has come! We will give you a comparison to the pneumatic framing nailer that we usually use, and also give you the features, specs, and our opinion as pro builders about what we think.
My opinion after using it for a couple days... you could build an entire house with this nail gun! All you would need would be two five amp hour batteries on a rotating charge. It doesn’t have quite the firing rate that the pneumatic gun has, but I think I was actually more efficient overall due to the fact I could move so freely from one workspace to another without re-routing air lines. Also when framing walls flat on a floor surface, air lines tend to always be in the way, causing slow-downs.
My one dislike is that the 21 degree gun I was using had to be Re-loaded with nails more often due to the clip length of the Hitachi nails we were using. I couldn’t fit two full clips on top of the few the gun leaves to prevent dry firing.

I agree strongly with this review. I had always used pneumatic framers until almost 3 yrs ago when l got to try these Dewalt batt. framing guns. A real game changer. We are often at repair jobs. Water or fire or tree or whatever damage. No power ever at these. We use our little generator to charge the batteries. I was amazed at first but now sold on these guns. Sometimes a whack with the Stiletto is needed to drive her home but not that often. And the adjustment for depth for plywood is very good. I think l made my own review. I've had my dewalt nailgun for roughly 3 years, LOVE IT !!! i typically only do small jobs, Decks, garages, roofs. but last summer me and 3 friends framed a complete 1600sqft house using only 3 dewalt framing guns. zero issues ( sold my pasload gun after i bought the dewalt)

Hey guys, I have almost two years using this nail gun, let me tell you in a crawl space fixing floor joist, post or beams this is the best tool ever, obviously there is more maintenance required because the dust, but in confined spaces nothing better than this.

I have a very similar project coming up, installing wood posts to foundation beams, in the confines of a 2ft tall crawl space. When you said "this" I guess you meant the Dewalt electric? When you said "more maintenance required because of the dust", what did you mean?

Hello takla3210, about your first question definitely I’m recommending the Dewalt 20 V Max, for any confined space, and about your second question, is important to be conscious that pneumatic guns are blowing out the dust easily in the duties with 0 maintenance needed, either way I just recommend to use some wd40 and clean very well your Dewalt battery powered nail gun to assure longevity in the quality and performance.

I am a deck builder in Canada and have used the Dewalt 31 degree nail gun for 6 years. It’s a great nailer until you get to November/December and the temperature goes below freezing. It stops working at colder temps. So at that point the compressor, hose and pneumatic nail gun comes out of the trailer. The nail capacity on the cordless unit is less than that of the pneumatic guns. Not a bad gun though since it gives you more mobility around the job site which actually saves time and frustration. I self built our cottage this summer and used the Dewalt 30 degree nailer. Loved it. No issues. The only jams I had were into LVL, hitting steel plates, other nails or if I had the setting wrong (when switching out nail sizes), Maybe 10 jams all summer. My rating 10 outa 10

The Milwawkee is the goat in this game right now. Hands down. I have built two cabins and one house with mine so far and it’s flawless. Only complaint it the weight. It’s not light especially when working over head. The Current Dewalt needs updates, but I have no doubt their next version will be a contender.

Spot on- I am not a pro builder, but I have over 25 years of part time construction and home improvement under my belt. If i need speed and uninterrupted power- my Paslode 350 30degree with orange trigger is where its at. But for convenience, tight spaces and small jobs my Dewalt DCN692 is the right tool. Two nailers- same nails and both can get the job done.

I just got the Dewalt 30deg framer and 16ga angles trim nailer to replace the old Paslode fuel cell style I had for 15 years, I don’t use them very often but the fuel and cleaning were always a pain with the old Paslodes, I love the new Dewalts! No cleaning! No fuel to buy and they are quieter!

I have this nailer and I would recommend it. I do handyman work, sheds, siding, fences, decks etc.. I have not compared it to other cordless nailers or built a whole house with it, but it is super convenient and powerful enough for 95% of tasks. It doesn't like dealing with hard old-growth wood. I really think the maneuverability and low maintenance make it totally worth the investment. I became invested in the lineup of dewalt cordless nailers only because they were the easiest to find good second hand deals on when I first needed one, versus hitachi being less ubiquitous, and milwaukee is more expensive and did not have a framer until this year.

