Beach City is changing now thanks to the recent events. Lars is no longer around; everyone is more aware of Gem-related occurrences; Nanefua is the new mayor; and Sadie quit her job at the Big Doughnut. It's nice to see that the humans are starting to be affected by Homeworld's actions.

Sadie throwing herself into her work is not unusual for someone dealing with grief. Its quite common, actually. She was working so to maintain what little sense of normality she as, and not want to confront her own pain, but she is caught between working at the place that reminds her of Lars, and to be unemployed and have all the time to dwell on Lars. She needs friends for moral support to get through this. You see Ian Jones-Quartey in the crowd as Nanefua Pizza was based on Theodosia Okoh, who in Ian's grandmother. She is a national icon of the Republic of Ghana who designed their national flag. I highly recommend looking her up, she quite an inspirational woman.

I see a decent number of comments talking about how these episodes were such a waste because they didn't progress the plot, only character. And wow. Nothing could be further from the truth. In *Dewey Wins*, Steven and Connie have their falling out. He's oblivious to the fact that she feels betrayed, and couldn't conceive it when she was upset with him. But the real set up here is Nana Fua becoming the next mayor of Beach City. If homeworld comes knocking on the door, they'll very likely visit Beach City first-- and if they come armed or seeking violence or anybody in particular, Beach City won't have the same response as it did under Mayor Dewey. *In case you missed that, next time Homeworld comes to Beach City, Nana Fua's plan is to have more people prepared for this to happen again, for the people to be more responsible for the people.* In *Gemcation*, Garnet tries to open up about the events with Pink Diamond and the war, and Pearl almost said something that, I'm assuming, is a set-up to the coming 'mystery solving: who shattered Pink Diamond' arc. Lapis completely abandons Peridot, Steven, and the Earth in an attempt to stay away from the Diamonds in *Raising the Barn*. In *Back to the Kindergarten*, it's established that dead Earth can't regrow or sustain plant life, even with such careful and meticulous work Peridot is known for. We don't know what the direct consequences will be with the *Sadie Killer* episode, but it could have some direct ramifications for the plot. For one, if forming a band means they'll begin touring and be out of town, they might all be absent for another abduction sort of episode, or any confrontation from Homeworld. There's other minor things, but I feel this is the most significant effect from this episode. And finally, *Kevin Party*. Steven, Connie, and Lion are reunited and could be ready to take on anything! Which is refreshing, but is an important set up for future episodes. I think I explained myself pretty well here, but now I'm just gonna rant for a minute XD Character development is just as essential, if not MORE important than plot progression. If we didn't know and love the characters, any plot that happens wouldn't feel like they had stakes. It would just be, "and then PEOPLE GET ABDUCTED!" and "OH NO LARS COULD DIIIIIEEEEEE!!!!!" or something, and it wouldn't MEAN anything. Seeing the characters behave like growing, learning people makes you care about their struggles and existence in the midst of the story (otherwise known as plot). That's why Steven Universe is so special and amazing. Even with episodes most people would consider 'filler', the episodes were still wholesome, and each character had compelling personal struggles and arcs. Dewey lost. Sadie and the Barrigas were distraught by losing Lars and were pained by his absence. The Cool Kids didn't really say anything about Lars, but their agreement in a darker and more personal 'sound' for their band says a lot about their states of mind. Kevin is still a jerk, but one with real emotions, and he knows he's not infallible, which opens up his character waayyyy more. Lapis chose to run, whereas Peridot chose to stay. Pumpkin stayed too (where is pumpkin now, by the way??????). The gems are traumatized, but are relieved Steven is back. They're worried, but are trying to de-stress together with Steven, because they know he's been through more than they have. And Steven, Connie, and Lion found common ground. That's a LOT for one hour of content. Every character had their moments. And one quick note on the trailers. I LOVE that Steven Universe's trailers have been pretty misleading with their editing, making it seem like there's going to be more focus *here* than *there*. But, when you watch it, it isn't as simple and cut-out as you thought it'd be. It subverts your expectations for that episode, delivering something different than what you prepared yourself for. I HATE watching trailers to shows, movies, etc that just flat-out REVEAL THE BIG TWIST in the trailer. For example, the recent Smurfs Movie, where the twist was explicitly tattled in the trailer. And one reviewer precisely predicted who the winner to Sing was going to be before the movie came out-- based on the trailer. I wish more franchises did what SU does with their trailers. *Mega-Rant Over*

