Im a Joiner/carpenter for 14 years and always used/only owned DeWalt Tools I’ve had my current Planer 5 year and still going being used on a Daily basis. Only problem I’ve had is the clogging, especially with a Dust Bag attachment. It’s a nightmare. I used the Makita Planer once from a Guy on a Project with me years back and always said it’s the more superior Planer. So I think I’m going to invest in it now lol. I never noticed the rebate part what you pointed out. That is a great feature!

I live in the states and had the chance to use the Dewalt for 3 years and it's a great planer. I purchased the Makita brushed 18v at my local retailer Home Depot because they had a promotion going on at that time for $70 I couldn't pass up that deal since I am in the makita platform also it's also a great planer and surprisingly has a lot of power for a brushed version I love them both.

Basically what you have here is what you'd call a scrub plane in hand tool working. I made a scrub plane for exactly what you're talking about, quickly removing material, then I pick up my smoother to clean up the surface. Construction is a very different beast to other types of woodworking that's for sure. I also use a carpenters axe a lot of removing wood fast. Great video!

I still have my Bosch corded planer from over 20 years ago and it works just fine. I have both Makita and Milwaukee 18v cordless tools so if and when I upgrade I’m definitely going for the Makita. It’s clearly the best option here. Heavier is probably because of better quality too on the Makita.

Great review. I am on the Makita 18v platform so looks like I have found my next purchase. Though admittedly I still prefer to use my 20+ year old Makita 240v planer when I have a power socket nearby, as it is still a rocket! Can't beat the old makita Made in Japan quality.

I used this Makita one to strip finish from my doors when remodeling. 0.1-0.3 cut. Did a very good job and time + sandpaper saved payed for the tool. 5 heavy oak doors, no problem at all. I did put a small nick in one of the blades from a nail somewhere in the door. There's a bit of a learning curve to avoid the snipe and gouging from that deep side cutting ability. I have since stripped a few tables I restored. Before I had this I would have spent hours with the belt sander and boxes of belts to get the stuff off, with this you can do a big table with 1-2 batteries and you get a really nice finish. I've seen people build jigs for this to use as a jointer. I might try that.

It has felt to me over the past few years that DeWalt has been skimping on quality more and more. I really hesitate to get into that brand now (although clearly in this case, Milwaukee was the loser on power). Recently bought a DeWalt square that wasn’t even close to square. They seem to be substituting more and more plastic and just cutting more and more corners.

The makita aws is awesome, and the first thing I did was remove the rear blade saver thingo. Unscrews pretty easily. One problem is the blade setting wasn’t correct from factory. Also the knob for the depth wasn’t set to zero. Infact it still isn’t after the makita service centre had a go at it lol.

This video has me feeling a bit sentimental, as the first video of yours I watched was on the Makita brushless planer vs the brushed. Oh, so long ago... Excellent video, per usual. I have the brushed makita and I'm happy with it. The price was right for me at the time. I do see myself uprading at some point to the brushless (or 40v when it comes out). I have an AWS vac coming tomorrow(!!!!). So I'm sure I'll want as many compatable tools as possible. Side note: In reading about Makita's history, I believe their first actual power tool WAS a power planer. So one would think they would lead the pack in this department. Anyway, cheers for the video!

"everybody uses these tools on different ways" No truer words were ever spoken. The number of disagreements that begin with someone assuming that everyone does, uses, believes the same things in the same way,. I can't grasp how that trend in belief has become so prevalent. Thanks for a great review. I own the DeWalt and like it just fine, but I had heard that the Makita was superior. Now I know why, and all of your points are solid. The rebate, the dust port, the max depth of cut, all winning features. I wish I had seen this before I made my purchase. I might just end up with both with the Makita running off a dewalt battery adapter.

I have the brushed Makita, but this makes me want to get the brushless. You sir are no good for my pocket book! One point I'd say is unless you replaced the blades, the Makita was hamstrung a bit because you've used the tool much more than the new ones. Not that it mattered. :)

Festool make a corded 240v and 110v one handed Planer the EHL 65 EQ plus with a 4mm planing depth and 23mm rebate depth. Its not cordless but it is very compact, hence the title of being a one handed planer, I haven't used it myself, but its apparently very accurate compared to most planers, and lots of furniture and kitchen fitters use it for scribe work. There is an older bigger model the HL 850 but its not on the festool site anymore so I presume the 850 has been discontinued. I own the Dewalt and can confirm its got plenty of power and it feels great in the hand, not too heavy, really well balanced and typical of Dewalt great ergonomics . Ive got several Milwaukee tools but I cant believe Milwaukee still haven't got a brushless planer. Before releasing anymore new niche tools like tire buffers and the like, they really need to update all their older tools, which still haven't got brushless motors, like their planer and rotary tool ect ect

They still sell the HL850 (probably not many). I know someone who got it a few years back and if he ever turns around and sells it, he’ll easily make a 300% profit. 😳 Virutex have an uncanny range of planers. That’s all I know, I hate the damn things. The larger timber framing specific ones I can appreciate and the specialty ones (like HL850) with shaped cutters and wire brushes as well.
@rocketmunkey1
@rocketmunkey1 2 жыл бұрын
@@robertrada4783 You can definitely still get it via retailers who still have it in stock, but Festool themselves no longer have it on their web site, its just the EHL 65 on there now. hope they do a cordless version at some point. although the 4mm cutting depth might be a bit hard to achieve. Some of Festools cordless products are a little on the underpowered side, although more than powerful enough for precision work, but their build quality and innovation is second to none, I have the HKC 55 circular saw and love it, its a little bit underpowered and cutting depth could be a touch deeper, but the features and usability are way beyond what most saws offer.

@@rocketmunkey1 That’s wild. They haven’t discontinued the HL 850 here (maybe they will soon). Meanwhile, they never brought either 65 machine here (I forgot what was different with the newer one). When they discontinued the CMS everywhere, they kept it here, too (although we were only provided plates for the of1010 and of1400).

@@robertrada4783 I'm in the UK and its not on the festool UK website anymore, They only just recently removed it because it was still there a couple of months back, but when I checked their website to get the exact model numbers for my post, its not there anymore, when you look under planing in the drop down. It could just be a glitch on their website perhaps ? The 65 is a very compact one handed plainer, its a lot smaller than the 850 and doesn't have the forward handle like the 850 does, Also having checked the plaining depth on the 850 it only goes up to 3.5mm where as the 65 is 4mm, So it doesn't really offer anything that I know of above and beyond what the much lighter and easier to use 65 does.

I was on dewalt for years and recently picked up some Makita batteries after deciding to buy their cordless router and I'll most likely be buying this Makita planer. I found most reviewers are usually chosing between DeWalt or Makita so it was a no-brainer to have both battery systems.

You can get battery adapters for just about any brand of battery to any brand of tool. The downside is it does cause the battery to stick out a bit, and depending on the type of tool this could affect ergonomics.

The first electric hand planer was the Skil 100, in 1949. Makita was the first in Japan, in 1958, and yes it was the first power tool they made.

Makita does seem to win this competition easily. Too bad with cordless tools you kind of have to stick with one or two brands, otherwise the batteries and chargers start to spiral out of control. So if you already have other branded cordless tools, it's pretty hard to justify a new set of batteries for a single tool.

I bought a plastic adapter shoe that lets me run Dewalt 20v batteries in my makita 18v tools. The adapter cost about 20$, been using it for years, it works like a champ. Only down side is it adds an inch or so to how the battery sticks out.