I had a pneumatic gun from harbor freight lended it to a friend that was remodeling a house. He used it till it quit he replaced it with another one from HB. I always wanted a battery powered one so i took the HB gun back and finally got the dewalt. I've been getting rid of the cord the hose and even the gas can and i do really like this framing gun.

I bought the Milwaukee M18 30° nailer a few months ago....it uses a compressed air cylinder that it charges to fire the nail instead of the flywheel like the DeWalt so you don't have that rev up sound. So far I have been digging it....wish it held more nails but they do sell an extended magazine to hold two full strips of nails. I run it on a 5ah battery and it lasts quite a while. Love the gun own two of them and use them everyday. The only things I would change is the belt clip, you have to really make sure its latched on your belt properly because it will fall, know this from experience and its not the cheapest tool to get fixed. Other then that the gun doesn't work well with cheap nails! Again great gun overall huge dewalt fan Cheers

I have the Dewalt one and I like it a lot. Got to see the Milwaukee one in action today and was very impressed. If I didn't have all Dewalt tools and batteries I might even say I'd go with that one.

I have a love hate relationship with my dewalt 20v framing gun. I love how portable it is, and the lack of needing an air hose or compressor. I don’t love having to finish setting nails. It does not like shooting into engineered lumber. That’s my main complaint and dislike with it. I have had mine for about 2 years, and haven’t had anything break, and i do use it everyday. i am am excited about the new Milwaukee framing nailer, looking forward to trying that one out.

Try the Senco Cordless Framing Nailer. FX35 P. It’s awesome. Drives nails into lvl and good all day on one battery.

Pneumatic nailers command respect, loud and capable. Cordless seems convenient. If I was a fulltime builder it would be a no brainer to have both.

I have the same gun and have similar issues with the nails bending over. I called the support number to inquire why this is happening and was told that it is definitely the nails causing the issue. I was told to use only dewalt nails to avoid the issue all together. It has helped.

I've had and used a 30 degree model since 1st release. Heavy and there is an occasional bent nail or miss fire. Doesn't like a weak battery but is my go to nailer.

The dewalt is great for repairs and maintenance. As far as framing a house maybe not. I have the dewalt and the Hitachi. The only nails I think work great with the dewalt are the paslode nails. Zero issues. I've used stanley nails and it kept gumming up the dewalt with paper and glue. Awesome review.

2.5 years and it operates same as when I got it. Houses, decks, fences... It can replace your air gun. The only thing I found it to be lacking with was actually building a fence, your arm will be ready to fall off after a day of nailing dog ears. Oh also, FOR SURE, this nailer works better with higher amphour batteries. I operate mine with a flexvolt and bump fire mode is smoother, more consistent. Try it.

Flexvolt did NOT help mine work any better. I finally gave up and got a milwaukee. The milwaukee has NEVER ONCE failed to fully set a nail...I've had it a couple years now.

I just picked up the dewalt 20volt 21degree framing nailer today... so far I freaking love it. Shot about 50 3 inch nails through it so far and am very happy. I own literally like every dewalt tool they offer so it was a must get. I hate the idea of dragging around a compressor and hose, so this will be my go to. Only con is the capacity for the 21degree. They should of made it to were it could hold 2 racks at a time but not a huge deal.

I'm an old school fool who still uses air tools but, I can see the benefits of running cord free for punch list, drywall & solid backing etc. My thought is, in the extreme cold of far northern Michigan's winters this might be a blessing for no freeze up like air tools tend too? I'm in the UK and most guys outside of workshops are using cordless / hoseless nailers. I switched to the Dewalt from the Paslode gas nailer. The gas was a pain with Paslode but in hindsight it's a better nailer, albeit much louder. The Paslode is lighter, more powerful and better balanced. Both perfectly capable though.

I work for an Amish framing company. We have a Dewalt 30°, a couple of Hitachi, and now a few M18 Milwaukee nailers. Those battery powered nailers simply do not have the same reliability or life expectancy as pneumatic nailers (my personal favorite is the Max SuperFramer but we mostly have Paselodes). So in the shop where we build panels we primarily use Pneumatic and almost all of the Battery powered nailers are dedicated to the road crew. I'm not on the road crew much but since we have so many I'm assuming the portability is worth the higher maintence cost.

