Did you test before you did a tear down? Might be the thing to do so you issues can't be attributed to taking it apart??
@MyFortressConstruction
@MyFortressConstruction 3 жыл бұрын
I thought that at the beginning, but I have taken a lot of tools apart and fixed a lot of tools and there should be no reason for the weird and random mis-start issue. It's not acting like a wire that's not making good contact and all of the wires in the unit are inside of wago lever nuts and soldered to boards. You would have to yank on them really hard to disconnect them. And if it had something to do with a wire having a poor connection (from me moving parts around) then it wouldn't be as "reliably unreliable" as it is. But without whacking it, jiggling it, or anything else that might realign a poor connection, it will turn back on just fine. Also, it's not like it doesn't do anything when I try to start it (which would be the case if a wire wasn't completing the circuit), it starts up and then kills itself as if it doesn't have enough battery to keep going. That points to the "brain" reaching a fault condition and turning itself off. Anyways, it could have been me, or be a lemon, or an actual problem that will start showing up with other people's mowers. We'll just have to wait and see I guess.

I believe your startup issue was the side safety switch that is supposed to pop out only when the handle is unfolded and locked upright. It can stick down, especially when there’s a bunch of grass wedged in there.
@MyFortressConstruction
@MyFortressConstruction Жыл бұрын
That's a good thought but I checked everything, including that switch. The tech that got it at the repair place said it was an unbalanced blade and that depending on rotation and vibration can cause it to shut off. However, I never tried running it without the blade so I only have his word to go off of.

Update from my last post. My mower has gone from doing okay to not running more than 10min max before getting too hot. At first I thought the batteries were dying too quickly but then found out the batteries still had two bars showing on them of three bars total, both 10ah hr and the motor would start up but then as soon as I lowered it to the grass it would just cut off. My mower is maybe 4-5months old and had not used it that often. I would recommend "Do Not Buy This Product" unless they figure out what is going on with this cheap build.
@MyFortressConstruction
@MyFortressConstruction 3 жыл бұрын
Hmmm... So you could see (the next time it does it) if removing the blade makes it run again. The tech told me that if the blade gets warped that it can sense the off-balanced blade and shut down. Not sure if the tech was just grasping at straws for why my mower was doing that, but you could always test that on yours. Hope yours is still under warranty!

Have had the self propelled for a few weeks now with the 12AH batteries. I absolutely love it! I will say though there are some parts I worry about lasting a long time like the self propelled throttle seems like wanky plastic that will eventually break. I'm sure it can be replaced but they should have made it better quality. The height adjustment is a little wanky too. As far as operation and cut though, I am very pleased!

Mine was stalling like that too even after a new blade. there are 4 screws on that bottom plate that mount the motor. 3 were broken off so motor was moving inside the housing. I had to remove the broken studs, replace the 4 bolts and that solved it. there was play in the drive shaft before now its solid. I also discovered after doing this it is quieter and the batteries last way longer. I suspect this was moving around and wasting energy before they broke off and started the stalling issues.

@MyFortressConstruction
@MyFortressConstruction 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, they have to be Dewalt batteries, either 20v or 60v will work since the 60v are backwards compatible. Depending on the size of your yard you will need at least two 5ah batteries, though a larger yard (>5,000 sq. ft.) will use two 9ah or greater capacity. I would actually recommend selling it if you don't already have Dewalt batteries and finding a brand you already have batteries for, or going with a more reliable brand such as Ego. You will find that the Dewalt batteries are very expensive and this mower is nothing special.

Interesting issues you have there, obviously some electrical sensor. Crazy thought, perhaps get a new blade? Is it possible that a out off balance blade can cause this issue. I service my blade twice a year and ever since I started doing that I’ve noticed a smoother running motor. Btw I’m still on gas, just now starting to look into Dewalt one. Same, initially I was kinda annoyed because it wasn’t what I wanted it to be. I started using it for my residential lawn jobs I’ve probably done at least 100 cuts in the last month including huge amounts of over grown grass over 2 ft tall. I can do residential lot front and back on one charge even wet and over grown and usually I’ll still have 2 bars on both batteries. If you hit something it has a lockout feature just like the chainsaw no damage just restarted and keep going. One downside is the thin blade with proprietary mount but it does cut great and easy to sharpen. People always comment on how nice the cut is. I should add mine is the self propelled and actually my second mower… the first one didn’t have any of the issues he talked about but it did leak gear oil.