SU feels like the plot goes, but in reality very little matter to the characters the events related to Homewolr, completely ignored by Steven being that all he had to do was to pay attention and ask questions (seriously it seemed like another debauchery with the fans that part in Gemcation) not that focusing on more human problems is bad but this system of wanting to be a slice of life and a space adventure ends up tiring me when the fantasy element turns so mundane that it is treated as if it did not affect anyone's life more than a misunderstanding . Lars will not be in any danger since he was spoiled and the way the citizens responded to abductions was as if Dewey had not built a fire hydrant that he Prometheus. how they want us to take this Homeworld threat seriously, and the Crytasl Gems do not get serious enough to do anything.

If Nanefua was supposedly so outraged by Dewey's inability to adequately protect the town and its residents from Homeworld depredation, then logically she would have agreed with Ronaldo's initial idea in Rising Tides, Crashing Skies and have the Gems expelled from Beach City. Some have contended that Nanefua represents Donald Trump and his brand of populism, with Dewey standing in for the "inevitable winner" Hillary Clinton; but this would be a good analogy only if Ronaldo was the one challenging Dewey. Besides, there's no way in hell that the Crewniverse would make Nanefua a shady character, especially considering how many (or most/all) of them feel about the current President.

You're missing the point of WHY Connie is upset. In fact, Dewey conceding is the parallel to Steven's decision - he just gave up. In Dewey's case, he didn't even give a rebuttal to Nana's stance - which I'm almost sure might be a reference to the 62 (?) presidential debates between Kennedy and Nixon - he just basically gave up and walked away, despite all the help Steven gave him. Same thing with Connie. What exactly was the purpose of her 1. learning to fight and 2. Steven's big speech to her about wanting to fight together and by each other's side? Steven didn't do that. No, let's try to get EVERYONE off the ship or let's distract Topaz and Aquamarine to get everyone off the ship. Steven just gave up the same way Major Dewey did. I honestly don't understand why people can't get that. *Nothing* about Steven's sacrifice did ANYTHING good. Nothing good came out about it, and as Slice mentions, Steven is doing the same thing(s) Rose did. However, I'm hoping this is all purposeful and at some point, Steven will decide he's NOT Rose and make decisions based on what STEVEN thinks (and will more thinking and not emotional knee jerk reactions that he usually does)

i thought it was kinda messed up that Steven just automatically took Dewey's side when Nanefua announced her campaign. Dewey has shown himself to be selfish and corrupt in the past (heck, even just the fact that he's been mayor for so long with no opponent is sketchy, as well as the fact that the mayoral position tends to be passed down generationally considering that it was Dewey's ancestor who founded the city), and Nanefua is clearly the better candidate.

Rose did do what she wanted. And that's where the Crystal Gems made their mistake: by letting her. And that's why Connie is so important. Rose was the leader of the Crystal Gems, so no one stood up to her decisions. But Connie isn't Steven's soldier and he isn't her leader. Their friends, equals. So Connie can be the one to tell him, "Yo man, you can't be doing that shit." Or something like that 😝 But seriously, no one ever stopped Rose from doing what she wanted, but Connie can do it with Steven. And this is one of the reason why I fucking love Connie. I always tear up when I re-watch the start of 'Dewy Wins'. Me and my best friend are just like this. He's like Connie: Smart, and caring. I'm more like steven: I'm kind, I have a tendacy to start singing at random, and really every other trait. Also, I was the one who started our first conversation, like steven. Anyway, The point is that I _never_ want what steven did to connie to happen to me and my friend. Now I don't mean that I don't want to get abducted then sent back home, ect, I mean that I don't want us to get into big enough fights that he doesn't want to talk to me. I barely get to see him anymore, since he's going to a new school. We still hang out on the weekends sometimes, but I realized that I really underestimated how hard these next few years were going to be. Anyway, thanks for reading!