I used a DeWalt cordless on helping a friend set roof trusses and sheet it. We did not have power on the job site. It worked well for framing. When it came to nailing off the sheeting, it tended to jam (bent nail as in your video and sometimes bent or double in the gun) especially at the end of a clip. I did pretty much burn one up, as I had it in bump mode and went like I would with a pneumatic. Overall, I think it has its place, but for high volume, rapid speed nailing like sheathing I would stick to the pneumatic. In cramped places or locations with lots of obstacles, the cordless is a winner.

I have this and the Milwaukee and prefer the Milwaukee but I use a lot of lsl's in my builds and needed the power you get from a Milwaukee that the dewalt didn't deliver but dewalt is still good for standard lumber-- Plus the Milwaukee has the magazine extension which is pretty badass also--

Got a cordless dewalt a couple months back. Not going back to pneumatic nailers. It shoots just a little slower but not messing with hoses makes up for that time lost. Plus I'll grab the dewalt where I normally wouldn't have set up a compressor and hose. Or if there is no power on site

Hey Eric I just finishes framing up a house with the cordless dewalt. Trust me its a great gun but after like 5 boxes of nails the return spring failed. Returned it to homedepot & same problem with gun # 2 after about the same # of nails. Bought the Milwaukee gun & it is more powerful & more consistent. Has a little more weight to it but love it. Give us a review after you run about 5 boxes thru it. Hope it gives you good service

Another good alternative to air is the Paslode XP cordless nailer. They use gas cells and a battery. They have the punch of pneumatic nailers without cords or hoses. I love mine.

It took a worksite break-in/theft to get us to buy the dewalt framing gun and it's just so practical since we already use their tools. It feels heavier than a paslode and batteries can be expensive, but I believe it definitely pays itself off with mobility. For an occasional framing job, it was a great purchase...but the plastic parts feel cheap and loading parts give me trouble and have me reload.

My great grandfather was a carpenter, homebuilder, and general contractor. He build a large number of homes around here. He never used power tools. He could sink framing nails with 1 shot of his hammer every time. Toward the end of his life, when power tools were starting to catch on, he had no interest. Stuck with braces, planes, his disston handsaws, and his hammer.

I have the 30 degree nailer...I love it...but then again I'm just a home owner and didn't want to carry around an air compressor for the times I'm working around the house or helping a friend out. I can attest to the nails also getting bent sometimes and then having to mess with clearing it out...but fir the most part, works as intended: mobile and quick!

Have the dcn692 and love it for the reasons you mentioned in the video but had a ton of issues with jams right out of the box. It was okay with 16s but terrible shooting 8s, I ended up using some dry lube (teflon based) in the driver channel and it was night and day difference. The gun says no oil but I was ready to throw it in the ditch so I figured last effort and now it's amazing.

Finally, I've been wondering why you guys always use the compressor. Honestly, it seems like people in Aus / NZ have been using cordless nail guns for ages... I was wondering why you guys would still use the airhose. Scott Brown carpenty from NZ has reviewed an interesting cordless nail gun called the airbow - check it out! Its essentially a portable air tank you recharge, attached to a nailer. Power of pnematic, no hose!

Bought my 20v dewalt 21 framing nailer almost a year ago. Certainly wouldn't frame a house with it but it's great for smaller jobs or when working up on a ladder or scaffolding. It has its limitations and is at times finicky, but all around it's a great cordless framing nailer. I was using it today for a smaller job and it was nice not to have to drag a compressor around, find a place to plug it in and deal with a hose! My only real complaint is that the rafter hook is pretty much useless. I've dropped it a few times, BUT it's survived!

I have the Milwakita framing nailer (Milwaukee nailer with a Makita battery adapter). Never used my pneumatic framing nailer, always used screws. After doing a small set of stairs/ landing with the nailer instead of screws, I'll go for the nailer every time from now on.