I just used my brother's greenworks 60v mower (because I sent the DeWalt in) and it has more power and was able to do my entire yard on a 4ah battery and still have 2 bars left. He's been using it for a few months and likes it.

People would love a Milwaukee mower, but they haven't released one yet. Lol. I do want to ask you Lou why you're so pro DeWalt. You comment a lot on DeWalt videos and like to stomp Milwaukee. Personally, I like them and prefer them over most Milwaukee tools but they do have tools that could use some refining.

I bought this model for mowing. Same problem what you have. Start run, immediately died. No reason, I try 20times, might have one time work. This mower is the worst mower I ever had…. Waste money and time
@MyFortressConstruction
@MyFortressConstruction 3 жыл бұрын
Did it do that straight out of the box or after mowing a few times? The tech said with mine it might have been from a blade balance issue. You could try pulling the blade off and then running it without the blade and see if you get it to stall. They didn't have any replacement blades so they just sent me a check and I bought the self-propelled version. It's been running fine so far.

Was given one of these with a missing blade. So I bought a blade adapter and Maxpower blade from Amazon and that blade isn't electric mower specific so the extra weight shakes the crap out of the mower. The bearings are probably too small and the ABS motor housing can't take the strain. With that blade I got 11 minutes of run time out of a 9 ah and 6ah Flexvolt battery. Worst Dewalt product ever.

Definitely not capable of using aftermarket blades it sounds like... Sometimes free is worse than buying something that will work as intended.

@@MyFortressConstruction I found the Dewalt blades today and bought one, but I can't find the blade adapter with the S-shaped hole anywhere. UPPDATE: MTD makes these mowers and if you put the model number into their site's search bar the parts come up. A blade adapter was 8 bucks (plus shipping). And for future interest Oregon sells a blade for $21 on Amazon that works for the Dewalt.

Huh... that’s a definitely odd thing that it’s starting and stopping. I have a very strong feeling that this was built by a different company and has the DeWalt name slapped onto it. Like porter cable. Who knows though. No idea.

Yeah, it seems like they cheaped out on the build. The 1st gen felt more substantial and well-built. It just had some really bad flaws.

It's an MTD clone. Cub Cadet, Troy-Bilt, etc. DeWalt is part of Stanley Black & Decker who now also owns MTD. It's pretty disappointing that they slapped the DeWalt name on this low end mower. Though it can be a good deal if you need 10ah batteries I guess.

@@plmn93 Which lawnmower is it cloned after specifically? Lots of companies have the same umbrella Corp over them so it wouldn't surprise me. The design of most cordless mowers is pretty similar though (brushless motor, direct drive blade).
@plmn93
@plmn93 3 жыл бұрын
@@MyFortressConstruction Not exactly a clone, I guess. The deck, sometimes with slightly different plastic, can be found on $240-400 Troy-Bilt and Cub Cadets. But even they have bigger rear wheels so DeWalt cheaped out there too. The handle looks like it is based on Cub Cadet. Cub Cadet's electric is totally different, it looks like it was designed from the ground up as electric, where as DeWalt just took a cheap gas deck and put an electric motor on it. At least it is priced that way too. It's good to see you realize this isn't up to DeWalt's usual standards, it's amazing how many reviewers make this out to be a high quality machine, that is obviously because they don't really know much about how good quality mowers are built and how they perform. Personally I have my eye on the new Toro Super Recycler, it's essentially an electric motor put on a high quality design that has been around for decades. I just wonder if it's worth the money, seeing as how cordless mowers are essentially disposable anyway due to battery lifespans and replacement cost.

Most gas motors also DO NOT have a pulley. You should actually look a a couple mower before you speak about incorrect facts.
@MyFortressConstruction
@MyFortressConstruction 7 ай бұрын
??? I don't recall saying that all mowers have a pulley. I think what I said was that if a mower has a belt system that if it hits something that force isn't directed to the motor directly and would just cause the belt to spin. Every ride on mower I have used, besides the battery Ryobi mowers, uses belts and pulleys. I'm still not sure why the gen 1 DeWalt had a pulley seeing as it was an obvious weak link.
