Metalwork Monday - Chop Saw Dust Collector + Chip Pan - Dewalt DW872 Multicutter.
In this episode of metalwork monday we are buildign a dust/chip collection manifold and collection pan for our chop saw. Tired of chips going all over the shop. This did help alot but. You coudl use this same approach with any wood mitre saw, compound sliding saw, or other metal cutting chop saw such as the evolution, milwaukee, or harbor freight.
You could use this for aluminum, steel, stainless steel, brass, copper or other metals.

My Evo saw needs this upgrade. The little chip tray in the back only catches about 1/3rd of the chips. I really like your off the table mount idea. I was thinking about making a narrow cart that raised the saw up to table height. So that way I could move it around when I need it. (My shop is only 20x60 so everything need to be on wheels) It's especially challenging when getting a delivery of full sticks, and the project you are working on is also in the way too!

I hear you man, most of my stuff is on wheels also, including the table the saw is mounted to. I made the chop saw so it's removable thinking some day I might have different things that would slip on and off those mounts on the end of the table, like the portaband, etc, but it's just too much of a hassle to move it, so it stays where it is, seems to work well there.

Man good idea I got the same saw and those chips get all in your socks and shoes and will leave tiny spurs in your feet, improving collection on cuttings is needed on these dry cut saws for sure . Gives me an idea to make a shop vac type of suction setup maybe some kinda metal/wood workers dust collector.

I think that's the biggest shortcoming of these saws is the chips don't really end up in the tray as intended. Might need to do both of those mods; the outfeed / stand and the chip collector. Nice job, Gary! TZ

I'm making a very similar device for my saw, but I think I am going to maybe fill the tray with a bit of water, or put some sort of fire resistant fabric in the tray to prevent the ricochets from bouncing out. I've tried several different ideas and the saw still makes a mess everywhere. Those little chips are just the wrong size that you can't ignore them like grinder dust, but they're small enough they're hard to clean up quickly.

Gary, nice build. You would need magic to collect all of the chips from that saw, but it looks like your design gets a good percentage. You asked last week about video format and now that you have posted a narrated video, I like this format as well as the non narrated sum it up at the end. Maybe a little bit of each??? One question, can you tell me the height of your fab block tables and your older weld bench? Just trying to get some ideas.

I really like just showing the work and a quick summary at the end, if i try to talk throughout it, its hard for me to not get carried away and start rambling. i edited a lot of it out, but still a lot in there lol. i will measure those tables in a little while and post back.

You may want to cover the tray and mak a small funnel from fine wire mesh screen to keep all the grit and chips from flying out. Great project

Try adding a magnet in a zip lock bag to the tray and it will catch even more of those sharp shards before they reach the floor (provided they are just regular steel).

You can get a heap of those shavings and sell it to some chinese place in china. Awesome idea! If any of the edges are sharp you an always use some door edge molding.

Excellent idea for the chip pan and the dust collector. :-) What cup and tungsten are you using?

Thanks Cecil. I was using a 3/32 2" lanthanide tungsten with the Furick pyrex cup. I think it's a #9

Looks good, seems like it catches most of the chips. As for the welding wire straightening try chucking the wire in a drill, clamp the other end, pull fairly tight and spin it up. Stainless is really sensitive to heat if you don't keep the travel speed up you will have problems. It also has a high coefficient of thermal expansion and poor thermal conductivity making it the distortion king.

Thanks Bill good tip on the wire straightening. There were times where I couldn't dab the rod because it was twisted in the wrong direction. Yea, I had this left over from another project, otherwise i would have never picked it, its a pain to work with.

Great idea,what are you welding with? I use my safety wire pliers to straiten mig wire.just cut lengths ,one end in a vise one in the pliers a little spin and surprisingly straight when finished.My work throws away alot of.045 mig wire,I never have to buy any..

Thanks for the tip, I will give that a try. The local welding stores here don't seem to carry .045, only .030 and .035. Pretty cool you can get that for free from your work! I am welding with a Eastwood/Chinese 200 amp AC/DC inverter machine. Not bad for what it is....

Doesn't the AHP have pulse? That's really the main feature I don't have that I wish I did. Thanks about the videos. You don't have to be camera savvy. Just use your phone. a lot of the camera angles in my videos are shot with my iPhone.

Nice band saw. Def slow the blade rotation for the stainless. For welding your radius cuts obviously you learned you needed the smaller wire. I would go with no wire but not just a boring fuse weld. You can easily make a fuse weld look great with ripples by simply pausing almost like you were using filler. This way you can keep your heat even lower but your travel speed is the same. Try it out.

nice! like everyone else I'll do this to my evolution saw, it's so messy. one thing I noticed about your welding, is that your torch angle is quite extreme, and that might be causing the arc to wander. just my 2 cents 😀

Yes I do cut angles. The way the fence mitre's for angles it swings away from the guard chute, but if it interferes its only held on with one bolt that can come off quickly

I chose stainless because I had that 2X4" stainless tube left over from another project, otherwise, i wouldn't have specifically chose that...

To help with the pie cuts pulling, weld the short sides of the channel first. tack the top first then butt it up against the table and you can put a little weight on it and then tack the bottom. Then weld the longer sides of the channel. I usually do tubing but channel would be easier since it has flat sides. Also to help with stainless i usually do 2/3 of an amp for every 1 thou of thickness. Looks like you were running a little hot not a big deal but makes your welds look a ton better with less heat and faster travel speed. good stuff keep it up

Actually I was running about what you just said. Had the foot pedal set on 90 amps, and was running 3/4. The heat was being put into it from moving too slow, at times i wasn't close enough and the puddle was really dragging, not really taking the filler, rod sticking at times, so that was slowing me down putting a lot of heat into it.

Hey Shaun, I didn't have good luck doing that. I tried putting a carbide blade on my old dealt abrasive saw and it worked for about 3 cuts and burned up the blade. This saw was designed to run the carbide blade. Look at the evolution carbide chop saw if your thinking about getting one

Shaun Williford Milwaukee makes a diamond grit blade made for an abrasive saw like urs. called the steelhead but there about 140$ a piece. just ordered one hoping to make chop saw more like a cold saw