I got one of these nailers from my brother in law after he wore it out. I replaced the driving profile and return springs and it works like new. Not as powerful as the new milwaukee but it sure is quiet compared to air or gas nailers

I have been owning a couple dewalt battery finish nailers for years. They work great. But for my workhorse stuff I still drag a hose. Its hard to top my hitachi that shoots 4” ringshanks all day long.

I have the dewalt you probably just bought. I love it, but it will not repace a pneumatic. I am a GC, I don't build houses, but I use mine enough to say you'll be happy. It does have a few shortcomings. It doesn't like really hard stuff, like smart board, that's why it bent those nails. And it is slower than the pheumatic, but you'll adjust to that immediately. If you run it nonstop, you hear the flywheel start to slow down, while the gun gets hot. The finish up: I often find I grab mine for large projects, like sheeting a roof, thinking I will get the pheumatic later, then end up finishing the whole job with the DeWalt. It's good

Not sure if you get the same offers near you, but i bought the nail guns as bare units and picked up dewalt drills and impact drivers on offer with 2 5ah batteries (plus charger) for £150 (1 5ah battery is at least £60). You can end up with extra tools for guys to use or spares. It is def. cheaper way to get more batteries in Uk anyway.

I have the 30 degree cordless. And I find the time I save in set up and not having to re route hose is huge. Sure thy aren’t as fast as the pneumatic. But I feel, for example doing deficiencies, or interior framing, or roof. So most of the framing stage. The time I save not having a hose, still makes me faster, even though the bump fire is not as fast.

I've had 2 of the 20 volt dewalts. The newer one has a couple differences and is a little better than the older one. I also have the 30 degree. But the best battery powered nailer is definitely the metabo. Heavier but it thumps.

perfect point you made for the battery gun...going around different places like in attics, closets etc...checking spots or doing little repairs... maybe only 10-20 nails needed... makes no sense to setup air gun for small jobs if you have this in your truck..

I have a Dewalt framing nailer and the nail bending situation Has happened as well. I found that at max setting the Dewalt nailer sometimes doesn’t sink nails all the way. I bought the Milwaukee framing nailer and have not had the nails bend and no matter the wood or situation will sink every nail. I would say the Dewalt framing nailer is good but Milwaukee framing nailer comes out ahead.

I know you are on the dewalt battery platform, but a lot of people say that the Milwaukee and the Metabo HPT (hitachi) guns are better because they bump fire faster and don’t make that annoying humming that the dewalt makes because of the flywheel. All great guns though!

I would be surprised if any of the top brands would not finish a job and pay itself off in the investment into their battery platforms. I've never had a severe issue with Dewalt as it was introduced for me a decade ago, it was the safest choice in my head but those Milwaukee tools look slick. At the end of the day it's about how much you want to pay because they will all perform sufficiently to each other top brand.

In Canada in winter it is freezing cold. The pneumatic nailers eventually freeze up and break. Framers I know have a trailer full of backup guns. The electric nailers will dramatically change that.

U should check out the hitatchi (metabo hpt) and the milwaukee battery framing nailer if ur impressed with the dewalt those 2 r on a whole nother level

I got all 3 curious to see how long the hikoki and Milwaukee last before needing to be charged, the dewalt seams to be more maintenance free cam just by the spring kit off the shelf

Hi guys, I have been using the Dewalt nailer now for over two years. It is a superb piece of equipment. If your going to be nailing all day it’s probably best to have a battery station set up on the job site. Another thing I found, the Dewalt gun does not like Paslode collated nails. I prefer Senco nails they tend not to bend or get jammed. Keep up the videos guys love watching you and keep safe Paul from NZ.

I agree with the new dewalt for roofs. In germay we use stapler. And we have almost Dimension 6cm x xcm. So nailguns with 130-160 mm. And a DCN692 P2 5ah 2 Akkus 1100$

In air nailer you have carry the weight of the hose also. If working high it might be quite much.

