This covers the history of DEX Garage the North's First multistorey car park, from its origins alongside the Odeon cinema, and the high class lifestyle this promoted. In turn to its brutalist addition on John Dobson Street, which added the single storey nightclub BUZ.
This car park is now due for demolition due to the site being redeveloped as part of a proposal by the Reuben Brothers, and the wider pilgrim street area.

Wonderful video Jordan, my Grandfather built the Garage in the 30s. Great to see it before demolition (as I live in Sydney), truly appreciate it! It has had a good innings from it's heyday, quite an inspiring idea to develop this type of modern facility in the heart of Newcastle back in those times.

I'm going to have to go and photograph this before demolition. It's a beautiful building. I used to park there sometimes for uni in the 90s.

Christopher Whapples Fantastic video and presentation, well done for leaving a record of this interesting building which has a real history. I used to look after it as a Structural Engineer so sad to so it go. However, it was worn out and beyond reasonable cost of repair. It is similar to Lex Garage in Brewer Street in London and also Talbot Street MSCP in Blackpool. Please keep going with recording the history of MSCPs as there are some really interesting examples across the country.

Thanks Christopher, glad you enjoyed it. MSCPs are really intresting and often overlooked in the design merits.

Your videos, are honestly fascinating, along with the lovely background music, a real pleasure to watch. I'm at least twice your age and lived in Newcastle all my life and its a building I've never even noticed, let alone park my car there, but now I know all about it, brilliant! "BuZZ" nightclub has had a few different names over the years and was a good nightclub, I used to go when it was called "Manhattans" small and full of atmosphere, great music! was even a breakdance revival venue in the early 90's. "Guru josh, infinity" reminds me of this place, killer tune! There was a gangland assassination attempt outside the nightclub in the early 90's which also made the place a bit more famous. Brilliant videos Jordan thanks very much 👍

Thanks! Make sure to give it a visit before it goes, real piece of North East history here. I am very jealous of you getting to experience this club when it was popular! Did the inside have any brutalist features? or was it completely covered away?
@MBrady1970
@MBrady1970 3 жыл бұрын
@@JordanReeve It was completely covered inside Jordan, glass finishes etc.. nightclub style. I'd read somewhere today its an empty shell in there now, not even floors apparently. I'll definitely visit dex before it gets demolished, i'm intrigued now :)

Petrol station on Barrack road by St James Park is in the city centre, one on Scotswood Road too, maybe a little bit outside. There also used to be one not too long ago at Manors where is now a Northumbria University on the site of the old New Bridge Street station. There used to be one on the left on Melbourne Street as you pass the old Tram Depot/Castlegate just off the A186 roundabout

"Buzz" nightclub used to be called "Tuxedo Junction" back in the 1980s. The dance floor in the centre of the club was surounded by 1 or 2 raised levels (each maybe 3 or 4 foot higher than each other) that had maybe 20 table at each level. Every table had its own telephone with the phone number corresponding to the table number on an internal telephone system - so you could call someone up at another table and chat them up. It was quite common for lads to take bets on who could stand up the most girls by calling them up and saying "meet me at the bar" but then leaving them stranded! Whilst it seemed fun at the time, 4 decades on I can't believe I was so cruel. Tuxedo Princess (aka "The Boat") was later opened on the Gateshead quayside by the same company and Tuxedo Junction was later renamed Manhattan's

Parked a few times in DEX. I have a secret fascination with these kinds of buildings. However we just need to accept when a building as much as we love them, are too far gone, is no longer fit for use and has surpassed its service life. Somethings need to go in order for the city to move into the future.

That’s the thing, cities do change and this building has probably surpassed its life

Also, the seemingly useless brick tower in the wasteland outside is the ventilation shaft for the Metro

Always wanted to walk in here, bottled it though cos I thought it was completely empty. I used to look at Buz as a kid and think it was terrifying, incredibly important building to my childhood. Tragedy to watch it disappearing as we speak.

I suppose "Dex" may be a pun on "decks", i.e. lots of decks to park on. I have to agree with Heritage, the building is just too far gone.

We could still save the front, it just been missing a little love & someone with a paint brush & mop. They are saving the examples of this in London. Greys Street was falling to peices until it was cleaned up.