That's a complicated question, because we are including one instance of (probable) time distortion with gem travel, when Steven and Lars were captured. Then there was the all-of-one-day it took for The Trial and running into hiding, then maybe a half a day to a day before Steven turned Lars into a TARDIS-zombie? We have at least, LEAST, one day of travel in the space ship, so that amounts to 3 days, by Steven time and by Lars time. Maybe one hour on the space ship translates to one day on Earth? Maybe it was a week to Connie, Sadie, and the gems, maybe two, maybe only a few days for them, too, but I'm not enough of a physicist to give you exact numbers, otherwise.

I think it's good for Steven (and for us) to have a bit without the crystal gems hovering right over and around him, let the 14 year old kid be a 14 year old kid for a couple days, he doesn't have to be a superhero all the time.

So Steven miraculously made it back from Homeworld after the very rash decision to turn himself in and face trial in front of a couple very large, very powerful, very angry intergalactic tyrants for a crime that he/his mother probably didn’t even commit. He had no backup, except for one human which wasn’t supposed to be there and that technically was very much killed. Sure, he brought Lars back to life, but that was completely by chance. And Steven reacts predictably like himself. Everything’s great! Everything’s fine! He made it back, Lars is alive-ish, he’s galavanting around space with a group of totally awesome rebel gems and pink is totally his color. While Steven is okay not processing the completely insane risks he took, everyone else is clearly shaken by just how close they came to losing him for good. And while the adventure moved forward for Steven, everyone else was just left behind. That sort of waiting to find out if someone you love is alive or dead tears at your soul. Frankly, Steven making it home was mostly dumb luck. With equal parts bravery and gem abilities (some of which he had no idea he was capable of even using)- but mostly dumb luck. But hey, everyone’s some kind of alive, so that’s what counts, right? You don’t get it. No. Everything is definitely not okay. Connie and Steven have trained for this very moment. Stevonnie is the literal embodiment of their love for each other. We went through this with Connie in Sworn to the Sword. Pearl was training Connie to sacrifice herself for Steven if need be. To literally fight for him, not with him. Steven was very much not okay with this. Jam buds forever, because they’re stronger together. Steven stressed the idea that they would always be there for each other, and would never need to face any of this alone. No matter what came, they would always face it together. All of that emotion, and that was just practice. And then Homeworld came. The first time it was real, Steven was ready to sacrifice himself without a second thought. Now Steven actually goes off, totally out of his element, with a literal planet full of gems that think he’s the strange new form of the leader of the Earth rebellion, who at the very least think he had something to do with Pink Diamond’s shattering. No one is really all that interested in defending him (even blue Zircon just sort of… stumbled upon her defense), and aside from the off colors, no one is going to fight for him. Worse than that, as Connie put it, he just… gave up. He was far to eager to sacrifice himself. I’m not saying he has a martyr complex, but he’s a little too okay with the idea of dying for his cause. Steven’s death wouldn’t fix anything of course. He’d just be gone. And I sincerely hope someone will sit him down and have a heart to heart with him about this, because hearing him repetitively say how everything would fix itself if he just let the Diamonds do whatever they want with him is definitely worrisome. I don’t know if I’d say he’s actually suicidal, but his attitude towards it all is concerning. For Connie, of course it’s heart breaking. But what do you do? How do you deal with it? What do you even say? DO you say anything at all? Long story short: She feels betrayed and scared for Steven at the same time. Saying it’s a lot to work through is putting it lightly. Meanwhile, Steven is desperate to decompress about everything. So desperate that he can’t see what effect his actions had on Connie. All he sees is her being ungrateful for being “saved”, and throughly unimpressed with his heroic actions. He’s hurt, he’s confused. He goes through all of these wild events, and the first thing he wants to do is share it with his best friend- and now she’s mad too mad to speak to him? He finally gets that she feels betrayed for heading off by himself and giving himself in by the end of the episode, but Connie isn’t ready to forgive him yet. For someone who’s always so eager to please people and do the right thing, this cuts especially deep. It plays to his insecurities, and things are going to get worse before they get better. And on top of it all, Homeworld is still coming.