I have a framing nailer and it survived a 16' drop man was i scared but it held together well just the battery flew off thank God that all that happened built a 60x50 work shop. Its worth it with especially with the 5ah batteries

I have the same nail gun, went with the 21 degree vs 30 for the full headed nail and because the plastic collated/21 degree type are noticeably less cost vs paper. Taking the limitations into account vs not having an air hose and all the support equipment to make compressed air its about a wash. Dewalt/Stanley got it close but they totally dropped it on the whole magazine size. It should have been sized to hold one full strip plus a couple more so when the dryfire lockout comes into effect its easy enough to drop in a new strip and keep going. The plastic collated nails come 25/strip normally and they advertise it will hold 49 nails... Which it will not physically do anyways. More like 35-40 depending on the exact nail your using. As well all the debris from the plastic collation makes another mess of trash to sweep up.

I've had both brands plus the air powered nailers and I'd have to say dewalt Cordless is a great tool for the jobsite. Passload makes a cordless one also but the big takeaway for me is it runs on battery and gas which if you don't use the gun daily the gas leaks out overtime and then you have to buy another gas cartridge.

Use to keep my old framer and compressor in the trailer. Then I just bought two more of the cordless Dewalt a and never looked back. You’ll eventually switch completely the drawbacks are no where near the gains.

I love it. If I could change anything it would be the way u load the nails. You have to pull it till it locks then load your nails and then unlock it to slide and hold the nails. overall it works, I think its worth the money. I wouldn't use it every day. I like using it early in the morning or late evening so the neighbors don't cry about the air compressor noise.

From using both the Hitachi framing nailer to the Dewalt cordless framing nailer there's a HUGE difference in weight. not sure if that paslode is just really heavy or something but its extremely noticeable even in comparison to gas paslodes

only pro of the dewalt in my eyes is not buying gas. but what you don't pay in gas, you'll pay for with your body, especially if your working above your head at all

It's i good nailer to have when going up high and it's nice not drag a hose and compressor ! but still prefer my Hitachi for volume ! But I love Dewalt tools !

I have one but it bends the nails just like what happened to you... I love it because it’s cordless but I am about to buy the Milwaukee nailer... from what I hear there is no comparison between the DEWALT and Milwaukee. Apparently the Milwaukee is a beast 🤷‍♂️

We bought both the DEWALT siding cordless and the dealt framing cordless for the reasons you stated. After about a month of regular use, they jammed more than they worked and I took them back for a refund. I’d love to try the Milwaukee cordless framer but I don’t own any other Milwaukee cordless tools, so there’s a battery issue. Love the videos, but I’m not sold on the DEWALT cordless nailers. FYI, 99% of our tools are DEWALT so it pains me to write this.

I have the Dewalt battery nailer, and it is really finicky. I had the same problem with ring shank nails. Definitely not for production framing. But it's so nice when you don't have to get the compressor out for small framing jobs.

Dude im 60 and when you were a kid they had pneumatic guns. I prefer thw paslode frame master 100. But also hate air hoses especially in winter. I also use it for small jobs or tight spaces but if there is room like you got there i still with the paslode pneumatic. Wish i hadn't sold my has guns (paslode) so quickly

Used them all, still like the hose-less paslode. I think it’s because the ergonomic grip and weight. Yes they use fuel cells and yes they need cleaning but for me it’s still worth it.

Yup, I think you nailed it. A good tool to supplement, but not replace, the current standby. Since you're already using a Paslode nailer, have you ever tried any of their gas-powered models? Those seem like they might provide a good middle ground for big projects.

I’m still waiting for battery technology to improve even further before going cordless. I just feel like I can still be ahead with my pneumatic nailers, in several situations I like to fire them off pretty quick, especially when sheathing things off

I must have bought a faulty one, because it would drive a nail no more than half its length then jam every 4. I'll stick to air. Only Dewalt I have are the impact drills.

Mine does the same. Its 4 years old but i havent shot a full clip of nails because all the 10 nails ive shot failed. Almost all my tools are dewalt so i tought this was a good buy because of the battery platform. Cost me almost 1000 dollars.

The Milwaukee m18 30° is a beast. It is heavy though. I’ll probably stick with my NR90A for most things though cause it’s light and will drive anything

When you both did the "weight" tests, the DeWalt didn't have the battery in. Obviously, it can only be used when there IS a battery in it, so that would make it heavier.

Likewise, the air nailer cannot be used without the air hose attached, which would make it heavier as well ;)
