Some of the best music I ever heard and the most fun I had in a jazz club was going to the Village Vanguard to hear Dexter's group from 1978 into the early 80s. Dexter is such an incredibly important giant of the saxophone. What an amazing personal sound and incredible swing and passion. He will always be one of my idols in the jazz world.

Dexter you could hardly string two words together and the you spoke with passion and extreme clarity through your saxophone or as you called it your ‘axe’. You beautiful man!

What nonsence. Dexter could be very funny in good compagny. We often had a good laugh together.

@@olebirgerpedersen so pleased to hear you name drop! Since I did not have the please of drinking with the genius my comment was based on his later in life track intros. And for the record my comment was not meant to be taken literally, more to show contrast. Like Billie Holiday later in life hardly being able to speak, then singing like an angel!

I must admit I was a bit worried when Dexter came on stage, but he's cool here. It's fun to hear Dex on a roll 'one more once', and with young bassist David Eubanks.

ive never seen dexter gordon look like this loaded maybe too loaded

His total command of his instrument shows no impairment that intoxicants would cause. Dexter had an ungainly, uncoordinated gait and his own special way of communicating that gave the appearance of inebriation to the uneducated fan. He might have smoked some weed before the set, nothing more.

he can hardly speak, but can he play ! sharper than ever, each note exactly where it has to be -

He’s trying to communicate in a foreign tongue, his music communicates much more effectively.

By 1982 he quit drinking and doing drugs. But sadly, the damage Dexter did to his body was starting to rear its ugly head.

Quit trying to judge if or what substance he’s on, all that’s relevant is the music he’s making and the joy he’s giving the audience and us.
