I also noticed what a great leader he was. This guy was always mentally prepared for every play, just as he recounted in this video. Also, he played hard, he played intense. While everyone else was hanging their head after the heartbreaking loss in Game 6 in 1986, Dwight Evans was like F* that, we have a Game 7. If the whole team in 1986 was a bunch of Dwight Evans (mentally), then that 1986 team would have won the world series.

N.Y. YANKEES fan here and have been since 1961, the year of the M & M Boys, Mantle and Maris. Dewey Evans for me is one of the 3 greatest right fielders I ever saw play the position with the other two being Al Kaline and Roberto Clemente. And Evans put up very good offensive numbers to go along with his great glove. If Harold Baines, a very steady baseball player who was just voted into the HoF this year 2019, is a Hall of Famer, then Evans should have been in years ago. On a side note .... my first trip ever to Fenway Park in the Spring of 1974 in a day game against my Yanks I saw Dewey throw out a very smart ballplayer and baserunner, Roy White, going first to third on a single to right field, and a few innings later Evans threw White out again this time going from 2nd to home. I was sitting with friends on the third base side and was standing up screaming NO - NO - NO as White motored to home. What an exhibition by Evans. The final in that game was like 12 - 10 Boston. A typical see saw, no lead is safe ballgame between those two teams back when.

You know your baseball! And as a lifelong Red Sox fan, I must acknowledge Joe DiMaggio as being one of the top 3 center fielders of all time. And I can only imagine how much greater Mantle would have been without all those unfortunate knee problems.

@@kvernon1.... aging Baby Boomer here ... Mantle was every Little Leaguers idol Baby v k in the 50s & 60s. And your absolutely right about his knees. Both of his knees were bad. When he first came up in 1951 he was, according to all the smart baseball people, the fastest player going from home to first base. I once saw him beat out a routine ground ball to 2nd. He had power, speed, a strong arm, and he hit over .300 over a dozen times in his 18 year career. A healthy Mick would have been good for at least another 100 Homer's. There's a great KZbin clip of Mickey Mantle day at what was the real Yankee Stadium. The fans showed Mick how they felt about him. I highly recommend it. The great Mel Allen emceed it and DiMaggio was of course there along with many of Mickey's former teammates. Check it out.

The Yankees played only one day game at Fenway in 1974, on July 28. White only had one plate appearance, as a pinch hitter, and went 0 for 1. The Red Sox won 8-3. The Yankees played a day game on April 7, 1973 and in that game it was actually Roy White who threw out Dwight Evans. The Red Sox won 10-5. Maybe you’re (mis)remembering a day game at Fenway on April 23, 1975. Evans did throw White out at the plate and there was another outfield assist when Fred Lynn threw out Ron Blomberg. Those were the only two outfield assists. It was a see saw game. The Red Sox were ahead 1-0. The Yanks took a 2-1 lead, The Red Sox led 3-2, the Yankees led 7-3, the Red Sox led 8-7 and finally 11-7.

What a class dude, in addition to being a top shelf professional. I remember the very first time I ever saw him in action: It was spring training and he was a new rookie in camp. The TV announcer said something like " Here's a new young player named Dwight Evans... he seems to have excelled at every level he's play at so far." He stepped up to the plate for his first at bat, and hit a triple. I never forgot that. And he did continue to excel at every level.

I grew up in the ‘80s, and Dewey was my favorite player. He was great out in right field. With this particular catch, it’s worth noting that this would have been a no-doubt homer in most ballparks, and Dewey made it look easy. Many an inside the park home run has been hit to that exact spot. He was also the most productive hitter the Sox had through the ‘80s. He should be in the HOF. As small correction: Evans had 379 homers with the Sox, but 385 overall, after the unfortunate conclusion of his career in Baltimore.

But the HR by Perez wasn't the margin of victory. The game-winning run scored very late in the game when Joe Morgan hit a bloop single to center field off of Jim Burton (after which both agreed was a very good pitch). How ironic & maddening it was that the Red Sox held a 3-0 lead in the 7th game of both the 1975 and 1986 World Series ... and ultimately lost both games.

I remember Dewey Evans socking it to Righetti as well. I don't think I know of any comparison in baseball where a hitter has owned a pitcher so much. He was smart too. I read in a book (assuming the book is true) that John MacNamara asked the opinions of the players when the Red Sox had a 2 run lead and looked on the verge of winning the World Series in 1986. Mc wanted to keep Buckner out there on the field to celebrate but Dwight Evans said something to the effect of "We've had this winning formula of putting in Dave Stapleton at 1st in the late innings when protecting a lead. Why change? Buckner can run out of the dugout to celebrate."
@Milordvega7 жыл бұрын

I'm surprised he doesn't get more Hall of Fame consideration. He was a mediocre offensive player in the 70's, but was also the best defensive outfielder of the 70's. Dwight Evans' offensive output - a high career OBP and almost 400 homers - combined with 8 Gold Gloves - clearly qualify him for Hall of Fame. Unfortunately, he had a highly unusual career - his best 10 years were the second rather than the first ten. Opinions of him were formed, and hardened, early on when he was mediocre at the plate. Even when he was tearing it up post 1980, he rarely made the All Star team. An old timers committee might see through this some day, but I doubt it.
